Fluid Transfer

Purpose:
The transfer of fluids from primary vessel to secondary storage tanks while primary vessel is pressurized.
Potential Hazards:

Combustible/or sour gas/fluids on location.

Environmental impact.

Action:

Information:

1. Ensure all personnel on location are aware

of the operation taking place. Observe wind
direction and have LEL monitor activated and
on person

1. LEL monitor will alert the crew if the

area is unsafe.

2. Do a visual check of your shipping line.

2. To make sure shipping line is rigged

in correctly and secured.

3. Purge sweet gas through shipping line to check

for leaks before transferring fluids.

3. To ensure your line is clear and free

of leaks and air.

4. Check fluid levels in storage tank. Do not

transfer fluid if storage tank capacity is at 80%
or more.

4. To ensure fluid level in storage tank

is low enough to accommodate
transfer of fluid.

5. Open thief hatches on storage tank and ensure

all vents are unobstructed. Use proper Fall
Arrest PPE at this time.

5. Storage tank will pressure up if not

vented properly.

6. Open valve(s) on storage tank. Recheck line

for leaks.

6. Storage tank may already contain

fluid and you will be filling your
shipping line.

7. Record level in pressure tank sight glasses and

storage tank.

7. To make sure levels are correct.

Be wary of false levels due to
slugging or foaming.

8. Slowly open inside shipping valve on pressure

tank to outside shipping valve on pressure tank.

8. To ensure valve is not obstructed.

Action:

Information:

9. Slowly open outside valve on pressure

tank to begin transfer of fluid to storage
tank.

9. Pressure in pressure vessel will begin

pushing fluid over to storage tank.
Never transfer fluid with
personnel on tank.

10. Walk shipping line to check for leaks

and to ensure fluid is going into the
storage tank. Constantly monitor the
pressure vessel and storage tank until
transfer is complete.

10. Transfer of fluid in operation.

Ensure at least two crew members
are involved in operation at all
times.

11. When transfer is complete close shipping

valves on pressure tank.

11. Stops fluid transfer.

12. Purge sweet gas through shipping line to

clear line of fluid.

12. Empties shipping line of fluid.

13. Close valve(s) on storage tank.

13. Isolates shipping line.

14. Record levels in pressure tank and storage

tank in the field notes

14. Acquires proper fluid production.
