In India, as elsewhere in the world, scientists supporting genetically modified (GM) seed companies seem to have facilitated field trials of several food crops illegally, for over a decade.
Indias most prestigious agricultural export Basmati rice is in danger of being banned in
the European Union and other genetically modified-sensitive markets, as consignments were found
tainted with genetically modified organisms in November 2014. Experts at the UK-based GM certification firm, Cert ID, feel the contamination is intentional as the more expensive basmati was found
adulterated with cheap GM rice. Simultaneously, the European Union tightened controls on
imports of Chinese rice products after several shipments were found contaminated by GM rice,
though GM rice was never approved for cultivation in China.

Ampicillin (500 mg) and Vancomycin hydrochloride injections had failed tests due to various reasons. The department had also
launched prosecution proceedings
against the company for it in May

Diclofenac was imposed for a period of
two years from January 20, 2014, the
injections were banned from June 2013 to
June 2015. Principal Secretary (health), Alok
Shukla, said all efforts are made to ensure procurement from
quality manufacturers. He said CGMSC always checks good
manufacturing certificates issued to the manufacturer by
respective states before placing orders. "However, if one particular batch of a drug is found substandard, it does not necessarily mean that all batches would be of the same poor quality", he
added. He said Chhattisgarh on its part is constantly trying to
improve its procurement system and has now decided to place
orders with companies that have a minimum turnover of Rs 10
crore or more.

A two-day national
conclave drawing attention to chronic under
nutrition of tribal children was inaugurated at
Bhubaneswar by the
Minister of ST & SC
Development of Odisha,
Lal Bihari Himirika. The
concave has been jointly
organized by Ministry of
Tribal Affairs, UNICEF
and Govt. of Odisha. Inaugurating the conclave
Himirika said progress will remain incomplete without taking the needs and aspirations of the tribal population into account and development is not possible
with children being under nourished. He said,
Addressing under-nutrition of children of the tribes
requires continuous efforts by many Ministries and
Departments working together to deliver results. In
his address, UNICEF Representative Louis Georges
Arsenault emphasized the need to focus on the stubbornly high stunting rates among tribal children.
This meeting represents an important moment where
we can collectively commit to ensure tribal children
have equal chances to develop and grow to their full
potential. This conclave is an indication of our resolve
to make change happen, he said. This conclave brings
together frontline workers, practitioners, State and
District officials from Departments of Scheduled Caste
and Scheduled Tribe, Women and Child Development,
Health and Family Welfare, representatives from the
Tribal Research Institutes of various States as well as
the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and UNICEF.

new industrial policy for
2014-19 at a meeting chaired by CM
Raman Singh. Briefing media persons
about the cabinet decisions, Singh said
that the policy includes the provision of
subsidy worth Rs.5 crore for establishing an industrial park in the private sector. Provision of establishing 'Land

industries has also been included in the
policy, he added. Moreover, to promote
bicycle manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, electronic products, textile industries etc, these industries will be included as "priority" in the new policy. The
prescribed limit for mega project will be
reduced for these industries, so that
they may
get its benefits on lesser investment, he
said. Under the new industrial policy,
the CM Cluster Development Scheme
will be initiated, under which the state
government will provide Rs.50 lakh as
subsidy. Singh said that on the lines of
'Make in India' concept, the state will
implement 'Make in Chhattisgarh' policy under which manufacturing units of
the related industries will be promoted
with priority. The domiciles of
Chhattisgarh will be encouraged to set
up their own enterprises and they will
also be provided better employment
opportunities. Capital investment in the
state will be promoted by making industry competitive in comparison to other
