Art Therapy with Children

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a psychological discipline, which
specializes in using the visual arts and the creative process to bring about therapeutic change.
Art Therapy is an excellent way to reach school
children that have problems in socializing,
learning, and mental ability.

Art Therapy with

Learning Disabilities
Children with learning difficulties often have
additional problems that causes distress and
concerns in their lives, some of their problems
are; anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, aggression, emotional and mental disturbance,
loss and change, and difficulties with relationships. Art therapy offers an alternative means
of self-expressions; it offers children to express
themselves about difficult life events, through
art therapy children can physically act out
strong emotions in a safe and appropriate way
using art materials. With art therapy children
are encouraged to make choices and by this
way children can be more self aware, and be
more able to make decisions about their lives.
Through making art, feelings and different aspects of the self are put onto the art medium,
these are then mirrored back to the person. In
this way art can help develop self image and a
sense of identity (Bull & Farrell, 2012)

Art Therapy with Autism

Art Therapy is a supplemental Therapy for Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Children.
Since the 1970s countless practitioners in Europe and in the US have contributed art therapy to the educational programs for autistic
children in special schools within the social service departments and in private practice.

Art Therapy with AD/HD

Art is a good medium for capturing intense experiences, the experience of an AD/HD child is
generally that there is a lot going on. Also art
to its advantage is taht it is an activity that uses
what are often stronger visual learning skills to
lend structure and give children to be contemplative, a way to express their feelings in therapy. The art product itself provides the patient
with a visual record of those feelings or ideas
that have come up.
Art Therapy is one valuable resource for team
of professionals working with the AD/HD child.
It provides a visual benchmark of the patients
at initial diagnosis and becomes a way of documenting the childs progress throughout ongoing treatment.
