NOTES TO STUDENTS
Check carefully the submission date and the instructions given with the
assignment. Late assignments will not be accepted.
Ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the assignment by the due
date.
You must take responsibility for managing your own time effectively.
If you are unable to hand in your assignment on time and have valid reasons such
as illness, you may apply (in writing) for an extension.
Take great care that if you use other peoples work or ideas in your assignment,
you properly reference them in your text and any bibliography.
If you are caught plagiarizing, you could have your grade reduced to Fail, or
at worst, you could be excluded from the course.

THE TASK
This assignment is a combination of Practical and Theoretical exercises.
The Grade achieved by attempting following questions is mentioned in
ASSESMENT SPECIFICATION TABLE.
Task 1:
a, Factorise 4x4 + 24x3 -28x2 - 192x -144 using the factor theorem and then solve the
equation x4 + 6x3 -7x2 - 48x -36 = 0
b, Simplify

7 x 3 5x 2 8x 9
by dividing out
( x 4)(x 1)

Task 2:
a,The increase in resistance of strip conductors due to eddy currents at power frequencies is
given by:
t sinh t sin t

2 cosh t cos t
Calculate , correct to 5 significant figures, when = 1.1 and t = 1.5.
b, A complex voltage waveform v is comprised of a 110V rms fundamental voltage at a
frequency of 60Hz, a 20% second harmonic component lagging by /3 rad, and 15% fourth
harmonic component leading by /6 rad. Write down an expression to represent voltage v.
Sketch the complex voltage waveform using harmonic synthesis over one cycle of the
fundamental waveform.
Task 3:
The modulus of rigidity G is given by G = R4/L where R is the radius, is the angle of twist
and L is the length. Find the approximate percentage error in G when R is measured 2% too
large, is measured 1.5% too small and L is measured 0.5% too small.
Task 4:

Analytical Methods for Engineers

Assignment 1

a, An oil company bores a hole 150m deep. Estimate the cost of boring if the cost is 45 for
drilling the first metre with an increasing in cost of 2.8 per metre for each succeeding
metre.
b, A drilling machine is to have 8 speeds ranging from 50 rev/min to 750 rev/min. If the
speeds form a geometric progression, determine their values, each correct to the nearest
whole number.
Task 5:
The pressure p at height h above ground level is given by p=poe-kh where po is the pressure at
ground level and k is a constant. When po is 101 kilopascals and the pressure at a height of
2000m is 80 kilopascals, determine the value of k. Sketch a graph of p against h (p is the
vertical axis and h is the horizontal axis) for values of height from zero to 15000m (when po is
still 101 kilopascals).

Task 6:
An electrical circuit is supplied by a voltage source v = 110sin120t. The resulting current is
i = 30sin(120t+/3). Express the power formula and sketch the waveform of power p.
Task 7:
The current in an alternating current circuit at any time t seconds is given by:
i = 200sin(120t + 0.548) amperes
Determine
a, the amplitude, periodic time, frequency and phase angle (with reference to 200sin120t)
b, the value of current when t = 0
c, the value of current when t = 10ms
d, the time when the current first reaches 190 A
Task 8:
a, Solve the equation:
cos3 + sin2 - 6 = 0
b, Solve the equation: 5coth2A - 3cosechA + 2 = 0
