CHECK LIST FOR PREPARATION OF

VALVE AND SPECIALITY LIST

1 OF 3

SCOPE
This document describes points to be checked during preparation of Valve and Speciality
List. The required reference documents are :
(a)

P&I Ds

(b)

Legend showing the configurations of various types of valves and specialities

(c)

An established tagging procedure (client's/collaborator's/ TCE procedure TCE.M6-ME-590-435)

(d)

Instrument Erection sketches

2.0

CHECK LIST

2.1

Check if each valve or speciality is identified by a tag number.

2.2

Check for inclusion of the following :

(a)

The tag number in conformity to the tagging procedure for the job,

(b)

The type of valve or speciality,

(c)

The size,

(d)

The quantity and

(e)

The location of the valve, i.e., indicate the line designation number or the
equipment number on which the valve is located.
In the case of valves for
instrumentation isolation, identify the detail along with line number (for example,
"isolation of PI 300 on line no. 1047").

SHEET

2 OF 3

In the case of power plant jobs, check and fill the following :
(a)

End connection details,

(b)

Type of bonnet,

(c)

Requirement of IBR (for Indian projects) and

(d)

Type of operator.

2.4

In the case of chemical and industrial jobs, if the tag number does not identify the type of
valve or speciality and the requirement of IBR, check for inclusion of the same.

2.5

Check if 'holds' in P&I Ds are transferred to the valve and speciality list.

2.6

Ensure that isolation valves for instrumentation connections are included. Sometimes
these isolation valves are not shown in the P&I Ds.

2.7

Check that the correct valves are specified for instrumentation items on equipment. This
may not be clear when lines of different specifications are connected to the equipment.

2.8

Check if the following special features are included as required.

(a)

Locked open or closed requirement (indicate whether open or closed),

(b)

Electric motor operators,

(c)

Chain operators,

(d)

Extended stem and

(e)

Vacuum condition.

2.9

It may be noted that it may not be possible to establish the requirement of chain operators
or extended stem in the first instance. The need for these features becomes established
only during piping layout generation.

2.10

Check if estimated quantity of valves and specialities not shown in the P&I Ds is included.
These may be required for vents and drains, steam trap assemblies for low points in steam
lines, steam tracers, jacketed pipes etc. Check with process engineer in case of doubt.

Check if requirement of traps and valves for drains are added at the following locations :
(a)

Upstream of steam control and pressure reducing valve,

(b)

At dead ends in steam lines and

(c)

Upstream of isolating valves in steam lines.

The above may not be shown in P&I Ds.

2.12

Specification number, manufacturer and valve drawing number may be added when the
information becomes available.

3.0

GENERAL

3.1

Check if there is any special format for the valve and speciality list given by the client or
collaborator in which case the same shall be followed.

3.2

In the absence of any format from the client or collaborator, TCE format (Form No. 075)
shall be followed.

3.3

Check if the P&I D revision status is added.

3.4

Check if all the assumptions made during preparation of valve and speciality list are listed.

3.5

Check if document number is given as per the job drawing schedule.
