OBJECTIVES:

To familiarize the students on the different basic process and equipment

related to Rig 38-100.
To learn the proper calibration of the rig (Manual/computerized).
To determine the relationship of different elements as seen on the rig.
To determine the importance and application of Basic Process Rig in relation
to Instrumentation and Control Systems

Theoretical Background:

A process control is a very important practice and widely use in industries

such as in factories, plants, and the like. It can deal with different phases such as
solid liquid or gas. A 'process' is anything that can be compare from filling a

bucket of water from a tap, to monitoring the performance of a car and

determining the operating parameters (fuel injected, fuel mix, braking,
temperature, oil, etc.) which would produce an optimum performance.
Process control contributes a big role in optimization and maximization
of the work done by a system. It deals with the flow rate of a substance. The
concept is very simple. It is similar to filling a pale of water. As the water
reaches the top of the pale it indicates that the filling process must be
stopped. Analyzing this simple logic, the process control can be used for the
benefits of industry in controlling the work of the system by observing how
does it behaves, how to control it, which process most benefits the system
and many more.

As a result, even different field of engineering deals with this concept.

They might be differing in the substance to be controlled but their objective
is the same.

EQUIPMENTS AND MATERIALS USED:

Feedback Basic Process Rig 30-100 (not included in the

borrowers slip)

Feedback Process Interface 38-200

Feedback Digital Display Module 38-490

A set of connecting wires and power cord

Procedures:
Part I. Familiarization
1. Open SCADA edibon v2.12. START the software.
2. Toggle the AB2 button to ON state. Observe what happens to the system. What is the
function of AB2?__________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
3. Turn AB2 OFF and AA1 ON. What is the function of AA1?
___________________________________________________________________
4. Turn AA1 OFF and AVS2 ON. Do the same for AVS3. What is the function of the
two
recently
turned
on
buttons?

_________________________________________________________________
5. There are measurements on the tank which is height in millimeters. There are also flow
meters on the sides that measure the flow rate of running water. Drin the upper tank to a
height of 70mm.
6. Toggle AR1 to ON state. Did it turn on? Why or why not?

7. What
is
the
function
of
AR1?

8. By using the right pump water will travel from the lower to the upper tank. Without using
AB2, what combination of buttons would you turn on so that water would go to the
upper
tank
using
the
left
pump?

__________________________________________________________________
9. On what conditions can the actuator be adjusted? What is its function?

10. On the upper right corner the sensors table can be seen. Enumerate the indicators, the
sensor they represent, and the associated unit of measurement for each sensor.

________________________________________________________________________
11. Fill the upper tank with water up to 200mm. Turn AR1 ON to heat up the water in the
upper tank. Observe the temperature reading in the sensors table. What is the maximum
temperature observed?_____________________________________________________
12. Notice the metal tube near the tube drains. Fill the upper tank with water using the left
and right pumps. Adjust actuator to maximum level. Do not turn off the pumps. How
does
the
metal
tube
function?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
13. Turn OFF all open switches. There are valves near the tube drains. How do these valves
function?

Part II. Water Level/ Flow Control

1. Open SCADA edibon v2.12. START the software.
2. Open AVS2 and AVS3. Is the height of water in the left tank equal to that in the
right? Justify your answer.

3. Turn off all valves and switches. Let the water flow to the upper tank using the left
pump.

ANSWER SHEET:
Part I
2. It is the pump of the right tank.
3. It makes the stirrer active.
4. AVS2 and AVS3 are solenoid valves that are responsible for the drain of the upper tank.
The narrower tube is activated upon turning ON the former button whereas the latter is for
the wider tube.
6. No. Because the height of the water is not enough to lock the floating lever and turn on the
heater.
7. When turned ON, t activates the heater, which happens only after the water reaches a
certain level.
8. AB1 and AVS1 should be turned on.
9. When AB1 and AVS1 are turned ON. The actuator can be adjusted to control the flow
of water going up the tank.
SN1 Level Sensor millimeters
SC1 Flow Meter Sensor liters per minute (L/min)
ST1 Temperature Sensor degree Celsius
SP1 Pressure Sensor mmH2O
12. Maximum temperature is 27.5 C
13. The valves can be used for manual drain. Even without using the software, the tube
drains can be activated by manually operating the valves.

Pat II.
2. Eventually yes, but not right after the water has been drained to the lower tank. Height on
both levels eventually settles and become of equal height due to a hole on the lower part of
the division of the tank.
4. 0 to 20 pressure and height decreases; 20 to 40 constant; 40 to 100 increases
5. Pressure and height increases from actuator level greater than 40, constant at 40, and
decreases at levels less than 20.
Page | 6

6. At actuator level 40.

7. Pressure is directly proportional to height.
8. Decreasing on all levels (both pressure and height).
9. The pressure and height kept on decreasing.
10. No level on the actuator will increase height and pressure of water in the upper tank.
