TheE70furtherincorporatesmanycomfortoptionssuchasaglasspanoramaroof,and,forthefirsttime
inaBMW,anoptionalthirdrowseatwhichhasincreasedtheseatingcapacityinE70to7passengers,
addressingcriticismoftheE53modelwhichhadbeenregardedasbeingslightlytoosmallforthis
marketsegment.
TheE70isalsothefirstproductionvehicletouseFlexRay,anewextremelyfastelectricalbussystemit
isonlyusedforthecontrolofthechassisdampingsystem.Thenew'joystick'styleelectronicspace
savingshifterhassincebeenadoptedinthenew2008BMW5Series.

newlydevelopedMServotronicpowersteering,theperformanceSportActivityVehiclepromisesvery
competenthandling.Otherhightechfeaturesincludelaunchcontrolformaximumaccelerationanda
sixspeedMSportautomatictransmissionoptimizedforperformance.Driverscanmanuallyselectgears
usingeitherpaddlesoranelectronicgearselectorlever.Electronicallycontrolled,variablepower
distributiontothefrontandrearaxlepreventsthetendencytooversteerorundersteer,beforeDSC
DynamicStabilityControlisrequiredtocutin.
TheBMWX5MfeaturesthebiggestbrakesonaBMWproductionvehicle,with15.55"(395x36mm)
rotorsupfrontclampedbyfourpistoncalipers,and15.2"(385x24mm)rotorsattherearwithsingle
pistoncalipers.Althoughtractioncontrolisstandard,theMDynamicMode(MDM)reducestheeffect
