We can see some boys, some girls, some birds, a monkey, a road, a pond, a tree
and a car.
They are the names of people, animals, places and things. What do we call
these words?
We call them nouns.

PROPER NOUNS.
These pictures show a boy, a parrot, a place and a mountain. There are special
names given to them.
What are these names?
They are 'Poh Wah', 'Polly', 'Hong Kong' and 'Mount Fuji'. Notice that all
these words begin with a capital letter. Such words are called Proper
Nouns.
REMEMBER
A Proper Noun is the special name given to a person, place, thing or an animal.
A Proper Noun adalah nama yang diberikan kepada seseorang, tempat, benda atau
binatang.

POSSESSIVE NOUNS

The nouns boy and squirrel are singular.


The pictures show that something belongs to each of these two nouns.
What is added to boy to show that the ball belongs to him?
An apostrophe s ('s) is added.
What is added to squirrel to show that the tail belongs to it?
An apostrophe s ('s) is also added.
The words boy's and squirrel 's are called Possessive Nouns.
When the noun is singular, we show possession by adding an apostrophes ('s).

Boys' is the possessive form of the plural noun boys and birds' is the
possessive form of birds.
What letter do boys and birds end in?
They end in s.
An apostrophe (') is added to these nouns to show possession.
When a plural noun ends in s, we show possession by adding an apostrophe (').

Men's is the possessive form of the plural noun men; children's is the
possessive form of children.
Do the nouns men and children end in s?
No, they don't.
We add an apostrophe s ('s) to such nouns to show possession.
When a plural noun does not end in s, we show possession by adding an
apostrophe s ('s).

Pail and car are non-living things.


What words do we use with them to show possession?
We use the words 'of the'.
When the noun is a non-living thing, we show possession by using 'of the'.

POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS
Look at the words mine and hers.
What are they used in place of?
They are used in place of nouns.
Mine means 'my book'.
Hers means 'her pencil'.
Other examples of such words are yours, ours, his and theirs.
These words are pronouns.

We call them Possessive Pronouns.

AGREEMENT
Read the pairs of sentences on the blackboard.
Nouns and pronouns such as 'girl', 'teachers' and 'they' are called the
subjects of the sentences.
The subjects of the sentences on the left are singular.
Are the verbs singular or plural?
They are singular.

They are plural.
These words take plural verbs.
The verb agrees with its subject in number. A singular verb goes with a singular
subject. A plural verb goes with a plural subject.
