WaterisacompoundmadefromthetwoelementsofHydrogenandOxygen.Ithasthe
chemicalsymbolH2OwhichindicatesthateachmoleculeisacombinationofoneOxygen
atomandtwoHydrogenatoms.
Allatomscanform'ions'.Thesearejustthesameatomexceptwithalittleextracharge.
Atomscanbecomeionizedwheninthepresenceanelectricfield.Youcanseeextreme
examplesofthisintheDIYTeslaCoilproject.Hydrogenformspositiveions,andoxygenformsnegativeions.Weusethistoour
advantagebyusinganelectricfieldtopullthewatermoleculesapart.
Byplacingtwoelectrodes(metalplates)intowaterwecancreateanelectricfieldbetweenthembyconnectingthemtotheterminals
ofabatteryorpowersupply.Thepositiveelectrodeisknownastheanode,whilethenegativeoneisthecathode.Purewateractually
doesnotconductelectricitysoitisnotsuitabletobeusedwithoutaddingsomethingtothewater.Tapwateralreadycontainsmany
dissolvedcompoundswhichallowthewatertoconduct.Theionsformedinthewaterwillbeattractedtotheelectrodeofopposite
polarity,i.e.thepositivehydrogenionswillmovetowardsthecathode,whilethenegativeoxygenionsmovetotheanode.Oncethe
ionsreachthesurfaceoftheelectrodesthechargeswillbeneutralisedbyaddingorremovingelectrons.Thegasisthenfeetobubble
upoutoftheremainingwatertobecollected.
Theelectrodesaretypicallymadefrommetalorgraphite(carbon)sothattheycanpasselectricityintothewater.Itis
importantthatthechosenmaterialdoesnotreactreadilywithoxygenoroneofthedissolvedcompoundsotherwise
reactionswilloccuratthesurfaceofthecathode(negativeelectrode)andthewaterwillbecomepollutedwiththe
productsofthereactions.Youwillseeanexampleofthisbelowwhencopperelectrodesareused.Thisalsomeansthat
noorverylittleoxygengasisreleasedasitgetscombinedwiththemetalelectrodeandremainsinthecontainer.

getgoodgasproductionrateswithoutusingextrachemicalsorerodingtheelectrodes.

Thefirstelectrodestriedwereonesleftoverfromadifferentproject.TheyweremadefromCoppercoated
Carbonrodswhicharenotidealduetocopperbeingabletoreactwiththewater.Theideawasthatthecopper
wouldeventuallyallreactawayandtherewouldbejustCarbonleftwhichwouldnotpollutethewater.

Manypeopleuseelectrodesmadefromstainlesssteelkitchenwareorswitchplatesbecausethestainlesssteeldoesnotreactas
easily.Theproblemisthatthegradeofthesteeloftenfoundinsuchitemsisnotgreatandyouwillbeleftwithabrownsludgeafter
afewminuetsofoperation.Theyarealsoquitethin,usuallylessthan1mm,whichmeansthatthedonotlastaverylongtime
beforebeingtotallyerodedaway.Theerosionoftheelectrodeshappensmuchmorequicklywhenhighcurrentsorsolutes(often

Thevolumeofgasproducedisproportionaltothechargepassingthroughthewater(current)andthereforehighcurrentmeans
moregas.Todothisthespacingoftheelectrodesmustbeascloseaspossiblewhilestillhavingenoughroomforthegastobubble
outfreely.
Themetalchosenfortheplateswasspecialhighgradestainlesssteeltoreducecorrosion.Suchmetalisnotasconductiveasothers
likecopperforinstance,sotheseplatesweremadefromthicksheetsof2mmtocounterthispotentiallimitingfactor.Veryhigh
qualitymetalwasusedwhichmeantitwastoohardtocutwithcommonDIYtoolssotheseplateswerecutusingahighpressure
waterjet.

Theplatesarelayeredontopofeachotherwithnylonwashersbetweenusedasspacing.Theyareplacedinalternatingpositionssothattheplateswouldbe++
+.Stainlesssteelfixingswerethenusedtofititalltogether.Itisimportantthatitisputtogetherwellotherwisesparkscouldoccurinthegasproductionarea
resultinginanexplosion.
Atotalof16plateswereusedinwith1mmspacingbetweeneachofthem.Thelargecombinedsurfaceareaand
thicknessoftheplatesandboltsmeantthatthiscouldcarryverylargecurrentswithoutsignificantresistive
heatinginthemetal.Thetotalcapacitanceoftheelectrodeswas1nFwhenmeasuredinairwhichindicatesalarge
closesurfaceareaforgasproduction.Thissetofelectrodeswoulddrawabout25Afromordinarytapwater.To
collectthegas,theelectrodesneedtobeplacedinsomesortofcontainer.Thecontainerusedwasjustsomething
fromasupermarketandwasoriginallyintendedforstoringsomethingliketea!

Thisvideoshowstheresultofapplying12Vtotheelectrodeswhensubmergedinordinarytapwater.No'catalysts'
havebeenaddedtothewateratall,thisisjusttapwater!

Itisdrawingabout25A.Powertothecelliscontrolledusingapulsewidthmodulationcircuit.
Thecontainerwasmadefrommetalsoitwas
importanttoplacetheelectrodesonaplastic
basetopreventanyshortcircuits.Thisimage
showshowtwobananasocketswereinstalled
eithersideofsomecopperandbrassfittings
usedtoextractthegas.Thepowerandpipe
fittingswerescrewedtightlyandsealedwith
siliconsealantsothattheclosedcontainer
wouldbeairtight.
Thegasproducedisahighlyexplosivemixture
ofHydrogenandOxygenandshouldbetreated
withextremecaution.Alargevolumeofgas
existsinsidethecontainerwhichifignitedwould
explodeanddestroythecontainer.Toavoid
detonatingthegas,thepipefromthecontainer
isfedintothebaseofanothercontainerwhichis
halffilledwithwater.Thisallowsthegasto
bubbletroughthewatertothenbecollectedvia
anotherpipewhichisusedasthegasoutput.Nowifanyignitionoccursattheoutput,theflamescan'tgetback
pastthebubblerdeviceandintothelargegasvolumeintheelectrolysiscell.Thisisanabsolutelyessentialsafety
deviceandshouldnotbeskipped.

AsimilarprojectwhichusestheexplosivepropertiesofthegasistheHydrogenCannonexperiment.

YoushouldbeawarethatdetonatingthisHHOgasmixtureisVERYVERYloud.

intheenginecylinderbyaddingthisgas.Thestandardinternalcombustionengineishighlyinefficientintermsoftheconversionofchemicalenergyinfuelto
kineticenergyintheenginesothereisplentyofroomforpotentiallyimprovingthis.
Dontforgetthattosplitthewateryouareusingelectricitygeneratedbythecaraltinatorwhichthereforeaddsmoreresistancetotheengine.Youmustalsobe
carefulnottopulltoomuchcurrentasitwillburnoutyouraltinator.
Withmodernenginestheenginemanagementsystemislikelytointerferewithwhatyouaretryingtodoasitchangesthefuelairmixbasedonsensorreadings

IhavenevertesteditmyselfsoIcannotsayifdoingthiswillactuallyimproveefficiencyornot.WesellarangeofqualityPWMControlCircuitsthatcouldbeused
