The Disciplinary Advice
...atha kho, bhikkhave, Vipass Bhagav Araha Sammsambuddho,
...then at that time, monks, the Gracious One Vipass, the Worthy One the Perfect Sambuddha,
syanhasamaya paisalln vuhito bhikkh mantesi:
having risen from seclusion in the evening time, addressed the monks (saying):
Anujnmi, bhikkhave, caratha crika
I allow you, monks, to go on a walk
bahujanahitya bahujanasukhya,
for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people,
loknukampya atthya hitya sukhya devamanussna.
out of compassion for the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of gods and men.
M ekena dve agamittha, desetha, bhikkhave, Dhamma
Do not let two go by one (way), teach the Dhamma, monks,
dikalya majjhekalya pariyosnakalya, sttha sabyajana
(which is) good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with its meaning, with
its (proper) phrasing;
kevalaparipua parisuddha brahmacariya paksetha,
explain the spiritual life which is complete, full and pure,
santi satt apparajakkhajtik assavanat Dhammassa parihyanti,
there are beings with little dust on the eyes who are perishing through not hearing the
Dhamma,
bhavissanti Dhammassa atro.
there will be those who will understand the Dhamma.
Api ca, bhikkhave, channa vassna accayena
Then, monks at the end of six years
Bandhumat Rjadhn upasakamitabb Ptimokkhuddesy ti.

Atha kho, bhikkhave, bhikkh yebhuyyena
Then, monks, nearly all the monks
ekheneva janapadacrika pakkamisu.
departed one by one and walked in the country (teaching).
Tena kho pana samayena Jambudpe catursti vsasahassni honti.
Then at that time in the Rose-Apple Island (India) there were eighty-four thousand
monasteries.

Ekamhi hi vasse nikkhante devat saddam-anussvesu:


When one year had passed the gods let loose a cry:
Nikkhanta kho, Mris, eka vassa, paca dni vassni sesni,
One year has passed, dear Sirs, there are now (only) five years remaining,
pacanna vassna accayena
at the end of five years

When five years had passed the gods let loose a cry:
Nikkhantni kho, mris, pacavassni, eka dni vassa sesa,
Five years have passed, dear Sirs, there is now (only) one year remaining,
ekassa vassassa accayena
at the end of one year

Chasu vassesu nikkhantesu devat saddamanussvesu:
When six years had passed the gods let loose a cry:
Nikkhantni kho, mris, chabbassni, samayo dni,
Six years have passed, dear Sirs, now is the time,
Bandhumat Rjadhn upasakamitabb Ptimokkhuddesy. ti

Atha kho te, bhikkhave, bhikkh appekacce sakena iddhnubhvena,
Then, monks, some monks through their own spiritual power,
appekacce devatna iddhnubhvena,
some through the spiritual power of the gods,
ekheneva Bandhumati Rjadhni upasakamisu ptimokkhuddesy. ti

Tatra suda, bhikkhave, Vipass Bhagav Araha Sammsambuddho


Right there, monks, the Gracious One Vipass, the Worthy One the Perfect Sambuddha,
Bhikkhusaghe eva Ptimokkha uddisati:
in the midst of the Community of monks recited the Discipline thus:
Khant parama tapo titikkh, Nibbna parama vadanti Buddh.
Forbearing patience is the supreme austerity, Nibbna is supreme say the Buddhas.
Na hi pabbajito parpaghti, samao hoti para vihehayanto.
One gone forth does not hurt another, (nor does) an ascetic harass another.
Sabbappassa akaraa, kusalassa upasampad,
Not doing any bad deeds, undertaking wholesome (deeds),
Sacittapariyodapana eta Buddhna' ssana.
And purifying one's mind this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
Anpavdo anpaghto, Ptimokkhe ca savaro.
Not finding fault, not hurting, restraint in regard to the Discipline,
Mattaut ca bhattasmi, panta-ca sayansana.
Knowing the correct measure in food, (living in) a remote dwelling place,
Adhicitte ca yogo eta Buddhna' ssanan.-ti
Being devoted to meditation this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
