Executive Summary

The right to live is one of the most essential rights in human society, as a civilized society should
have right to live. Human have it when they born and come to the world and until the end of their
life. Their life are given from God and there are no exception of who can live and who cannot.
Every human are created equally. There are not any differences between them. And because of
it, humans do not have any right to murder others, as a penalty for things that they did or for
another purpose. The cause of murder, comes from several actions, such as rape, bullying and
cyberbullying, sexism, heterosexism, racism, terrorism, abortion and other things. This kind of
actions, still easily found and its not only one or two events of it. There are many human that
become the victim of these actions and it violate the rules of human rights.

Background

The right to live movement is based on the globalized human rights describing that every human
has the right to live, and none shall deprive others of their lives. This means that people must
not kill others or perform actions that the direct consequence would result in the loss of life of
others. This includes suicidal or murderous acts that are encouraged by the environment such
as bullying. Bullying will affect someone who become the victim, it will affect their mindset and

make them have a depression. In the end, the victim will have a suicide. Indirectly the one who
do the bullying, murder the victim.
There are many ways for a person to lose both of their right to live and their own life itself. The
basis of these acts are also varying between each victim and culprit.

Terminologies

A.

Murder

A murder is an act of depriving someone elses life very directly. Murders are considered a crime
and almost always penalized by imprisonment. Some countries do punish certain murderers
through death sentence upon judgment. The reasons for the murder rarely justifies the culprits
act, such as self-defense purposes.
The most direct way of depriving people of their lives is by murdering them. Any form of
techniques, tricks, weapons and partners may be used in order to perform a murder. The
reasons for murder varies between different culprits. The partner of the culprit is also guilty for
the murder as well.
Because of the nature of murder being a death executed by a mastermind, it may overlap with
other cases such as rape, sexism, bullying, heterosexism, terrorism and other related cases.
B.

Rape

Rape is a sexual violence in which the victim is forced to perform sexual intercourse with the
perpetrator. Physical force, coercion, authority abuse, incapacitation may be used to perform
rape. Often times the word is used interchangeably with sexual assault. Both the offender and
the victim can be of any gender.
C. Bullying and Cyberbullying

Bullying is an act of belittling others. Bullying itself had become a controversial act, in which the
penalty can extend to imprisonment. Bullying can be done physically, verbally, mentally or even
socially. Cyberbullying is a method of bullying through the use of internet, including social
networks such as Facebook and Myspace.
Bullying could be done in public or reach the public. The reasons of bullying varies from different
offenders. It could be a sense of racism, in which the victim is often a different race compared to
the majority of his or her environment, sexism, the culprit had irrational acts toward the victims
gender, heterosexism, in which the culprit belittles the victim for the victims different sexuality
other than the mainstream heterosexual, or more trivial ideas such as difference in intelligence,
style and at times, for fun.
The consequences of bullying is also of varying results directly or indirectly, ranging from
physical and mental damage or death of the victim, or murder of the offenders themselves.
D. Sexism
Sexism is an idea that a gender or sexuality is superior and others are inferior. Sexism is an
idea that is usable to deprive a certain gender of their lives along with their other human rights,
such as injustice acts in divorce in which men are deprived of the children and resources. This
also spreads to those who consider themselves as the non-binary or those who act differently
than according to the stereotypes of a certain gender, referring these people as lower than
humans and considering them to be targets. Sexism can be used as a reason to deprive people
of their lives based on their gender.
E.

Heterosexism

In general, heterosexuality is considered a standard around the world and labelled that
homosexuality are different, often reflected as acceptable targets of debilitating acts, and. AntiLGBTQ movements are often used as an excuse to deprive LGBTQ people of their rights to live
a proper life in the society. Heterosexism can be used as reason to ridicule lives of people
based on their differing sexuality.
F.

Racism

Being the prejudice and discrimination based on the differences of people, racism is an idea that
a race that is their own has something much more distinguishing and makes them consider that

they are superior than others and thus, others are inferior compared to them, or that a particular
race is considered inferior compared to others. The world consists of many races based on the
varying country, culture and location. The differences such as skin color and religion is often
used as an excuse to belittle others of their rights and lives.
G. Terrorism
Terrorism is an act of certain political idea at the expense of the lives of many people that do
not believe in that idea, or happen to be the acceptable target of that idea, in which having them
killed would be a justification for the idea. Violence Terrorism is linked to racism due to many
terrorism cases are often filled with a sense of racism.
H. Abortion
Abortion is an act of removing the life of a pre-birth child from the mothers body, effectively
killing the unborn child. The conflict between the right to live and the right to choose causes
controversy in enforcing the right to live to stop abortion. Some countries legalize abortion, while
some others discourage and do not legalize abortion.

Domestic Abuse

The act of violence in a family, towards a family member, performed by another member of the
same family. Abusive acts can be controlled through authorities. The damage caused to the
victim can be psychological or physical.

Live Depreciation Cases

A.

Based on Murder

One of the well-known murder cases is the serial killer name Jack the Ripper which killed 5
prostitutes who were brutally murdered. The case in itself remains unsolved as of present, as
the real identity of the culprit is still unknown.
Another murder case named the Zodiac Killer had victimized several people to death, in which
they are unrelated to one another without any notable distinct features in their characteristics
and history. The culprit challenges the police through sending postcards and at times called the
police on his or her own after killing a person.

B.

Based on Rape

An infamous rape case is the murder of Junko Furuta, a Japanese girl who was raped and
horribly tortured by several offenders for about 44 days until she died. The girl was found to be
already dead, and the offenders name were disclosed by a magazine in response, saying that
monsters do not need human rights. However, the culprits only received light sentences despite
their acts that has been considered very heinous to many people. The parents of one of the
culprit.
C. Based on Bullying and Cyberbullying
One case of cyberbullying death is the case of Megan Meier in which a hoax account named
Josh Evans was made to mess with Megan. Despite this, the offender, which is stated to be
an adult female, who started the hoax account do not receive direct punishment or criminal
charges due to lack of law to criminalize this kind of behavior. Megans family had been
responsible for anti-bullying and anti-cyberbullying education, and opened up the Megan Meier
Foundation, sharing her story.
Another case is the Anti-Bullying Day or the Pink Shirt Day, which is based on a male student
who had received bullying due to wearing pink shirt.
D. Based on Sexism
one of the cases where a banker name Arianna McGregor-Mezzotero was treated beyond
poorly by the bank where she worked. this started after her maternity leave her bonus is slashed
for some unknown reason.
E.

Based on Heterosexism

An eighth-grade young boy named Lawrence King was shot to death at school. The young boy
in question had declared his sexuality, and his different attitudes by having groups of other male
students bullying him for his difference. The bullying escalated into school shooting, which
ended his life. The culprit of the school shooting, is being held at a juvenile facility in Ventura on
$770,000 bail.

Based on Racism

One of a life-depreciating case based on racism is a case in which Daniel Stringer was attacked
by Asian gang on February 2012, and be left afterwards, leaving permanent eye damage and
necessary face reconstruction surgeries. The attackers are of unknown identity, and this was
concluded as a hate crime.
G. Based on Terrorism
The violent Islamist group named Jemaah Islamiyah are responsible for the 2002 Bali Bombing
case. Due to that case, some of them were shot during the terrorism operation and later on,
given death sentence. Since this case, they have been labeled as Foreigner Terrorists.
Their latest terror attacks was on 16 September 2014, in which they bombed Rizal Monument in
front of City Hall of Philippines, effectively killing one person and injuring 7 other people.
A number of the noticeable figures of the group such as Hambali, Abu Dujana, Azahari Husin,
Noordin Top and Dulmatin have either been arrested or executed.
H. Based on Abortion
one of the case is Roe v. Wade where Roe (P), a pregnant single woman, brought a class action
suit challenging the constitutionality of the Texas abortion laws. These laws made it a crime to
obtain or attempt an abortion except on medical advice to save the life of the mother.

Based on Domestic Abuse

one of the case is Lissette Ochoa domestic violence case which known as one of the best
known cases of spousal abuse in Colombia because of the couple's elite social status and for
the brutality of the battering perpetrated on Lissette Ochoa by her husband Rafael Dangond.

What is the History of Sahabat Anak ?

Sahabat anak is community that comes from Jambore Anak Jalanan event that being held for
the first time in 1997. There are several volunteers that comes from undergraduate students,
alumni and others that form a group. And then they saw that there are many street childs in
Indonesia that needs education to help them on achieving a better future for their life. Start with
a commitment, go through a long process from learning and understanding street childs and
fundraising. Finally, they could create Sahabat anak Community in 2005. Now, this community
have learning centre for street childs in several area in Jakarta ( Prumpung, Grogol, Cijantung,
Gambir, Manggarai, Tanah Abang, dan Kota Tua.) Beside that, there are one non formal school
in Grogol.
What does Sahabat Anak do ?
They open an recruitment to anyone who want to help children on the street. Many of people
have been volunteering to join Sahabat Anak Movement. The first movement is to be street
children best friend. many of the volunteer experienced the difficulty when handling the children.
they found out that not only the money they need but they also need a friend. The most
important things that they need are love and attention from other people. Another movement is
stop giving money to street children. everyday jakarta citizen give away small change to the
street child. the money that they gave will make the kids comfortable live on the street. they
spend the money by buying snack and the rest of the money will go to their parents ( not
biological parents but someone who ask them to earn money on the street). they also open a
child activity centre in Jakarta, so they can give a free education for children on street. the
education consist of basic education(science & social) and non formal education such as sports,
music and public speaking.

Case Research
Case research is the searching of cases where people loses their right to live, in which the
reason that causes it are related to the aforementioned terminologies.

E-Mail Interview
We conducted an e-mail interview to one of the contacts of sahabatanak.org. Since the
language of the website is also Indonesian, the original interview language is done in
Indonesian as well, while the reported interview is translated into English.
