NUS-INDIA RESEARCH INITIATIVES (IRI)

REQUEST FOR SUPPORT F0R (A) INCOMING VISITS BY ACADEMICS / STUDENTS AND
(B) OUTGOING TRIPS BY NUS ACADEMIC STAFF MEMBERS / STUDENTS
Background
To strengthen and promote research collaborations between NUS and leading Indian universities / institutes,
IRI is prepared to help to co-fund (a) visits to NUS by academics and students from such institutions, and (b)
trips to Indian institutions of higher learning by NUS staff and students.
Procedure for submission of request
Academic staff makes the proposal with detailed justification, using the attached form, to HOD seeking
approval and request for funding if necessary. Proposed provisions must be in line with NUS guidelines.
Dean / secondary funding approver (eg grantor) approves the proposal with additional support (if needed)
so that total funding from various sources excluding IRIs amounts to two third or more of the total cost.
Co-funding of projects could be sourced from :
o Academic staff / students personal or research grants
o Departments fund
o Deans Office funds
o Any other external sources
Thereafter, the application is routed to IRI for approval. IRI is prepared to provide up to one-third of the
funding proposed. IRI will review the proposal subject to the availability of funds, merits of the case, and
number of previous applications from a given academic staff. Upon agreement, a copy of the approved
proposal will be conveyed to the staff, HOD and Dean/Grantor. In instances where questions are, IRI will
review them with staff prior to approval.
Variances to co-funding norms by IRI will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be very
exceptional.
Applications should be submitted at least 2 months prior to the start date to ensure that there is sufficient
time for processing and planning.
Arrangements for visit
Upon receipt of the approval, staff should proceed to engage the visiting academic / student and make
arrangements for any proposed visit to NUS. For outgoing trips, staff / student should make their own
arrangements. Should there be any changes (eg period of visit) vis a vis the proposal, staff should alert
IRI for record and planning purposes.
In general, reimbursements should be sought from IRI after the visit/trip has been completed. A summary
of expenditure, together with a report of the visit/trip, should be submitted to IRI through the Head within
one month after the end of the visit/trip. IRI will make arrangements to transfer its share upon receipt of a
satisfactory report and summary of expenditure. The report should demonstrate how the objective /
deliverables were met, and proposed follow-ups.
