Estimation and detection project

Dr. Omar A. Nasr

Nov, 2014
Groups: teams of 2 students can choose one project. However, the expected
output of two people working in a project is higher than one.
In order to practice some of the concepts taught in the class, and to extend
the knowledge of the students in the area of signal detection and parameter
estimation, each student is required to make a class project. The following steps
should be followed to complete the final report
1- Topic selection:
a. Select a subtopic in the following broad topics:
i. Spectrum sensing
ii. Compressive Sensing
iii. Distributed/cooperative sensing and parameter estimation
iv. Distributed detection
v. Weiner filtering
vi. Parameter estimation for communication systems
vii. Localization
viii. Any other interesting topic in the areas of detection and
estimation
b. Track the activity of one of the famous scientists in the area of signal
detection and parameter estimation.
2- Select a specific problem in your selected topic
3- Find few key papers that solve the problem you selected, or find few
successive papers by one famous professor that deals with a specific
problem. The total number of pages in the papers should be between 15-20
pages (2-4 papers).
4- Write a review paper to review the papers you selected. You should:
a. describe, in your language, the problem that you are trying to solve
b. describe the different alternatives to solve this problem
c. compare the different solutions
d. suggest an extension of the problem
e. suggest one of the following:
i. a modification for one the solutions
ii. a way to combine the different solutions in an optimal way
iii. a new solution for that problem. You may also find a solution for
the extension of the problem.
f. You should simulate the results in one of the key papers or simulate
your suggested solution
g. Any contribution that can lead to a research paper will get bonus points

Evaluation will be based on:

1- Selection of problem: the problem should be a real and interesting

problem.
2- Selection of the papers: the papers should be either journal papers or
conference papers published in important conferences.
3- Clarity of the writing: the language and the ideas should be very clear
4- Data representation : you should use plots, block diagrams, flow charts,
etc that facilitates understanding of your ideas
5- Quality of the comparison
6- The suggested extension
7- The suggested modification and solution.
8- Validity of simulation results
Grading:
25 points out of the 100 total points of the course will be based on the project.
- The final report must follow the IEEE conference papers formats found in:
http://www.ieee.org/publications_standards/publications/authors/authors_journals
.html
- Two progress reports will be submitted during the semester to show the
progress in your work
- Students will make a presentation about their work after the finals
Try to do a good job, we have published before 3 papers in good conferences
based the class project
