Assembly polls have been

Congress are the main parties

polluting units in Korba
RAIPUR
Chhattisgarh Government finally pulled up its shocks to
check rising pollution graph in the industrial city Korba.
Korba is home to dozens of major and minor industrial units.
Principal Secretary of the housing and environment department and the chairman of Chhattisgarh Environment
Conservation Board (CECB), N Baijendra Kumar chaired a
meeting to discuss various aspects of this plan with the officials concerned in Naya Raipur. He also reviewed the steps
taken by the factories and industrial units as their contribution to reduce pollution level. Kumar warned the management of all the industrial units of public and private sectors
to face strict actions, if they ever found violating and not
adopting all the technical measurements required to control
the pollution level. He also reviewed the works initiated and
proposed by all the main industries as measurements to con-

trol pollution level from their end. Those present in the meeting included the member secretary of CECB, Devendra Singh
and officials concerned from BALCO, SECL, NTPC,
Chhattisgarh State Electricity Company (East and West) and
the commissioner of Korba Municipal Corporation (KMC).As
per the notification issued by Environment and Forest
Ministry, Government of India, discussion on preparing a
comprehensive plan for disposing of the fly ash was held.
Kumar said that 100 per cent use of fly ash is possible by better management. He added that most of the electricity production units are based on coal and due to increasing electricity demand; the production units are discharging fly ash
in extra quantity. He issued instructions to KMC commissioner for taking appropriate steps for better management of
sewage treatment plant, solid waste management and stopping commercial and domestic use of coal. A009

Govt to build roads in extremist-hit areas in mission mode

RAIPUR
The government has decided to
construct highways in extremisthit states in mission mode as these
are harbinger of economic prosperity, Road, Transport and Highways
Minister Nitin Gadkari said
recently. "Highways are the harbinger of economic prosperity. The
government has decided to construct roads and bridges in
extremist-affected areas in mission mode under the leadership of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi,"
Gadkari said addressing the CMs
and PWD Ministers of extremist-

hit states in Raipur. He said

extremism was a threat to democracy and government was serious
to bring in development in such
areas through faster construction
of roads. Gadkari said his ministry

would soon come up with an online

system for tracking of projects in
such areas. The Minister also
reviewed the projects to resolve
the bottlenecks in speedy implementation of road works being executed through the state PWDs.
The Ministry of Road Transport &
Highways had taken up improvement of road connectivity in 34
severely Maoist-affected districts
covering a total length of 5,477 km
and eight states including
Chhattisgarh
and
MP,
Maharashtra under road requirement Plan (RRP).

Raipur: Women are not safe in

the BJP government's rule in
Chhattisgarh, main Opposition in
the state, Congress has alleged. "It is
unfortunate that the BJP, which succeeded in forming the government in
the state by promising safety and
security for women, has failed to do
so," state Congress unit president
Bhupesh Baghel said. To further substantiate his point, Baghel cited various incidents in the state, like the
last year's sterilisation botch-up
leading to death of nearly 13 women,
alleged removal of uterus of some
women in the state by doctors for
money, the Jhaliyamari incident (in
which tribal girls of a residential
school in Jhaliyamari village of
Kanker district were allegedly raped
in 2013), and over thousand women
reportedly being missing in Jashpur.
He also cited another incident of
Durg district, which recently came to
light, in which an injured college stu-

dent was in June last year allegedly

raped during admission in a government hospital after being administered an injection which rendered
her unconscious. Later, she was
harassed by two police constables
with an obscene video of her which
they had shot. Baghel said that the
incident of the patient being administered a sedative, instead of being
provided proper treatment, and then
raped and later blackmailed by
police personnel proves that there is
no rule of law in the state. There cannot be anything more scary than a
girl being forced to bear the harassment for six months after being
intimidated, the Congress leader
said. Even after the incident came to
light, the police and the health
department tried to shield the culprits instead of taking immediate
action, he alleged. This makes it
clear that women are not safe in
Chhattisgarh, he added.

Basmati under threat,

GM crops play foul

In India, as elsewhere in the world, scientists supporting genetically modified (GM) seed companies seem to have facilitated field trials of several food crops illegally, for over a decade.
Indias most prestigious agricultural export Basmati rice is in danger of being banned in
the European Union and other genetically modified-sensitive markets, as consignments were found
tainted with genetically modified organisms in November 2014. Experts at the UK-based GM certification firm, Cert ID, feel the contamination is intentional as the more expensive basmati was found
adulterated with cheap GM rice. Simultaneously, the European Union tightened controls on
imports of Chinese rice products after several shipments were found contaminated by GM rice,
though GM rice was never approved for cultivation in China.

n India also, scientists

supporting GM seed
companies seem to have
facilitated field trials of
several food crops illegally, for
over a decade. The then Union
Environment Minister Jairam
Ramesh placed an official
moratorium on these trials
once he learnt of the dangers.
Recently, biotechnology experts
used the Indian Science
Congress to press for open field
trials of GM crops. The Centre
should first investigate the
extent of illegal GM food cultivation; the firms and officials
involved; and the inroads made
into the food chain. In 2002,
Tamil Nadus women farmers
joined the Coalition for a GM
Free India and exposed a uni-

versity in Coimbatore for

experimenting with BT Corn;
many companies were found
engaging in GM rice field trials. Greenpeace activists raided a village near Hyderabad
where trials were in progress;
the impugned company was
pressing farmers to buy herbicide Glufosinate that is banned
in Europe for causing birth
defects. In 2007, after EU and
other countries rejected
imports of rice contaminated
with GM strains, India banned
GM rice field trials in three
states of the Basmati-rice
export zone. But no one
assessed the damage already
done by the secret experiments. About 90 per cent of
UN member countries, includ-

ing most of Europe,

do
not permit GM
crops or unlabelled GM food.
As awareness
grows, health conscious citizens are asking if Indias BT Cotton
seeds have been used to
extract edible oil and
pushed into the food chain.
A single cancelled agriexport order could shake
confidence in the new
regime; hence Prime
Minister Modi should be
cautious with regard to GM
crops as the small size of
Indian farms makes them more
vulnerable to genetic contamination.

Chinese manja injures

many in Jaipur, kills birds
Jaipur
Many people were given stitches after being badly hurt by
Chinese manja (kite-line) during kite-flying festival of Makar
Sankranti here. The neck of
some people got badly slit and
such cases were on the rise this
year. "A few of them could have
been life-threatening had the
injury been a little deeper", said
doctors who treated many victims at SMS Hospital.
A young girl driving her
scooty also got injured from the
Chinese manja. Scores of others
were also injured in very similar cases. Chinese manja is
made of synthetic material.
These strings don't break easily
like cotton strings. Chinese
manja can easily cut through
the wings and flesh of birds and
animals too resulting in serious
injuries and deaths. Since the

Chinese manja is made of

nylon, it is not biodegradable
and remains in the environment for a long time. So, hanging strings keep injuring birds

which sometimes lead to death.

Many bird lovers have been
demanding ban on Chinese
manja. The Chinese strings are
made of synthetic material and

are hazardous to animals and

birds as they do not break.
They tend to cut through the
wings and flesh of birds and
animals.

Centre taking major steps to improve

investment climate in the country
Gandhinagar
Speaking at the Seminar Invest in India Summit 2015
Financing for Future Growth, held on the sidelines of
Vibrant Gujarat, in Gandhinagar, Minister for Finance and
Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitely said that this Government
has taken major steps to improve the investment climate in
the last several months and will continue to do so. The minister pointed out that investment climate had changed for the
positive, to begin with, because there is a dynamic and decisive Prime Minister at the helm of affairs. As a reminder to
the people, he said that, the Government must come out of
traditional mind sets of pro-business or pro-poor and focus on
comprehensive development.
He also said that the governments direction must be
clear and the pace in that direction must be quick. Speaking
to a largely corporate audience, Arun Jaitely said that the
country needs investments, as it has a long distance to go
especially in developing some of the eastern and north east
states. He briefly touched upon the areas in which the government has taken positive steps to improve the investment
climate, such as opening of Insurance and defence sector for
foreign investments. He said that if India could buy defence
equipment from foreign countries than why not permit

to avoid veto by minority. He pointed out that the previous

Drugs banned in 2 states

procured by Cgarh govt
RAIPUR
In what could be termed as a serious flaw in
the system of procurement of medicines,
Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation
Ltd (CGMSC) has recently placed orders
for large quantities of two drugs,
Ceftriaxone injections and Diclofenac
Sodium tab, from J&K based Vivek
Pharmachem. These drugs are banned
in two states. This revelation comes
almost two months after 13 deaths due
to botched sterilizations where medicines suspected to be laced with rat poison
were
procured
from
two
Chhattisgarh-based pharma companies.
According to sources, CGMSC had placed
orders for purchase of Ceftriaxone injections
worth Rs 19.53 lakhs and Diclofenac Sodium tablets
worth Rs 11 lakhs, respectively, with Vivek Pharmachem,
which in the past has been banned by the governments of J&K
and Tamil Nadu. In absence of any centralized information system for reporting dubious or substandard manufacturers, the
company has succeeded in obtaining the order from
Chhattisgarh government.
According to sources, various drugs manufactured by Vivek
Pharmachem were banned in 2013-14 after samples collected
from the market were found to be sub-standard by J&K Drug
and Food Control Department. Information available on the
department's website reveals that samples of Ceftriaxone,

Ampicillin (500 mg) and Vancomycin hydrochloride injections had failed tests due to various reasons. The department had also
launched prosecution proceedings
against the company for it in May
2014.
As per information available
on Tamil Nadu Medical Services
Corporation website, besides
Diclofenac Sodium tab IP 50 mg
(252), injections of B complex
liver extract with choline (D147),
manufactured
by
Vivek
Pharmachem, were banned due to
poor quality. While the ban on
Diclofenac was imposed for a period of
two years from January 20, 2014, the
injections were banned from June 2013 to
June 2015. Principal Secretary (health), Alok
Shukla, said all efforts are made to ensure procurement from
quality manufacturers. He said CGMSC always checks good
manufacturing certificates issued to the manufacturer by
respective states before placing orders. "However, if one particular batch of a drug is found substandard, it does not necessarily mean that all batches would be of the same poor quality", he
added. He said Chhattisgarh on its part is constantly trying to
improve its procurement system and has now decided to place
orders with companies that have a minimum turnover of Rs 10
crore or more.

Big boost to renewable energy: U.S. firm commits

$4 billion and 5 gigawatts of solar in major deals

jobs, will be based in Gujarat. Prime

Minister Modi has turned his eye to
the countrys overall solar industry,
saying that he wants foreign companies to lead investment of over $100
billion to help push Indias solar energy capacity to 100 gigawatts, some 33
times what it is now. SunEdison and
other major international solar firms
are being drawn in by Modis enthusiasm and the countrys overall potential. U.S. Secretary of State John
Kerry travelled to India earlier this
week to lay the groundwork for
President Obamas visit at the end of
January. India and the U.S. are working together on a number of initiatives such as micro-grid development
and air pollution monitoring. India is
the worlds third-largest emitter of
green house gases and as the countrys economy rapidly expands emissions will continue to rise steadily and
even sharply in coming years.

India took a big stride toward renewable energy goalsthrough two deals with
the large U.S.-based solar company
SunEdison. In dual announcements,
SunEdison revealed that it signed two
memorandums of understanding with
India: to develop five gigawatts of renewable energy within five years in
Karnataka and to build a $4 billion solar
manufacturing facility as a joint venture
with Adani Enterprises. It will be the
largest manufacturing facility of its kind
in India, with an annual production
capacity of 7.5 gigawatts. This facility
will create ultra-low cost solar panels
that will enable us to produce electricity
so cost effectively it can compete unsubsidized and without incentives, with fossil
fuels, said Ahmad Chatila, President
and Chief Executive Officer of
SunEdison.The facility, which will create

Cabinet approves
new industrial policy

Long, tough road to

make India easiest
place for business

Naya Raipur
Chhattisgarh cabinet has
T heendorsed
new industrial policy for
2014-19 at a meeting chaired by CM
Raman Singh. Briefing media persons
about the cabinet decisions, Singh said
that the policy includes the provision of
subsidy worth Rs.5 crore for establishing an industrial park in the private sector. Provision of establishing 'Land
Bank' of over 10,000 hectares for various
industries has also been included in the
policy, he added. Moreover, to promote
bicycle manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, electronic products, textile industries etc, these industries will be included as "priority" in the new policy. The
prescribed limit for mega project will be
reduced for these industries, so that
they may
get its benefits on lesser investment, he
said. Under the new industrial policy,
the CM Cluster Development Scheme
will be initiated, under which the state
government will provide Rs.50 lakh as
subsidy. Singh said that on the lines of
'Make in India' concept, the state will
implement 'Make in Chhattisgarh' policy under which manufacturing units of
the related industries will be promoted
with priority. The domiciles of
Chhattisgarh will be encouraged to set
up their own enterprises and they will
also be provided better employment
opportunities. Capital investment in the
state will be promoted by making industry competitive in comparison to other
states.

BALCO gets nod for 1,200 MW captive power unit

Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) said it has received approval from
the Chhattisgarh government to start a 1,200 MW captive power plant comprising
four units of 300 MW each at Korba. "We are very grateful to the government of
Chhattisgarh for the approval granted, at a time when we are celebrating our
Golden Jubilee Year. It enables us to further ramp up our state-of-the-art aluminium smelter, thereby taking the aluminium capacity to 570,000 MT per annum,"
said CEO and whole-time director Ramesh Nair.

Narendra Modi may have pledged to make India the

easiest place to do business but experts remain sceptical
about how the prime minister intends to overcome obstacles such as corruption, red tape and an arduous tax
regime. Hundreds of executives gathered this week in
Modi's long-time fiefdom of Gujarat to hear him promise
to transform India's business climate, with unlimited
reforms designed to attract foreign investment. Everyone
from World Bank president Jim Yong Kim to US
Secretary of State John Kerry publicly heaped praise on
Modi's efforts to kickstart economic growth. But behind
the scenes at the major Vibrant Gujarat summit, the
mood among some was more cautious while economists
said the government still needs to tackle a string of substantial reforms. India currently ranks 142 out of 189 on
the World Bank's "ease of doing business survey", behind
its arch rival Pakistan, and even dropping two places on
the list last year.
Kerry hailed Modi as a visionary in his address at
the summit, enthused by his government's promises to
cut a swathe through red tape and simplify a tax regime
that often leaves foreign business in despair. But, speaking on the sidelines of the gathering, one of Kerry's own
officials struck a more cautious wait-and-see note. "I
think there are companies who are watching to make
sure that what'sprojected actually happens," a senior US
State Department official said in Gandhinagar. Also
speaking at the three-day gathering, Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley defended his government's pace of reforms
so far and stressed that Modi's pledge to make India the
easiest place to do business was not an empty slogan.

It has been tough to get

20 wickets in this Test
series: Steve Smith

ustralia skipper Steven Smith said

that the pitches did not "break up
quite as much as expected" during
the four-match Test series against India
and it hampered the home side's chances of
winning by a bigger margin. After winning
the first two Tests in Adelaide and
Brisbane, Australia could have had better
results in the remaining matches, but they
failed to grab 20 wickets each time, thus
settling for a 2-0 series victory.
"It has been tough to get 20 wickets in
this Test series. "The wickets haven't broken up quite as much as we thought they
might. I don't know the reasons for that.
But it's been tough and the bowlers have
toiled extremely hard throughout these
four Test matches. I am really proud of the
way they've gone throughout these games,"
Smith said at the post-match press conference. Chasing a stiff target of 349 for victory, India suffered a dramatic collapse in the
post tea session but somehow managed to
eke out a draw by finishing on 252 for
seven in 89.5 overs on an absorbing fifth
day's play of the fourth Test at the SGC on
Saturday. Expressing disappointment over
his side not being able to bowl out India on
a fifth day track, Smith said: "It would
have been nice to get the win today. I
thought 90 overs with them having a little
go at us would be a good chance to win this
game but it wasn't to be. I think the wicket
didn't break up quite as much as I thought
it would. There wasn't much up and down
movement with balls on the stumps.
"I think with Nathan Lyon bowling into
the rough, there were a few that hit the
gloves and went straight into the ground.
On a different day those pop up and you get
wickets. "But the boys toiled really hard

today and we are disappointed not to get

the result in the end," he added. It has been
a tough series for Australia from an emotional point of view with the loss of Phillip
Hughes in late November and the whole
rescheduling thereafter. Regular captain
Michael Clarke, too, just played the first
Test and mid-series Smith was appointed
as the new skipper after he pulled out
injured. "We can be extremely proud of this
series win," said Smith.
"From the first game in Adelaide, the
boys showed a lot of heart to go out there
and play the way we did. To win that first
Test was extremely big for us. There have
been some tough moments throughout the
series but the way the boys have held
themselves has been terrific. We set out at
the start to win the series and we did that
2-0 and we are extremely satisfied with our
results." Talking about his captaincy experience, Smith said, "I've really enjoyed it.
I've had a great time. "All the boys have
been terrific around the group. A lot of the
senior players have been helping me out.
The boys have done everything I've asked
of them. They've worked their backsides off
every day and I can't be prouder of them for
the way they've performed throughout this
series." Had Australia held on to their
catches in the last two Tests, the margin of
defeat might have been different. Smith
himself missed a couple chances but pulled
out a screamer to dismiss Rohit Sharma on
Saturday. "The spider-cam catch was just
one of those things. It was right above the
wire and looked like it was moving as I was
going to the ball. I think it's a great innovation, a great camera, but I think it just
needs to be in the right place at the right
time to be honest.

India should look for a fresh

set of bowlers: Sunil Gavaskar

down heavily on the

C oming
Indian bowling attack in

Australia, former captain Sunil

Gavaskar on Saturday said that
it's time "we look for a fresh set
of bowlers" in the Test ranks to
ensure better showing in overseas conditions. The attack comprising
Ishant
Sharma,
Mohammed
Shami,
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh
Yadav
and
Ravichandran
Ashwin failed to pick 20 Australian wickets in
all the four matches as the visitors conceded
the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by going down 20. Gavaskar said that it's time for change.
"This was the second that three out of the
four bowlers were in Australia and for the second time they were taken to the cleaners as
they were in 2011-12. So you really can't keep
them going despite the fact that they might
bag wickets in a domestic series because overseas in the last three years they have done
nothing. So like we have done with the batting, we have to look at a fresh set of bowlers
and you will find them in domestic cricket,"
Gavaskar told. "If you see the way the new
batting came good. When the last trip was
there, you had Rahul Dravid, Virender
Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman,

they still weren't able to do much on that particular trip. Now on this trip you had new
batsmen. Apart from Kohli everybody else was
playing in Australia for the first time. You
showed faith in the new lot, I think you got to
show faith and patience in a new lot of
bowlers as well," he added. Even if Shami got
a five-wicket haul in the Sydney Test or offspinner Ashwin, who also bagged four at the
SCG, the runs came at a price and Gavaskar
said that bowling surely let the team down. "I
think if they had the bowling then it would
have been a completely different story.
But they did not have the bowling. And
even granted the pitches were very good for
batting, it just wasn't penetrative enough and
it didn't look as if they wanted to take 20
wickets.

In-form Sharapova beats Ivanovic

the
Brisbane
International
on
Saturday in a display
that bodes well for
her chances at the
Australian Open. It
has been seven years
since Sharapova won
her only Australian
Open title but if she
can take her form
from Brisbane to
Melbourne, a second title
does not seem out of the question. Sharapova had to work
hard to beat Ivanovic, coming

6-3 6-3 but the Serbian is a
good measuring stick.
Sharapova not only beat
Ivanovic
in
the
2008
Australian Open final but
both women are in devastating form heading towards the
first grand slam of the season, starting on Jan. 19. "I

played four good matches

against very different types
of opponents," Sharapova
said. "I couldn't have asked
for better preparation."
The Russian dropped just
nine games in getting to the
final while Ivanovic showed
nerves of steel to see off her
opponents to join Sharapova,
ranked number two in the
world. It was a match that
could have gone either way
but Sharapova proved too
strong once she got her nose

in front in the deciding third

set at the Pat Rafter Arena.
"She deserved to win the first
set, no doubt, but I hung in
there," Sharapova said.
"It was important to get
that break. I held that and
the third set came down to a
few points really." Winning
the Brisbane International
provided Sharapova with her
34th WTA career title and her
fifth in the last nine months,
a red-hot span in which she
also captured a second
French Open and a first
China Open. The 27-year-old
has won at least one title
every year since 2003, an
unbroken streak of 15 years.
For Ivanovic, who has begun
a resurgence up the world
rankings in the past year, the
pain of losing was compounded by an abdominal strain
which forced her to seek medical attention but is unlikely
to disrupt her Australian
Open campaign.

ctor Sanjay Dutt will be

back in Pune jail today
after prison authorities rejected his application seeking extension of
furlough, citing lack of
"positive" reports from
the local police station. The move came
after Dutt spent his
second day at home
yesterday after the
expiry of his 14-day
furlough due to lack
of coordination
between Pune jail
authorities and
Mumbai Police over taking a decision on his plea
for prison leave extension.
"Dutt's application seeking
extension of furlough has been
rejected and he will be surrendering in Pune's Yerwada jail later in
the day," his lawyer Rizwan
Merchant told. Mumbai Police said
they have already communicated
the jail's decision to the 55-yearold actor, convicted in the 1993
Mumbai serial blasts case. "I
received a letter from the DIG
(Prisons) office to inform Dutt that
he will have to present himself
before Yerwada Jail authorities,"
Assistant Commissioner of Police

December 2014, Julia Morley,
chairwoman of the Miss World

Kareena on magazine cover:

Why is Durga Vahini acting
like alleged 'love jihadists'?
areena
Kapoor, a
successful
actor who continues
to sign big budget
Bollywood projects
after marriage,
might have no reason to think so, but
the Durga Vahini
insists that she is a
victim of 'love
jihad'. Given that
most Indians don't
endorse the insanity that's offered as the rationale
behind the 'ghar wapsi' programme, VHP's
women's wing decided to make their message visual and give it some star power. So the look-book of
Khoon Bhari Maang was duly Googled and the
designers working on the cover of the Vahini's magazine came up with the most ridiculous image idea
ever. They decided to put Kareena's face on the
cover. Then they made a visual translation of what
'Khoon Bhari Maang' could mean and slathered the
actor's middle parting with a lot of sindoor. But
that was just one half of her face, the other half
was painted over to resemble a face covered with a
burqa - a burqa that resembles a gladiator's helmet
though. Now, 'Hindu' Kareena is smiling back at
your from the cover while poor, wife of a Muslim
man Kareena can't show off her lovely coral lip
colour. The Durga Vahini faction which came up
with the idea must have thought, "If that doesn't
scare the daylights out of Hindu women and con-

Bollywood will keep reverting to
the '80s. Directed by Amit Sharma,
a well respected ad filmmaker,
Tevar seems like it was made by the
central character from The Human

remake of an already terrible South
film. Yet again, we have a heroine
who is not only proud to play a

cinema. Yet again, we have a gunda

gunda mawali villain to whisk

Rajni Thukral,

The youth try to emulate celebrities. They think if

Firstpost, that the notion of love jihad is a shamefully misogynistic one where the woman's agency is
completely overlooked and it is suggested that they
are foolish to fall for any glib talk and convert to
another religion. Mostly, the 'love jihad' propagandists argue that women are converted to Islam
against their will and men coerce them under the
garb of love. Now, the twisted logic might hold no
relevance in a sane world, but the anti-'love jihad'
protesters can claim they are arguing against forcing one's beliefs on some hapless person and duping them. It's another thing that they mistakenly
assert that Muslim men all over India are perpetrating such crimes on Hindu women.

100 bodies found floating in

Ganga in UP, probe ordered
Lucknow

ore than 100 bodies have been found

in the river Ganges in Uttar
Pradesh, prompting the authorities
to order a probe. Reports said the bodies
were of people who were dumped in the
river or buried on the banks after their
families could not afford a proper cremation. Ganga has been badly polluted by
industrial waste, farm pesticides and
sewage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi
vowed to clean up the river after his election victory last year. Bodies were first
found floating near the banks of the river
on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district. Villagers noticed the bodies when
many had become stuck on the river bank
with dogs and vultures circling the area.
More were found a day later, and authori-

ties said so far 104 bodies had been

retrieved. "It seems that as the water level
has receded in the river, these bodies have
surfaced," Unnao district magistrate
Saumya Agarwal said. "We are trying to
figure out the reason. We have sent a team
of doctors on the spot to collect the samples
from bodies to investigate the case," he
added. Locals say bodies can regularly be
seen floating in the Ganges, but this is a
rare instance when so many bodies have
turned up in one place. Activists say the
discovery of so many rotting bodies in one
place can be a serious health hazard.
Environmentalists say the river supports
more than 400 million people, and if the
unabated pollution is not controlled, it will
be the end of communities living along the
banks.
