EMERGENCY WARD
December 10, 2014
DAY 5
Today is Wednesday and another day here in ODH. After the typhoon named Ruby, going back
to reality was little bit hard because of waking up again so early. We arrived around exactly 6:05
in the morning.
Jillian and Ermita was our new head nurse for this week. Same routine just like our last duty.
They checked each of our paraphernalias that we would going to use. They told us also what we
should do and expect for this day.
Mam Elena came smiling toward us but then it all gone suddenly when the head nurses didnt do
their assigned task that mam told to them. They were sorry for what happened. As a staff nurse, I
felt disappointed because I want to start our day with no problems at all.
I was assigned in bed number one. We encountered different cases. I always help my co-staff
nurses when I dont have any patients. I experienced to handle a patient suffering from heart
problem in bed number three since Anthony was in OPD that time. I always monitored his blood
pressure with the help of Mam Elena for the reason that I cant easily heard the systolic and
diastolic pressure of my patient. The doctor and the relatives of my patient made me felt toxic
and I hate that feeling but I did not let my feelings to affect my whole duty.
Then going back to the bed I was assigned, I encountered a burn patient in his right arm and legs.
I just assisted the nurse for cleaning it. He removed all the blisters by pouring PNSS and pricking
it by needle. Then, he applied ointment on the affected site. After the procedure he covered it
using a sterile gauze.
At the afternoon while waiting, where prenatal checkup was assigned, Jillian told me to get the
AOG, FH and FHT of the pregnant mother with Joryen. I enjoyed doing it.

I leave Joryen when my bed had patient. He was punched by his brother. He need to undergo a
minor surgery from his upper lip. Dr. Reyes do the procedure. I always put pressure on the
affected site so that the bleeding would be lessen. My patient had 5 stitches in his upper lip all in
all. I administer also a drug via IM with supervision of Mam Elena.
Before are dismissal we do our post conference. Mam Elena told us that all reporters that are not
yet done should be ready for tomorrows reporting or what we called brain storming. Then she
told us too that we should be ready for the next exam.
I felt really tired for this day but still I was truly satisfied to my care that I gave to all of my
patients that Ive handled.
December 11, 2014
DAY 6
I was assigned on bed number 2. Same routine just last duty. Mam Elena was in good mood.
While were waiting for a patients Mam Elena told us to start reporting. I was the one who start
for the reason that Ermita was not yet ready. My topic is all about burn. The next reporter was
Ermita. He discussed more about Rabies. Then Cyril turns with his topic about the difference
between left and right sided heart failure. And the last was Farrah with her topic was all about
microorganism. I enjoyed the discussion because we do have a brain storming too. New
knowledge was developed in us toward that activity.
I just only have two patient for this day suffering from high blood pressure. They were couple. I
just monitored them and made some advices for them to live a good health. They appreciated
what I have said. I really adored communicating with my patients especially when it comes to
their history and when my patient is older than me. My curiosity is working everyday every time
Ive handle different patients with different cases.
Mam Elena told us that we would be half day for this day to fix our cases in OR and DR.

INSIGHTS
Emergency Room helps me as a staff nurse to develop general, world knowledge. Many, if not
most, students have a rather limited experience and knowledge of the world they inhabit both
cognitively and affectively. ER opens windows on the world seen through different eyes. This
educational function of ER cannot be emphasized enough by other area in hospital.
