Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities:
To take this course the student should have the basic knowledge of engineering
mechanics, strength of materials, calculus, differential equations and matrix analysis.
Course Description:
This course introduces the theoretical basics and practical application of the finite element
method to 1D, 2D and 3D solid mechanics problems.
Course Outcomes:
On successful completion of course students will be able to:
Apply Rayleigh-Ritz method and Galerkin method to formulate FEM equations.
Formulate stiffness matrix for two noded bar, truss and beam elements and solve
problems with 3 dof.
Derive stiffness matrix for two noded beam element with 3 dof per node and
apply transformation to obtain stiffness matrix for frames. Derive strain
displacement relation, stress-strain relationship, equations of equilibrium, boundry
conditions and explain plane stress and plane strain problems in an elastic
continuum (linear problems)
Determine the stiffness matrices for three noded triangular element(CST) and 4
noded rectangular element for plane stress and plane strain problems. Explain:
Convergence criteria for selection of displacement models, discretisation of
continuum, assembly of global stiffness and load matrices and displacement
boundry conditions.
Employ Isoparametric formulation of finite elements: Construct shape functions
for higher order elements using natural co-ordinate system including for eight
noded parabolic curved isoparametric element. Determine element stiffness
matrix for four noded quadrilateral element. Use Gauss quadrature technique.
Obtain load vector for eight noded rectangular isoparametric element for body
forces and surface traction.
Derive strain displacement and stress-strain relation for axisymmetric problems.
Determine stiffness matrix for three noded ring element. Explain volume coordinates. Determine stiffness matrix for four noded tetrahedron element.
