1. Three point charges are arranged along the x-axis. Charge q1 = -4.50 nC is located at x
= 0.200 m, and charge q2 = +2.50 nC is at x = -0.300 m. A positive point charge q3 is
located at the origin.
a) What is the direction of the total force due to q1 and q2 on q3?
In the +x-direction
b) What must be the value of q3 for the total force on this point charge to have magnitude
4.0010-6 N?
Both q1 and q2 are pushing q3 in the same direction. Therefore, the magnitude of the total
force is given by

c) What is the magnitude and direction of the electric field due to q1 and q2 at the origin?

The field points in the +x-direction

d) Where along the x-axis can q3 be placed so that the total force (and electric field) on it
is zero? (Other than )
The charge q3 must be placed a distance d to the left of q2. The magnitudes of the forces
due to q1 and q1 will be equal at this point.

2. Figure 1 shows an electric dipole in a uniform electric field with magnitude 5.0105
N/C directed parallel to the plane of the figure. The charges are 1.610-19 C; both lie in
the plane and are separated by 0.125 nm.

a) Find the total force exerted by the field on the dipole.

The total force is zero.

b) Find the magnitude and direction of the electric dipole moment.

It is directed at an angle of 145 below the horizontal.

c) What is the magnitude and direction of the torque in the position shown in figure 1?

It is directed out of the page.

d) Calculate the potential energy of the system in the position shown in figure 1.

3. The potential V at a distance of 25.0 cm from a very small charged sphere is 48.0 V,
with V taken to be zero at an infinite distance from the sphere.
(a) If a positive charge was placed a point 25.0 cm away from the sphere, will it move
toward or away from the sphere? Explain your answer.
It will move away since positive charges move from high potential to low potential.

(b) If the sphere is treated as a point charge, what is its charge?

(c) What is the potential at a distance 75.0 cm from the sphere?

4. A particle with charge +7.60 nC is in a uniform electric field directed to the left.
Another force in addition to the electric force acts on the particle so that when it is
released from rest it moves to the right. After it as moved 8.00 cm, the additional force
has done 6.5010-5 J of work and the particle has 4.3510-5 J of kinetic energy.
(a) What work was done by the electrical force on the particle?
Using the CWE theorem, we have

Solving for the work done by the electric force, we get

(b) What is the electrical potential of the starting point with respect to the end point (i.e.
set the potential at the end point to zero)?
Since the electrical force is a conservative force,

Solving for the potential difference, we get

Setting Vf = 0 and solving for Vi,

(c) What is the magnitude of the electric field?

We find for a constant electric field that
