Why heat with wood?

The rising cost of fossil fuel and growing environmental awareness are resulting in an
ever rising demand for renewable types of energy. Advanced wood heating systems are
an environmentally responsible and economical alternative (or addition) to conventional
heating systems for fossil fuels.
Sustainable
When wood is "harvested" from sustainable
forestry, it is a renewable and environmentally
friendly source of energy and an important
part of sustainable resource management.

Top technology and reliability

Advanced biomass systems operate fully
automatically and are equipped with hightech control and safety devices for reliable,
efficient and safe operation.

CO2 neutral
When wood is burned, only as much CO2 is
released as the trees have absorbed during
the course of their life. That's why heating
with wood is CO2 neutral.

Home-grown and independent

Wood is a home-grown product, it is
harvested using a minimum of energy and it
contributes to regional economies.

Economical
Wood as an indigenous fuel is also very
affordable and not subject to wide price
fluctuations. In times of unpredictable energy
prices, wood remains stable and affordable.

Pellets
Pellets are the most compact form of wood
energy and require the smallest storage
capacity. High calorific value.

Sawdust
Untreated sawdust from sawmills, joineries
and wood-processing facilities.

Woodchips
Shredded, untreated wood, with or without
bark. Large storage capacity required.
Maximum size: G50.

Mixed wood
Unprocessed mixture of woodchips
and sawdust.
Maximum size: G50.

What you should know

What types of wood can be used?

Kb wood heating systems can be operated
using a wide variety of untreated, high-quality
wood fuels that differ in terms of their calorific
value, required storage capacity and costs
(see page 5).
The type of fuel you choose depends primarily
on the amount of storage capacity available,
the facility's requirements and the availability
of that type of fuel in your area. Since the
quality of the fuel influences the efficiency
and life expectancy of your system, you
should choose good-quality untreated wood
with a low moisture content.
How economical is wood heating?
With a biomass system, approximately 50%
of the total operating costs are accounted for
by fuel costs. Therefore, choosing a highperformance wood boiler and using highquality, affordable wood fuel are both crucial
when it comes to optimising the economy of
your system.
Although the initial outlay for a biomass
system can often be greater than for a
conventional heating system, the savings
made on fuel costs mean that the total cost
of ownership can be less than that for fossil
fuels. So your biomass system works at least
as economically as a heating system for fossil
fuels. However, as your fuel source is homegrown and independent, your fuel costs will
fluctuate less severely in comparison with
conventional fuels.

Is wood heating safe?

Absolutely. Today's wood heating systems are
just as safe and reliable as the leading oil and
gas heating systems. Equipped with advanced
safety and protection features and digital
control, the system is closely and extensively
monitored and regulated from the supply of
fuel to the heat transfer and ventilation.
Do wood heating systems provide clean
combustion?
Yes! Advanced wood heating systems
achieve similar emission ratings to leading
heating systems for fossil fuels. What's more,
heating with wood is CO2 neutral. Kb wood
heating systems meet the strict regulations
set out by the European Anti-Pollution Act.
Where can wood heating systems be used?
Kb wood heating systems are ideal for
commercial and industrial use, such as in
schools, hospitals, district heating networks,
wood-processing plants, etc. They supply
either the entire heating energy for your site or
the base load if it is being operated together
with an oil/gas boiler for peak loads. Thanks to
our comprehensive range of products, you can
expand your biomass system to create a fully
integrated system with Viessmann solar, oil/
gas boilers and individual control technology
(see page 11).

PYROT
Innovative wood boiler with rotation combustion, 90 to 480 kW.
For wood fuels with a maximum water content of 35%.

Wood boilers with state-of-the-art

technology
With its patented rotation combustion,
the Pyrot boiler is a state-of-the-art wood
combustion system. A charging auger
continuously guides the wood fuel onto a
moving grate on which the fuel gasification
takes place (with a carefully regulated
primary air supply). The combustible gases
then rise up into the rotation combustion
chamber, where they are mixed with
secondary air using a rotary fan. This ensures
complete combustion.
Clean and efficient combustion
The advanced combustion technology in the
Pyrot achieves similar emissions ratings as
those of an advanced gas combustion system
and keeps the release of CO, NOx and dust

Furthermore, unlike oil and gas, wood is a CO 2

neutral renewable source of energy. When
operated together with our digital, modulating
output control, the Pyrot boiler achieves an
efficiency level of up to 92%.
Containerised mobile heating centre
(silo as a pellet store)
The Pyrot wood boiler can be available as a
ready-to-use solution in a container for uses
where there are no boiler enclosures available
or where the on-site construction costs have
to be reduced to a minimum. This ready-touse solution incorporates the pre-assembled

PYROTEC
Wood boiler with state-of-the-art grate firing, 390 to 1250 kW.
For wood fuels with a maximum water content of 50%.

Grate combustion at its best

The Pyrotec boiler uses an underfeed stoker
with a downward external grate and a moving
burnout grate, thereby achieving the best
possible combustion results. A charging auger
guides the wood fuel into the combustion
chamber, where it is pre-dried and degassed
using an accurately controlled primary air
supply (grate combustion). On the external
grate and moving burnout grate, the fuel is
completely degassed. Accurately controlled
secondary air is blown in to ensure complete
combustion of the fuel. In doing so, the
heat is released into the boiler's triple pass
heat exchanger.
Top quality design and construction
The Pyrotec boiler is a top quality construction
for use under the toughest conditions. The
inside of the combustion chamber is fitted
out with high quality firebricks for greater
durability. All grate elements are made of

high quality, thick walled cast chromium steel

and can withstand the highest temperatures.
The Pyrotec boiler has a classic triple pass
heat exchanger for maximum heat transfer
and efficiency.
Clean and efficient combustion
The advanced combustion technology in the
Pyrotec achieves similar emissions ratings as
a modern gas combustion system and keeps
the release of CO and NOx to levels that
correspond to those of an advanced heating
system for fossil fuels. Furthermore, unlike
oil and gas, wood is a CO2 neutral, renewable
source of energy. When operated together
with our digital, modulating output control,
the Pyrotec boiler achieves efficiency levels
of up to 92%.

Fully automatic and low maintenance

A comprehensive range of system components from a single source for the reliable and
smooth operation of the entire system.

Automatic ash removal (option)

The clean combustion leaves only the
minerals contained in the wood behind as ash.
A moving grate removes the ash from the
combustion chamber and guides it into the
ash container. As soon as they have cooled
down, the ash removal conveyor moves the
ash into a large external container.

Flue gas scrubber for compliance

with strict dust emission
requirements

Pneumatic cleaning system (option)

A clean heat exchanger is crucial to the life
expectancy and efficiency of a boiler. With
short blasts of compressed air, the pneumatic
pipe cleaning system regularly removes ash
from the heat exchanger, thereby considerably
prolonging the maintenance free operation of
the boiler.

Ash removal conveyor and external ash

Flue gas return system

(Standard for Pyrot, option for Pyrotec)
Flue gas with low oxygen content (6-8%), is
mixed with primary air to ensure the complete
combustion of the fuel. This enables a low
grate temperature, which leads to greater
efficiency of the boiler. In addition, particle
emissions are reduced and the grate's service
life is increased.
Flue gas scrubber (option for pyrot)
The flue gas scrubber minimises dust
emissions by filtering the flue gases from
a multicyclone arrangement. It is supplied
completely insulated with a flue gas fan
on the side or the top and a 240 litre ash
container. An 800 litre container is also
available as an option.

Pneumatic cleaning system

(Only necessary for fuels with a high fine particle content,

such as waste wood from wood processing facilities or
woodchips with a fine particle content of > 4%.)

Comprehensive energy management

Modulating high-tech output control for maximum and safe performance of the

Advanced boiler control units for biomass

systems offer the same control convenience
as most standard control units for fossil fuel
systems. Thanks to its modulating output
control and buffer cylinder, the system's flow
temperature can be perfectly adjusted to suit
the weather conditions.
Ecotronic boiler control unit (for Pyrot)
The digital, modulating output control ensures
optimum combustion by accurately controlling
the relationship between the combustion
air, returned flue gas and fuel. The control
unit monitors:
t he flow and return temperature of the
boiler
the condition of the firebed
the depth of fuel on the grate
the flue gas temperature
t he oxygen content in the flue gas
(Lambda probe)
Pyrocontrol boiler control unit (for Pyrotec)
Fully programmable modulating output and
system control. This boiler has variable speed
control on all fans.
t he flow and return temperature of the
boiler
the depth of fuel on the grate
t he under grate pressure sensor for reliable
furnace draught
the flue gas temperature
t he combustion chamber (upper
temperature limit)
t he oxygen content in the flue gas
(Lambda probe)
Buffer cylinder
With a biomass system, a buffer cylinder
is an important component for optimum
control accuracy (ability to adapt the system
output to the actual demand). The buffer
cylinder makes it easier to stratify the water
in temperature layers, effectively reduces
frequent cycling of the combustion system

and adapts the system's flow temperature

to exactly meet the heat demand. With
all control units, there are three or five
sensor inputs available for optimum
burner modulation in accordance with the
temperature of the buffer cylinder.

All control units for biomass

systems are made in-house.
Other benefits are ...

Vitocontrol multi-boiler control unit

Storage and supply systems

Every fuel store and supply system is unique and was constructed for a specific
application. Our advanced, fully automatic supply solutions are delivered ready
for installation.

Cellar storage with auger discharge

Cellars or former oil storage rooms can be
converted into pellet stores without any major
work. Pellets can be blown across large
distances and special augers transport them
reliably and with low energy consumption.
Pellet stores must be 100% dry.
Bunker with rotating fuel extraction
This is the right solution for square or slightly
rectangular bunkers. An articulated arm
pushes the fuel onto a delivery conveyor.

Blower air feed systems in interior rooms

Bunker with push-floor delivery

Ideal for large, rectangular storage bunkers.
Sliding hydraulic push rods guide the fuel onto
a supply auger. This enables quick filling with
large amounts of fuel.
Silo with funnel
The fuel is supplied from the silo via a
pendulum auger in the funnel safely thanks
to the automatic reversing action. A fire tested
rotary feeder separates the silo from the
heating system. This system is recommended
for wood processing facilities.

Filling small bunkers from above

Safe and reliable operation

Kb wood heating systems meet the strictest safety requirements.
High-tech safety equipment using state-of-the-art technology guarantees
safe and reliable operation of your system at all times.

Reignition protection
Security against reignition through flying
sparks. Permanently present and monitored
barrier layer and permanent, monitored
negative pressure operation.
Burn-back resistant device
A sensor situated in the fuel charging pipe
recognises the danger of burn-back and
immediately counteracts this by increasing the
amount of fuel being charged into the boiler.
Burn-back protection device
A horizontally acting slider with spring return
interrupts the fuel supply in the event of a
power failure and the risk of burn-back. When
there is negative pressure in the fuel store,
a rotary air lock is used in place of the slider
for the same function. The rotary air lock
prevents unwanted leakage air getting into the
combustion process.

Safety heat exchanger

A safety heat exchanger built into the boiler
is connected to a mains cold water supply
and prevents the boiler from overheating in
the event of a power failure. A non-electric,
thermally activated valve is triggered at
a predetermined boiler temperature and
cools the boiler water down via indirect heat
transfer through the heat exchanger.
Additional safety devices
In addition to the listed safety devices, the
Kb wood boilers can be also equipped with
all safety devices as required by relevant
safety standards.
Low water shutdown
Pressure and temperature sensor
Limited safety temperature
