PART-A(Marks:32)

1. Design a compression member of two channels toe-to-toe. The length of the compression member is 10m and carries a load of 1500 kN. The width over the backs
of channels is 400mm. The channels are connected by battens.
(a) Sectional elevation of the column
(b) Cross section of the column.

2. A simply supported welded plate girder having a span of 14 m has to support


concentrated loads of 100 kN each from cross girder at 2 m intervals. In addition,
the girder has to carry a uniformly distributed load of 18 kN/m including its own
self weight. Design the cross-section of the plate girder and suitable sti eners. The
design should conform to I.S.:800-1984. Draw dimensioned sketches showing the
longitudinal elevation and cross-section of the girder.

3. (a) Explain about intermittent llet welds?
(b) A circular plate 125mm in diameter is welded to another plate along the
periphery by 6mm llet weld. Find the maximum twisting moment that can
be applied to the plate in plane, if the stress in the weld is not to exceed 110
N/mm2

4. (a) Discuss about e ective span and de ection limitations as per I.S. code?
(b) Design a simply supported beam to carry a uniformly distributed load of 44
kN/m. The e ective span of the beam is 8m. The e ective length of the
compression ange of the beam is also 8m. The ends of the beam are not free
to rotate at the bearings.

5. Design a slab base for a column section ISHB 350 carries an axial load of 1500 kN.
The permissible bearing pressure on concrete is 5 N/mm2. Safe bearing capacity
of soil is 200 kN/m2.

6. A tension member of truss, carrying a tensile force of 25 kN, meets the principal
rafter, carrying a compressive force of 100 kN, at right angles. The panel to length
along the principal rafter is 2.4 m. Design both the members, using IS:1161 grade
Yst 240 tubes. Also, design the welded joint for the members, taking the allowable
stress in llet weld as 110 N/mm2.

7. Design a riveted plate girder spanning 15 m and supporting two 500 kN concentrated loads at third points.

1. A column is sub jected to an axial load of 750 kN. The beam connected to the ange
of the column has an eccentric load of 150 kN and the beam connected to the web
of the column has an eccentric load of 60kN. Design the column for an e ective
length of 4 meters? Draw

2. Design a welded plate girder of 30 m span to the support a live load of 75 kN/m
uniformly distributed over the span. Adopt permissible stress as per I.S.:800-1984.
Draw the longitudinal elevation, cross-section and plane of the girder. [16]
PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)
3. (a) A tie bar 12010mm is to be connected to the other tie bar of size 120mm14mm.
If the tie bars are to be loaded by a pull of 160kN. Find out the size of end llets such that the stresses in the end llets are the same. Take the permissible
stresses in the weld =110N/mm2.

(b) The tension member of a truss consists of two angels of 50mm 80mm
8mm. If the two angles are welded on either side of the gussets plate at the
joint, design the joint. Axial tension in the member is 150 kN. Permissible
shear stress in the weld material is 110 N/mm2. Use 6mm llet welds. [8+8]

4. (a) With neat sketches explain compound beams?


(b) A simply supported beam is to support a uniformly distributed load of 70
kN/m exclusive of the self weight. Clear span is 8m. Design a plated rolled
steel beam ISMB 500 @ 0.869 kN/m and 10mm thick plates are only available.
The compression ange of the beam is laterally unrestrained [7+9]
5. A column section ISHB 300 @ 630 N/m with one cover plate 400 mm 20 mm on
either side is carrying an axial load of 2800 kN inclusive of self weight of base and
column. Design a gusseted base. The allowable bearing pressure in concrete is 4
N/mm2. The allowable bending stress in base plate is 185 N/mm2. [16]

6. Design an unequal angle section to act as a tie member 1.86 m long in a roof truss,
if it carries an axial load of 150 kN. Use power driven rivets at joint. [16]
7. Design a web splice for a plate girder for the following data :
Web plate : 2000 mm 12 mm
Flange angles : ISA 200 mm 100 mm 15 mm (ISA 200 100, @0.336 kN/m)
Net area of tension ange: 24642 mm2
Gross area of compression ange : 28556 mm2

Maximum bending moment at section : 6900kN-m


Corresponding shear force at section : 1380 kN
Flange plates in each ange : 2 500 mm 16 mm.
