GRADUATE

SUCCESS

STORIES
Youll find Staffordshire University graduates all
around the globe, engaged in all kinds of roles to
keep the wheels of business, science, industry
and commerce turning.

Our awards are highly prized, carry considerable

weight and are frequently recognised as a
passport to exciting careers.

Here are just a few examples of Staffordshire University graduates who have gone on
to achieve great things
After completing a degree in Mechanical
Engineering at Visvesvaraya Technological
University, India, I chose Staffordshire University to
study for an MSc in Computing.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Staffordshire
University and was particularly excited about
the work placement opportunities. Its hard to
believe, but I was fortunate enough to spend
my placement at Viglen Ltd., a Lord Alan Sugar
company! I even met him once at the office.

I graduated from Staffordshire University

with great employability skills and an
excellent portfolio something thats
essential in graphic design. I worked to
real challenges and live briefs, developed
great communication and presentation skills
and won the London-based brand agency,
Coley Porter Bell, Shine Award. This meant
a 3,000 cash prize and a three-month work
placement. I now work for Coley Porter Bell
full-time as a graphic designer. Its proper
work, with real commercial value, for global
brand owners like Unilever and Nestl.
Jia Ying Gnoh
BA(Hons) Graphic Design graduate,
employed at Coley Porter Bell

18

After the placement, I completed my

dissertation then immediately began applying
for employment, securing a graduate-level job
at Logica PLC, now a part of CGI and one of the
worlds leading software companies.
Throughout my studies, my mentor, advisor
and dissertation tutor at Staffordshire University
provided high levels of support and guidance.
My placement officer also gave valuable help and
advice. It was good to meet and thank everyone
who had supported me so well at the graduation
ceremonies.
Veer Reddy Karri
MSc Computing graduate,
employed at Logica PLC, now a part of CGI

I would highly recommend Staffordshire University to

all international students.
I graduated with an MBA in October 2008 and can
honestly say that the University made a huge difference
to my career. I found myself in a different league!
Studying and working with students from a number of
different countries helped me to better understand and
appreciate other cultures. My lecturers were inspirational
for their sheer knowledge and brilliance. Very hands-on,
they were always available and inspired me to achieve
greater academic laurels. I am still in contact with them
and seek their advice on career progression.
Key features of the MBA programme included a study
tour to the Czech Republic and a 48-week industrial
placement.
There was no looking back for me after I was successful
in securing my placement with British Telecom (BT)
something that helped my learning and development
tremendously. I was then invited to join BT full-time as
a Marketing Manager once my studies and placement
were complete.
I believe that my MBA dissertation, which was based on
Customer Relationship Marketing, was instrumental in
securing my job with BT and helped me in the interview.
I now have a very rewarding career with BT. Having
spent several years with the organisation in the UK, I
currently work in the Asia-Pacific region for BT India. As
for the immediate future, I plan to complete a DPhil in
Marketing.

After studying at the University of Applied Sciences in

Rosenheim, Germany, I came to Staffordshire University
in 2006 to complete an MSc in Computer Science.
I chose Staffordshire University because of the high
standard of its computing courses and because of the
computing facultys excellent reputation. A friend who
had previously studied at the University also rated it
highly.
Staffordshire University teaches you things that are more
important than just knowledge. They are exceptionally
career-focused and have a great way of making you
more aware of your chosen career area and help you to
develop clear views about where you want to go in life.
The lecturers at Staffordshire University are extremely
knowledgeable and the facilities are very good. It is also
rewarding to be able to work alongside students from
other countries.
The University has an excellent Careers Office - in fact
the careers team provided valuable help and guidance
when I applied to join leading business information
company, Thomson Reuters. The support I was given
was particularly useful, as I was not used to writing CVs
in English. The Careers Office also provided thorough
interview training. I still have the notes I made and keep
using some of the tips I learnt back then.
Gregor Porzel
MSc Computer Science graduate,
employed as Project Manager at Thomson Reuters

Nitin Raj Srivastava

MBA graduate,
employed as Marketing Manager for BT India

help make this a safe
environment for
students. I believe that
our campuses and halls of residence
are among the safest in the country.
PC Keith Emery, Stoke Campus
Liaison Officer
By international standards, the UK is a particularly
safe country to live, work and study in. Great
Britain has a tolerant society. The population is
diverse and many religions and ethnic groups live
here in harmony.
In the county of Staffordshire, crime is below
the national average. Staffordshire Police works
hard to cut crime across the Staffordshire and
Stoke-on-Trent areas and, as a result, overall
crime has fallen significantly over recent years.

provides an opportunity to study the success of Islamic
finance, particularly in the current economic climate, to
evaluate its principles and understand its unique approach
to finance for todays businesses and society.

About this award

Europe, USA and many other parts of the world have been
in deep recession since 2008. This recession was mainly
caused by the collapse of the conventional banking and
finance model
operated in most parts of the world. The Islamic finance and
banking industry has been growing at annual rates of 1520% over the last decade and is expected to continue in the
foreseeable future.
At the end of 2011 the global Islamic finance services
industry was valued at USD 1.4 trillion. The supply of
qualified professionals to take up careers in this industry falls
way short of demand.
The success of the Islamic finance is mainly due to a sound
theoretical foundation based on the following principles:
Rigorous ethical principles
Interest-free banking
A system based on real asset and real business
transactions NOT on high speculation and high risk
activities.

of exercise and health by broadening knowledge of key
concepts in public health practice and developing a more
independent approach to learning. Using experiential
knowledge to enhance postgraduate-level academic study,
you will become a more informed, efficient and effective
professional.

About the award

Physical activity has been described as the best buy in

public health. The increasing realisation of the importance
of promoting higher levels of physical activity, coupled with
the UK governments agenda to reduce the proportion
of sedentary and obese children and adults, requires a
coordinated public health approach.
To help meet this requirement, Staffordshire University has
led the way by developing the MSc Physical Activity and
Public Health - the first academic programme of its kind in
the UK to be offered by online distance learning.
The award covers the main areas of public health, such as
the principles that underpin practice and epidemiology.
It focuses on research methods and analysis of both
quantitative and qualitative inquiry (often used as evidence
in health improvement), physical activity specific modules
relating to disease prevention and critiquing interventions,
and strategies around working with and engaging
communities. Finally, there is an independent research
project of your choice, with a specialist focus on physical
activity.
