Academic Programs
APEX - Walter Johnson’s Signature Program is in its twelfth year. The
APEX Scholars Program (Advanced Placement Experience) is designed
to be a highly competitive four-year course of study. It offers a select
group of students a comprehensive curriculum combining accelerated
honors and intensive advanced placement level coursework. The course
of study provides highly gifted learners with a broad, general
background in many academic areas at appropriately challenging
levels, to help them better prepare to choose future fields of interest or
career paths.

THE HONORS PROGRAM - Through the Honors Program, academically


challenging courses are available to all qualified students. Honors work
may be taken in grades 9-12 in English, social studies, mathematics,
music, science, foreign languages, and computer science. All work in
advanced placement courses, designated honors courses, and honors
courses is considered to be honors work. Honors level coursework is
offered in:

 English, all required courses


 Modern World History, Government, US History
 Geometry, Algebra 2 with Analysis, Pre Calculus with Analysis,
Calculus with Applications
 Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Health,
Nutrition Science, Optics, Physics, Quantum Physics
 French, Spanish, Chinese, Latin (level 3 and above)
 Computer Science
 Chorus, Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band &
Orchestra, Wind Ensemble

OUR SCHOOL AND VISION


We are a comprehensive public high school on a semester grading
system, grades 9-12, accredited by the Middle States Association and
the Maryland State Department of Education.

The Walter Johnson High School community strives to be a caring, safe


environment that fosters personal growth and academic achievement.

MISSION
Through fostering healthy and productive relationships, the Walter
Johnson community will promote, as appropriate, academic rigor,
social, and emotional growth.

The Community:
Our Montgomery County community encompasses Garrett Park,
northern Bethesda, southern Kensington, and southern Rockville. We
are located in the heart of a high-tech center, surrounded by such
major research and development employers as: IBM, The National
Institutes of Health and the Bethesda Naval Hospital. Our parents,
mainly professional and managerial employees, are actively involved in
supporting our school. We believe that our vision and our community
have created an atmosphere of excellence at Walter Johnson High
School.

Certificate of Merit
The Certificate of Merit recognizes the extra effort made by students
who choose more rigorous courses in all programs, not only in
academic areas. It is awarded to students who satisfy these additional
requirements:

 Obtain a 3.0 unweighted grade point average


 Earn at least 12 credits in advanced courses, which are available
in most subject areas, and indicated by CM, HON on the transcript.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS
ESOL - The English for Speakers of Other Languages department
provides programs for students whose primary language is not English
and who need academic support. In September, 2007, 109 ESOL
students come from 40 countries and speak 26 different languages.

Academic Support Center - This program provides support to


approximately 300 students with identified learning styles that may
require specialized instruction and accommodations to meet academic
demands.

Internships - Our corporate and government neighbors offer us


invaluable opportunities for academically rigorous business
partnerships and internships in the physical and social sciences.

Internships also include a daily in-school program for selected, high


achieving students who provide academic support to students in the
classroom setting.

Our graduates must also complete a minimum of 60 hours of student


service. Students who earn 260 hours or more are awarded a
Certificate of Outstanding Service.

In addition to completing specific graduation requirements and student


service learning hours, students must take High School Assessment
(HSA) exams in US History and Biology and must also take the
Maryland School Assessments for Algebra and for Grade 10 English.
