BRIEFING ON ENERGY IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT MICROGRIDS

Presentation to:
US Congressional Staff
May 10, 2010

Pareto Energys Definition of Microgrid

A Peer-to-Peer energy network that distributes electricity in a
small geographic area and also often distributes heating and
cooling services that,
Usually supplements, stays connected and continues to rely on
the central power grid but also accesses,
Generating units located at or near their point of use that rely
on locally available fuels, especially locally available renewable
energy resources.
Some drivers of the interest in microgrids are reliability (fewer
wires), environmental sustainability, security (no single point of
failure) and local economic development and jobs.
Note: there are nearly no working microgrids of any significant
size in the United States, due mostly to the safety concerns
about connecting them with the utility grid.
