CONCRETE BLOCKS FOR CONSTRUCTION

Rugged Strength, Durable and minimum drying shrinkage :G+k

Concrete Blocks are made in a
fully automated High Tech plant by a processwhichinvolves : Compaction by high pressure and vibration.
The blocks are steam cured. Because of law water cement ratio, perfect grading and special curing
process the shrinkage is minimum and compressive strength is 60 kg/cm2and above, which is 100%
strong than bricks hence more durable.
Cost wise economical than conventional brick work : Block masonry is ecomomical than brick
masonrys. More over 140 mm thick block masonry is equivalent to 230 mm thick brick work and one can
use 140 mm thick block masonry instead of 230 mm thick brick masonry in framed structures.
Lighter Foundations :As a m2of 140 mm thick block work @ a density of 1400kg/m3weighs 196 kg/m2
while a 230 mm thick brick work @ a density of 1920 kg/m3weigh 441 kg/m2 i.e. the dead weight is
reduced by 56%. This does an overall cost saving of 12% to 15% in concrete & steel in multistoreyed
buildings.
Saving in Shuttering : Shuttering in RCC parapets and Pardis can be totally avoided by going for
reinforced block partition masonry with cross stiffening by bond beams. One sq.ft. of 3 inch RCC pardi
has a concrete of Rs. 81- while 2 sq.ft. of shuttering which cost of Rs. 201- can be totally saved. RCC
column in compound wall can be eliminated using Hollow Blocks thus saving shuttering cost.
Saving in Plaster : One can avoid plaster for internal walls or minimise the thickness as the masonry's
surface is perfectly plumb. Plaster cost is nearly 35% of the wall cost.
Saving in Energy : Becuase of the insulating properties one can save upto 40% in Air Conditioning
cooling and heating costs.
Saving in mortar : Cement consumed in block masonry is nearly 4 to 6 times lesser than in brick
masonry.
Lower maintenance cost : Being made of superior and inherently durable material block masonry
requires lesser maintenance cost compared to brick masonry (there is no leakage or seepage).
Speed :Constructionspeed of block masonry is two times as comparedwith brick masonry.
Excellent thermal & Accoustic properties
Blocks on account of the hollow acts as insulant
and keeps building warm in winter and cool in summer. Moreover concrete blocks absorbs 10% of the
sound waves hence it is a better accoustic materialthan the bricks.
Concealed Fittings :Without any sort of chasing or any sort of pre-,planning concealed electrical wiring
and plumbing is easily possible with & h d k block masonry. Contact us for further details.
Increase in Carpet Area : About 10% increase in carpet area is achieved by using 140 mm thick block
work instead of 230 mm thick brick wall.
No Effloresence :Effloresence or Salt peter action is practicallyeliminated.
Convenient Sizes :G+k
blocks are avilable in over 30 convenient sizes and shapes. On account of
excellentstrength and wide range there is practically no wastage at site.
Good Resistance to Fire :Alongwith good load carrying capacity, @+vd blocks provide maximum fire
resistance. However steel needs protection from fire concrete masonry offers this protection to a great
extent. Besides, building constructed with concrete blocks attract lower insurance premium rate.
Confirmsto IndianStandard :G-k

blocks confirms to IS 2185 (Part I) Grade B (5.0)

Excellent for covering under ground cables : Telephone and electric transmission lines can be
covered by using blocksthus makingthem safer and easier to maintain.

How to use Concrete Blocks ?

Please follow the following suggestions :
Dry Units Essential :Concrete masonry blocks should never
be pre-wetted as is customary with bricks as concrete block
will give drying shrinkage while the joint montan is setting,
resulting in cracking of the joint mortar. However, water may
be sprayed on thejoints for curing from the next day.
Mark the courses on the columns :Before starting the block
work mark the courses on columns and try to adjust the first
course in a way as to avoid any gape at the beam bottom. This
can be best achieved by marking courses with a stick which
has20 cm markson it as shown in fig. 1.
Arrange the blocks in the First Course :After levelling the
surface as above start by arranging the blocks between two
columns so as to arrange the vertical gaps equally or use a
halforone fourth block as shown in fig. 2.
Use Cement lime mortar I:1:6 (1 cement :1 lime :6 sand)
:After having adjusted the first course start spreading mortar
by lifting one by one block form the first course. Lime adds
plasticity and makes joint water tight. Instead of lime one can
use Air Entraining Agentorbothforbestwatertightjoints.
Prepare mortar Strictly that can be consumed in an hour. Keep
the gauging water at the minimum.
Face shell bedding in enough : (see fig 3a) : The mortar
need be applied only on the face shell as shown in the figure
and not on the full shell as even with face shell bedding the
factor of safety is4.2 which far exceeds afactor of safety of 2.8
achieved in brick masonry with full mortar bedding. This also
will break the continuity of passage of rain water to the inner
face ofthe blockthrough thejoints.
Avoid wastage of mortar and make 1 cm thick joint : By
making a "Manson's Float" of the width equal to the width of
the cores with a 25 mm thick plank (fig 4.) one can achieve the
final thickness of joint as 1 cm and avoid falling of mortar into
the cores.
Tool the joints to make them watertight :The mortar in the
joint has been compacted vertically by the weight of the block
(fig .5) by tooling with 16 mm rod one can compact from the
side (fig.6) and make a concave groove making the jointwater
tight.

9. Provide a hexagonal wire mesh or a single leg 3 mm
stirrups at inter section of walls : Provide wire mesh or
stirrups at every 3rd layer of inter seeting walls and preferably
fill those twocorewith concreteas shown in fig. 8.
10. Fixing of doors & windows :This is possible by using special
lintel blocks as shown in fig. 7. for receiving the hold fasts and
then concreting the end cores after placing a 6 mm bar.
11. Protection from Rain : It is recommanded to do external
plaster preferably with a intergral water proofing compound or
apply a coat of Silicone based transparent water repellant
coat or both for protection from rain water. It is recommanded
to use inverted lintel blocks in the closing course at the beam
bottom.

ADVANTAGES OF PAVEMENTS WITH PAVERS

(1) Easy and speedy Installation : Large areas can be completed in very short time.
(2) No curing, No waiting : As paver fixing requires no mortar or cementing material
The pavement can be opened to traffic immediately after installation.
(3) Easy maintenance : Pavers can be extracted from the damaged area's & refitted
again with minimum breakage, labour and in minimum time & cost. There is no
patch work & potholes, cracks as in case of RCC & Bitumen paving.

(4) Underground repairs & maintenance easy : Laying of Pipeline IConduit ICables
/ Trenches etc. is easy as pavers can be removed & refitted in minimum cost &
time.
(5) Excellent Drainage : Pavement made by pavers have crevice which put the water
back into the ground. The sand bed underneath provides excellent drainage &
eliminates water logging therefore water does not accumulate on interlocking paver
pavements.
(6) Stops fire I Spills from spreading : The crevices in the pavement curtails fires
and spills to where ever they start due to spillage getting soaked into the crevices
and high fire rating of concrete interlocking blocks.

(7) Reusability : Pavers can be reused imparting in flexibility for planning and replanning. Large areas can be shifted at a later date it required with very little
breakage.
(8) High strength and durability : Pavers have a Compressive strength of 250
Kgs1Sq.Cm and above therefore they are extremely durable and long lasting.
(9) Load transfer : Pavers have a unique ability to transfer verticle loads from unit to
unit. Sand joints between the pavers transfer loads through shear, thereby
spreading loads over a large area and reducing stress to the sub-base. Transfer of
loads through joints enables pavement to act as a flexible interlocking systems,
rather than a loose collection of units and thus a suitable replacement of reinforced
concrete or asphalt.

(10) Excellent aesthetics : Pavers are available in different colours, thus different areas
can be highlighted like parking ways, traffic lanes etc. which add to the overall
aesthetics of your environment.
(11) Excellent skid resistance : The slight rough texture (semi smooth) and tapered
edges of the pavers gives good skid resisting properties to the pavement, making it
safe even during monsoons for drive wayslpath ways and other traffic areas.

SPECIAL NOTE : Recent research on "Structural Response of InterlockingConcrete interlock block pavements(ICBP), carried out by Central ResearchInstitute, Delhi, has concludedas
follows :
RCC/BITUMINEOUS PAVEMENT :These pavement of various places like bus stop, bus terminals, Highway Crossing are tend to wearing away their'surfaces severaly
owing to vehicular traffic. Besides pavement at the areas of Godowns, Large size enclosures, Freight CollectionCentres, Ports and Industrial Estates have to withstand

PAVER INSTALLATION
Installationof pavingstones is very simple and gives lasting area that can be removed and relaid at a later date if repair is necessary or
to accommodateservice lineswithout usual uglyscars is now common with concrete or asphalt monolithicsurfacing.

Preparing your base

Agood base is the essential requirementfor a durablejob. Special
care should be taken in preparingthe base to assure a permanent
installation. The depth of the base will be determined by the load
factor and the condition of the soil. The following information
should help you in makingthe right choice.

Completing the Job

The pavers should then be tamped down and levelledwith a
vibrating plate compactor. This will bring them to their true
grade as well as level the stones. Sand will be forced into
spacesto makestonesfirm andfree of movement. Finishthe
job by sweeping dry fine sand into the joints. Now, call your
friends andcelebrate.

Determine Depth of Base

For a Patlo, or sidewalk around the home, a 4" to 6" (10 to 15cm)
depth is usually sufficient. This should be a sharp concrete sand,
stone dust or limestonescreeing.
For driveways a 6" to 10" (15 to 26cm) gravel base should be well
compacted in layers of approximately 8" (20 cm) with a vibrating
type compactor. This should consist of a good Grade 'A' road
gravel with particles upto314" (2 cm). This should then becovered
with 1" to 2" (2.5 cm to 5 cm) of sharp sand, stone dust or
limestone screenings and screeded level but not compacted
Remember there is no definite rule of depth, but the above
suggestions will help as a guide or consult to

O w .

Levelling the Base

Installing Blended Colours

This is an important step in your installation to achieve a good

level job when finished. You must make sure the base is levelled
properly. Generally the most popular method of levelling is with a
skreedwhich isusually a long2"x6" board. It isvery importantthat
the board is straight, not warped or twisted. Although for larger
commercial Jobs skreeding bars or pipes may be used. A frame is
required to maintain the base.~hiscouldbe.@&&
Blocks for
added strength and beauty or simply the sGro{nding sol1 or a
wooden frame. The levelling of this frame will indicate the level of
your area.

Placing

q-

To produce pleasing blend select from 3 bundles

simultaneously working vertically down the rows. These
stonesshould be mixedagain when laying.

Paving Stones

Stones should be placed in the desired pattern close together.

The spaces between stones should not exceed 118" (3 mm) The
spacing should be consistant. This will help maintain a uniform
pattern. When laying each row the installer should stand on the
previously laid stones cutting of stones where necessary can be
donewith asplitterchisel or masonrysawas required.
