The Museum of Photographic Arts is a vibrant center for

visual learning located in Balboa Park. Its mission is to inspire,
educate and engage the broadest possible audience through the
presentation, collection, and preservation of photography, film
and video. Since its founding in 1983, the museum has endeavored consistently to address cultural, historical and social issues
through its exhibitions and educational programs.
Hendrik Kerstens: Model and Muse, Feb. 7 May 31
For more than two decades, photographer Hendrik Kerstens
found creative inspiration in photographing his daughter,
Paula. The large-scale formalized portraits of Paula explore
the intersection between painting and photography. Hendrik
Kerstens: Model and Muse presents the relationship between
artist and subject through images with ironic and purposeful
visual play.
7 Billion Others, Feb. 21 Sept. 13
The U.S. premiere of the multimedia exhibition 7 Billion Others
brings voices and compelling video portraits from more than
6,000 individuals filmed in 84 countries. Identify what separates
and unites us within interviews spoken in more than 50 languages. Four content refreshes will occur throughout the exhibition
with updated thematic content.
Seeing is Believing?
Did you know that some early photographs were known as the
mirror with a memory, or that the first photograph of the moon
was made more than 160 years ago?
Discover the answers to these questions and more in MOPAs

its impact on how we view ourselves and the world around us.
The Museum of Photographic Arts is located at 1649 El Prado,

Wade Koniakowsky, one of the nations leading ocean-inspired

artists, painting at the age of six and started surfing before he was 12.
Blending these two passions, he gained worldwide recognition for his
oil paintings of tropical landscapes. Wades work is currently showcased internationally as well as in 17 galleries from the East Coast to
Hawaii. Living in southern California, Wade has ongoing exposure to
the beaches of San Diego. His California landscapes highlight local
coastal landmarks and notable surf spots; they depict the light and
color of California and are the focus of his painting workshops.
In his early teens, Wade made his own boards, complete with
elaborate artwork. Surfboard, rather than canvas, was his early
medium of choice. Today, his surfboard art is an expression of pure
beauty and passion for the ocean. The Polynesian Art Collage is
perhaps the most popular motif for Wades board art, with depictions of the rich cultural heritage of the South Pacific Islands. No
one creates surfboard art quite like Wade Koniakowsky. Each surfboard is a custom piece.
The artists work has been featured in numerous publications
including Graphis, Art Direction, Communication Arts, and Print.
He has created artwork for the Rabbit Kekai World Long Board
Contest, Dukes Oceanfest, the Womens World Long Board Contest
and the Molokai to Oahu World Paddleboard Championships. His
paintings can be seen in movies, TV shows and international surf
competitions such as The North Shore Vans Triple Crown. Wade
has been a regular contributor of art for ROXY sponsored events.
His designs currently adorn the custom surfboards that decorate
Billabong stores nationwide. Collectors of Wades art include Super
Bowl champ Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dukes
Restaurants in California and Hawaii.
With a formal background in advertising, Wade has served as
Creative Director on campaigns for such Fortune 500 brands as
Reebok, Microsoft and IBM. His 25-year commitment to the advertising industry earned him more than 300 creative awards including recognition by the New York Art Directors Club and the Los
Angeles Advertising Club.
KoniakowskyOcean Art Gallery is located in the Solana Beach
Cedros Design District at 312 South Cedros Avenue. Call (858) 7551000 or visit www.Koniakowsky.com.

up to age 10, and focuses on these critical years of child development by encouraging families to learn together. Through professionally designed exhibit spaces and programs, children engage
in a wide range of concepts about science and world cultures.
Whether children are playing musical instruments, putting on
costumes to perform, discovering history in an archeological
dig box, learning about the amazing world of plants and insects,
or building structures out of recycled materials, they are able to
combine learning with creativity for an educational experience
all their own.

Dining, Sipping, and Drinking

California Spirits Company

North County San Diego welcomes its first modern day and only
spirits distillery, California Spirits Company. Casey Miles, Owner and
Master Distiller, has absolutely perfected and produces his small batch
rum, Avalon Silver, at his San Marcos distillery. His rum is possibly the
best Ive ever tasted. Its the real deal; and the reason is
that most rum distilleries use neutral grain spirits and add flavoring
and bottle it, calling it their own. California Spirits Company perfected
their small batch recipe by trying over fifty different combinations of
sugar, sugarcane, derivatives and various yeasts from around the world.
Avalon Silver is made at their custom distillery location with an extra
step in the process, that commercial distillers dont do; and the outcome
is a delicious, natural, sweet rum flavor with hints of banana and apple.
The extra distilling step is a process that uses heat to remove the
acetone in their custom built copper kettle (shown on our front cover).
Acetone in commercial rum is what gives you headaches. Casey Miles said
he personally has tried to induce a headache from drinking too much from

the strongest batch, but he can not. He believes that this is the process
that will prevent you from getting a headache after drinking. One more
thing about Avalon Silver is that it is different from all other rums because
it is made to be mixed with Coke. According to Casey, It wouldnt win
any taste awards if we entered it in any competitions by itself; but if
you mix it with Coke, no one will come close to the taste that we have
mastered. It is made specifically to drink with Coke. Congratulations to
California Spirits Company for making North County very proud!
You can purchase Avalon Silver at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido.
Liquor stores, bars, and drinking establishments can order wholesale
direct from the distillery in San Marcos by calling (760) 593-7581 or by
visiting www.calspirits.com.

Perfect Pairings

Proprietor, Alex Morrison, has spent most of his life in North County and
has been a wine collector for years. Fine wine, craft beers, and his interest
in food with local ingredients have led him to put the best of both worlds
together in Perfect Pairings. Chef Aaron Gentry hails from some of the finest restaurants in San Diego and uses fresh seasonal ingredients and his
specialty French techniques, combined with a simplistic approach, to allow
the ingredients shine through in each and every dish he creates. Perfect
Pairings intimate 40-seat restaurant opened in the heart of Carlsbad
Village last October and almost every seating has been a sell-out.
Their concept is to perfectly pair beverages with cuisine, which comes
from local farms that use environmentally sustainable practices. Their
menu changes every two weeks, based on availability of local produce.
Their unique concept is that they begin each menu creation with a beverage. For example they will be serving a 5-course Tablas Creek wine
dinner on February 19, at 6:30 PM. Their craft beers are from California,
wines are mostly from California, chilled teas are from Republic of Tea,
and they also serve natural sodas. According to Morrison, We taste
through the wine and beer, and create dishes that enhance and accompany the flavors and aromas of the beverage. Our most popular dining
experience involves a 4-course prix fixe menu, where our guests choose

an option from four categories on the menu and create their own
pairing dinner, with our chosen craft beer, wine or tea alongside each
course. They also feature a 6-course chefs tasting menu with pairings.
Their beer and wine lineup changes every two weeks. The 4-course meal
is $45, and the 6-course chefs tasting is $65.
Also interesting to note, the night before their menu changes,
they hold winery or brewery dinners, with one seating. A recent
winery dinner featured Justin Winery from Paso Robles and Landmark
Winery from Sonoma paired with a 5-course dinner. Karl Strauss will
have a Feb. 5 beer dinner; and Tablas Creek winery from Paso Robles
will have a Feb. 19 wine dinner. Beer dinners are typically $50-65,
and wine dinners are typically $80-95.
Perfect Pairings is located in the heart of Carlsbad Village at 300
Carlsbad Village Drive #120, 92008. For reservations or more information please call (760) 453-7974 or visit www.perfpair.com. Bon appetite! Salute!

Fifty Barrels Winery

Brian Vitek, Owner and Vintner of Fifty Barrels Winery in Vista, began
fermenting and making wine in 1999 with his college buddies in his
Carlsbad garage and thought that if they could some day reach the goal
of 50 barrels, they would be in business. Thus, 50 Barrels Winery opened
on December 13, 2013, and the rest is history. The tasting room is open
six days a week (closed on Monday) and features bar and comfortable
lounge seating. They are kid-friendly and dog-friendly.
Fifty Barrels Winery produces 12-17 varietals a year. Most of his
blends are with red grapes from Central California, Napa, Sonoma,
and Paso Robles. Many of their blends have whimsical names, such as
Ben Dover, Sweet Cheeks, Mellow Apathy, and Hind Spirit. But, dont
be fooled by the cute names; because Fifty Barrels produces some fine
wines, and one such blend that we highly recommend is their wonderfully popular 2012 Petit Sarah from Paso Robles grapes.

Join their wine club for great discounts and ask them about upcoming
events. They have one of the oldest grape stomps in San Diego at their
winery during the month of September. They also have Painting Nights
where you can paint and drink great wine with friends and neighbors.
Flights are seven wines for only $10.
Fifty Barrels Winery and Tasting Room is located at 230 Main
Street, in the heart of Vista Village. Call (760) 550-WINE or visit www.
fiftybarrels.com.

BJs Restaurant and Brewhouse

Over the years, BJs beers have received too many awards to mention
all. At the recent 2014 North American Beer Awards, Bjs received a
Gold for their Brown Porter, a Silver for their Belgian-style Witbier, and
a Silver for their German-style Hefeweizen and their German Kolsch, just
to name a few! They always have 10 of their own handcrafted beers on
tap along with other local and popular beers. Hopheads will savor their
dark and complex malts such as their PM Porter, or Tatonka Stout. Some
other delicious craft brew selections include BJs own Hop Storm IPA,
Piranha Pale Ale, and their locally popular Brewhouse Blonde.
They offer pairings with such culinary specialties as their Thai
Shrimp Lettuce Wraps or Barbeque Ribs. They have over 120 menu
items and are famous for their amazing variety of deep dish pizzas and
handcrafted burgers. Bjs chefs also like to cook with beer. We recommend their Piranha Pale Ale Chili or their Brewhouse Blonde battered
Fish n Chips. Their burgers begin with a fresh (not frozen) beef patty.
They use quality ingredients such as applewood smoked bacon, and

fresh vegetables. If youre looking for something traditional, have their

outstanding Brewhouse Burger; or you can try something different like
their Crispy Jalapeo Burger or their Black and Bleu-House Burger. They
offer a gluten-free menu and their catering services are available for any
size event or party.
Clip their FREE Pizookie Coupon from our Coupon Pages or download
from www.NorthCountySun.com.
With wide screen HD TVs and sports always on, BJs is a great place
for family gatherings or business meetings. In North County they have
two Locations: Carlsbad: 5613 Paseo Del Norte (760) 579-4440, and
Escondido: 204 E Via Rancho Parkway (760) 466-0700. Visit www.
bjsrestaurants.com.

Belching Beaver Brewery

Celebrating its third year, Belching Beaver is quickly making a name

for itself, is one of the upcoming breweries in North County to watch,
and is one of our favorites. Theyve been on the move getting their
brews in a lot of places, such as Jerrys Dogs in Carlsbad, and Solterra
Winery in Leucadia. Their brewery and tasting room is located in Vista
near Carlsbad border, and they have a tasting room in San Diego, but will
soon be opening a new brewery and tasting room in downtown Vista.
Their beer selections range from pale ale to stout. No doubt, they
have some of the best tasting stout around and stout is a great choice
during the colder spring weather. A few of our favorites are their Peanut
Butter Milk Stout, Pumpkin Spice Milk Stout and our absolute favorite,
their Beavers MilkMilk Stout. The Beavers Milk is so smooth, silky,
and creamy you can almost eat it with a spoon. Vista tasting room is
open six days a week and closed on Tuesdays.

They have an awesome outdoor patio with a fire pit and live music
on Sun, a DJ on Wed, and food trucks and caterers Wed-Sun. Upcoming
shows include: the band Fandango on Feb 8 on the outdoor patio; Steve
Orr on Feb 15 on the patio; Fandango on Feb 22 on the patio; and check
them out at the Best Coast Beer Fest on March 7 at 1 Marina Parkway
in San Diego.
Belching Beaver is located at 980 Park Center Drive, A Vista, CA
92081. Call (760) 599-5832 or visit www.belchinbeaver.com.

Wavelength Brewing Company

Welcome to North County, Vista California, Wavelength Brewing

Company! Yes, its all about the beer and even more so, all about the
brew master, in this case, the combo tag team of Hans Haas and Master
Brewer James Petti. I cant tell you how many times I walked by their
new location last summer wondering when they would open. Then on
December 20, 2014, I was surprised to see the place was packed. Their
official Grand Opening is slated for some time in February.
A couple of years ago, James Petti, Brew Master, while employed
at Karl Strauss Brewing Company, had his Heavy Petti Double IPA beer
selected as the unofficial ale of San Diego Beer Week. He also was a
Maser Brewer at Pizza Port.
Wavelength is a no frills brewery and tasting room, with a wide-open
floor space and plenty of square feet to hang out. But their beer speaks
for itself. If youre inclined to visit, you simply must try their Orange

Wheat Ale, which weighs in only at 5.8%, so you might want to try a
couple of pints. Other honorable mentions include their Cascadian Dark
Ale and their Summit Rye Double IPA. These two arent for the faint of
heart, so drinker beware, hehehe!
Wavelength Brewing Company is located right on the main drag at
236 Main Street in downtown Vista. Check them out at www.facebook.

Land and Water Co

I recently had the pleasure of getting a tour and sitting down to

a meal with Chef Robert Ruiz, who I believe has created one of the
premier dining experiences in all of San Diego. There are three special
things that converge at Land and Water Co: The historic landmark building that he has been kept meticulously and beautifully in tact including
the fireplace, open beam painted ceilings and stained glass windows
and the addition of an outdoor patio on Carlsbad Blvd (Coast Hwy
101); The expertise and creative genius of Chef Robert Ruiz; who is in
my mind one of the finest non-traditional sushi chefs in SoCal; and the
fresh garden-to-table cuisine that has flavors and textures jumping off
the plates and into new waters.
You simply must experience the chefs signature Water Roll. I lived
in Japan, love great sushi, and have never had a roll this good. Its
spicy tuna, Hass avocado, and real stone crab. It has tsume, ryu, layers
of assorted sashimi, topped with ginger, ponzu and citrus slices. Also,
please try their Bacon Lardon appetizer. Im not a big pork belly fan,
but chef makes a crispy pork belly bacon on top of Jalapeno cornbread,

with a red stone crab salad, with orange marmalade and Japanese mint.
Take the crab salad and throw it on top before you pop it in your mouth.
Heaven! Chef Ruiz said that this is his mothers favoriteChicken &
Gravy. Its enough for two and one of the tastiest chicken dishes Ive
ever eaten. Its half a Jidori chicken, with mashed potato puree, kimchi,
and savory bacon herb jus. Call me and thank me later!
Chef Ruiz grew up in Oceanside and moved to Hawaii where he
became the #1 chef at the Four Seasons on the Big Island. He also
learned under the famed Chef Ian Whittemore of the famed Kona Inn
and perfected his butchering and saut skills. He also traveled to Japan
to learn his sushi trait. There were many other famed teachers in Chef
Ruizs journey and now the student is the teacher and brings his boundless experiences and sustainability minded cuisine to the plates of Land
and Water Co guests. Itadakimasu!

Vigiluccis Gourmet Market & Catering

Its early spring and love is in the air. In Carlsbad Village on State
Street its the aroma of warm focaccia, melted Fontina cheese, and
truffle mushrooms and speck. If you havent shopped at the market yet,
you are in for a nice surprise. A name synonymous with authentic Italian
food, Vigiluccis has been a staple in North County for over 20 years. Try
their signature Panino Friuli along with an assortment of Italian sandwiches. The market offers products from many of the diverse regions
of Italy, and until now, were hard to find. One can select a nice bottle
of boutique wine as they have hard to find Italian and domestic wines
at reasonable prices. For example, a rare find bottle of Belle glos Las
Atturas Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands sells for $40.
Bring Vigiluccis home and add something new to your weekday dinner line-up. They offer fresh restaurant quality take home meals that you
can heat and serve that night. A tray of Vigiluccis Lasagna Bolognese

which serves 8-10 sells for $60 or a large single serving for $12.95 which
can be paired with a salad and shared. Try their Lobster Ravioli for two
for $20. You can enjoy them with a selection of sauces that sell separately. With a wide range of imported and domestic cheeses, salami,
fresh homemade pastas, sauces and Italian products, there is something
for everyone. Dinnertime just got more delicious!
Vigiluccis chefs offer monthly complimentary cooking demonstrations at the market using products in stock. Visit their website for
demonstrations, menus and information about upcoming events at

Pizzaiolo

Anthony De Luca is a first generation born in the U.S. from Sicilian

parents and is an expert Italian culinary chef and master pizza maker.
He is part of the famed De Luca family of Italian heritage that has been
serving San Diegans since 1984. Chef Anthony De Luca makes some of
the tastiest authentic Italian dishes in San Diego including Chicken Ziti
(shown in photo), Baked Ziti, Eggplant Permigiana, Lasagne with Italian
Sausage and Spaghetti with Meatballs.
Encinitas locals know how good his hand-tossed, stone-baked Sicilianstyle pizza really is. The pizza is made with the finest Grande cheese,
fresh locally grown vegetables, imported ingredients and baked right on
the oven shelf for the most perfect crispy crust. The quaint restaurant
was recently gutted and remodeled with new floors, counters, displays,
tables, and appliances. Many local favorites remain on the menu but the
menu has increased in size with wonderful new entrees and items.

In addition to custom gourmet pizzas, such as Anthonys Margherita,

Bianca, Pesto and Shrimp, and Barbeque Chicken, the menu offers
some amazing new choices including Calzone and Stromboli! We highly
recommend their Zitti and any of their pizzas but especially love their
fresh vegie pizza. You can also order amazing Italian Subs, Torpedos,
Capicolla and Cheese and Pastrami and Cheese sandwiches. And, yes
they still serve pizza by the slice and offer daily specials such as 2-slices
and soda for $6 or 1-slice and large soda for $4.

Save Hundreds or Maybe Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana
By Andy Lee

This is not an advertisement but

information and my endorsement of
a dentist I recently used in Tijuana.
Lets face it most of us dont have very
good dental plans and there are many
ways dentists are making additional
money from us. I personally have a
pretty good dental plan, but even so,
it doesnt cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals,
bridges, etc. Last week, I cracked the porcelain of a 15-year
old crown. It wasnt covered under my dental insurance.
I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted
between $1,100$1,500 for a new porcelain over metal
crown. One place said they could do it for less, so I drove
an hour to their La Mesa office. The doctor came in and
said it would be $1,100 if everything turned out okay once
he removed the cracked crown. I said no thanks and
drove home.

I spent some time online, and was looking at dentist

reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker,
D.D.S.. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns
for $320. I asked many questions and the English speaking
receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try, and I
am so glad I did! The next morning I drove to the border.
Parked my car at the last U.S. border parking lot and walked
across. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no
charge!) The driver, Manny, spoke perfect English. In about
5 minutes we arrived at a beautiful tall building. There was
a nice coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte.
The elevator woman opened the elevator door and used
her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened
the door of the office. It was beautiful. It looked just as nice
as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most.
I filled out 4 pages of dental history, etc. There was a
woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was
getting a root canal and that they have been coming here
for six years. They too live in San Diego. I was soon called

in. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and
were very professional. I couldnt believe how beautiful and
new the equipment and the office were. After an X-ray the
doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod
to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she
took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below
the gum line under the old crown. She said she could save
the tooth and proceeded to remove the decay, filled the
cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a
temporary crown. Ill go back in 10 days for the permanent
crown. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved
over $1,000 and had one of the best dental experiences
ever. Manny drove me back to the border (no charge, but
I gave him a $10 tip). This is why I am writing about this. I
saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is her
office number. Please let them know you read about this in
the North County Sun. Dr. Shirley Baker D.D.S. (619) 2702165. If I can be any help to you, you can reach me at info@
NorthCountySun.com. Keep smiling! Andy Lee, Publisher.

A dormant volcano, a mystical forest, an ancient
prophecy, and the adventure of Icarus begins. Deep
within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an
extraordinary world. It is a world where everything is

the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world
imbued with fantastical creatures, a young man takes
flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary.
On this day at the edge of time, in this place of pure, and
undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation of
a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the
mysteries of the world and the mind.

only if that specific buyer buys your home. Buyers broker

commission is normally 2.5 to 3 % . . . so why pay more?
Advisory #3: Beware of the Great Promise. These
agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of
their own listings, with no other agent involved . . . and
because of this, they will lower the total listing commission
from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves.
The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings!
This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings
that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in
all the sales. Are they the same offices? . . . probably not.
Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission
posted in MLS to buyers broker. While commissions are
negotiable, money motivates sales people and buyers agents
typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median
priced home . . . and they deserve it! If less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of

the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the
commissions paid to other buyer brokers . . . rarely will you
see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to
sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyers broker.
Advisory #5: Beware of agents that will match another
agents reduced commission. The question is, Do they
advertise and promote reduced commissions or are they
simply now reacting because they cannot get the 5 or 6%
listing commission from you that they were planning on
getting to list your home?
David Boe offers 30 years of broker experience selling over 1,000 homes and he personally handles all the
negotiations and all the required paperwork. For 30 years,
David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of
dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates
to buyers. You can reach David Boe at his direct line: 760846-0486 or visit www.DavidBoe.com. CalBRE#00672393.

Home Sellers Advisory

This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy
by David Boe, the owner and broker of Boe Real Estate . . .
sharing 30 years of local broker experience from selling
over 1,000 homes.
Advisory #1: Beware of the High Price listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a
signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high
list price.knowing that the seller will eventually have to
lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses
can help sellers mitigate this scenario.
Advisory #2: Beware of the Universal Phone Call that
goes something like this; Hello, I have a buyer interested
in buying your home, are you interested in selling? Truth
is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer.
If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them
to put their buyers name on a single party listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is

Alta Vista Botanical Gardens at

Brengle Terrace Park in Vista
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens was named to reflect the
wonderful view that the site offers its visitors. It harmoniously incorporates education, nature and art. While
holding true to traditional scientific approach to botanical
gardens, and providing an interactive, living classroom for
North San Diego County students, the gardens take a new
approach to creating a completely new interpretation of
what a botanical garden can become. As the gardens have
continued to be developed, plant enthusiasts have been
thrilled at the wide variety of rare, beautiful and remarkable plants that are showcased in the gardens. For everyone else in the community, there are equally compelling
reasons to come to the gardens.
Rather than taking the conventional approach of creating
just another living plant museum, the garden has become
a gathering place for the community and is both a certified
Wildlife Habitat and a Butterfly Habitat. One key attraction
of the garden is the integration of art throughout the project, giving artists a magnificent showcase to display their
talents. From garden art to sculptures, to walkways and
walls created by some of the areas most talented artisans
are on display. Along the trail systems, throughout the gar-

den, are multipurpose

platforms, which act as
way stations for visitors.
These platforms eventually will play host to a multitude of events in the garden,
such as fine art shows, culinary events, the performing arts,
as well as Tai Chi and Yoga. The goal of the garden is to leave
no stone unturned in the quest to Bring Together People,
Nature and Art.
From Route 78 take the Vista Village Drive exit and travel
North. Vista village Drive changes name to East Vista Way.
Follow to Vale Terrace Drive and turn right. Continue past
the Main Entrance and turn left at the Second Entrance
to Brengle Terrace Park. Continue past the Senior Center
and follow to the crest of the hill. Note: this road has been
recently named Jim Porter Parkway and Google shows it
in its maps but the sign as you enter the park is 50 from
Vale Terrace.Turn left at the Welcome, Alta Vista Gardens
sign and left again. Follow the road around to the Garden
House Headquarters at 1270 Vale Terrace Drive Vista, CA

vision. Sometimes we dont pay enough attention if we

Feel Great Look Great Inc. and Headquarters Salon and Wig Store a Winning Team
Cathy Ketchum, Founder and Director of Feel Great Look
Great Foundation, Inc and owner of The Headquarters Salon
and Wig Store in San Marcos, is making her life dream come
true. She owns and operates a full-service salon and wig store
and founded Feel Great Look Great, Inc. The foundation
raises desperately needed money to help chemo patients purchase quality wigs so they can feel better by looking their best
with dignity while going through and after chemo therapy.
The Headquarters, once again, voted Retailer of the Month
by Raquel Welch Wigs is one of the best places in all of San
Diego to get a wig or hairpiece, especially if you are a recovering chemo patient. Ketchum is an expert with wigs and
styling hair and her specialty is working with chemo patients.
It has been her dream to have a foundation to help patients
that need help purchasing a wig. Cathys new 501(c)(3) char-

ity foundation Feel Great Look Great, Inc does just this.
Chemo patients that need help with purchasing a wig can
apply for financial assistance and the Foundation board will
consider every application and quickly advise patients of its
decision. As far as Cathy knows, this is the first foundation
of its kind. Cathy and her foundation are just starting up, so
if you can, please make a tax-free donation to help chemo
patients look their best while going through the process.
Some patients need better quality real hair wigs that last
through washing and maintaining for two years or longer.
Experience really matters in this business. Ketchum
began working with wigs in East Lansing Michigan in 1975.
She opened her first Headquarters Salon in San Marcos on
Rancho Santa Fe Drive in 1985, and has grown her business to be a beautiful 2,700 square-foot salon and wig store

in San Marcos on North Twin Oaks Road near Hwy 78,

across the street from the US Post Office.
The wig store carries synthetic and human wigs and hairpieces by Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, and Eva Gabor and has
a private consultation room. The Headquarters will find
and fit you with the perfect wig. And because they are a fullservice salon they will custom cut your wig to perfectly fit
you, and to make it even more natural, they will also color
it to match your hair color or give it a perm. Cathy says, My
whole heart is in the chemo side of the business. I just love
my work so much. Its not about the money.
The Headquarters Salon and Wig Store is located at 405
N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd #114, San Marcos 92069. Call (760)
744-2911. Or call Feel Great Look Great, Inc for Padres
tickets, donations, or information at (888) 519-3454.

Carlsbad 5000 & Junior Carlsbad

March 28-29
The Carlsbad 5000, a signature event
of the Rock n Roll Marathon Series,
will celebrate 30 years the weekend
of March 28 29. As one of Southern
Californias finest athletic traditions,
the Carlsbad 5000 offers a flat, fast
course that sets the stage for world
record performances by elite athletes
and personal bests by thousands of
weekend warriors.
The festivities encompass the entire
weekend, beginning with the Junior
Carlsbad on Saturday of the same weekend. There, kids 12 and under are the
stars as they partake in 10 separate races
designed for specific age and fitness levels. Every child receives a medal, T-shirt, and goodie bag in
the event that is an annual highlight on family calendars.
On Sunday, the streets come alive as thousands of runners

compete in
the Carlsbad
5000. Runners and walkers alike find their
niche in the nine separate Peoples races,
divided into age and gender categories.
The run is fun but the post-race party
by the sea is even better. A well-known
tradition among the running set community, downtown Carlsbad is the place
to be on race weekend. Live music will get
the place going while runners hit the beer
garden, fill up on a plethora of food, and
browse for souvenirs in the Health and
Fitness Expo. Runners are encouraged to
stick around to experience the thrill of
the Elite Mens and Womens Invitational
races as they vie for a lucrative prize purse.

The San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park and consists
of 100 acres containing 3700 rare and endangered animals
representing more than 650 species and subspecies, and a
Botanical Garden of more than half a million plants. The
Zoo, the Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo Institute for
Conservation Research are operated by San Diego Zoo
Global, a non-profit organization founded in 1916. This
is the largest zoological membership association in the
world with more than 250,000 member households and
130,000 child members. Their stated mission is to save
species around the world by bringing together animal care
experts, animal conservationists and animal lovers with a
passion for nature.
One of the fascinating exhibits is the Childrens Zoo. It

has highly endangered African Penguins. They can be seen

swimming in their tank from the walkway. These penguins
do not require ice and snow but can survive in the warm
climate of San Diego.
Also, be sure to see the White-Monacled Cobra, a beautiful, almost white, snake with dark eyes. It can be hard to
find as it is very shy and likes to hide in the foliage. It is one
of six cobra exhibits.
Another must see is the hummingbird exhibit, a favorite at the Zoo since 1963. Watch the beautiful athletic male
birds as they jump from branch to branch while making
clicking sounds to attract the females.

Farmers Insurance Open at

Torrey Pines
February 5-8 (First Tee
Time- 8:30am)
This is the sixty-third year a PGA
tour event is being held in San Diego,
beginning with the San Diego Open in 1952. For fifty-one
straight years the Century Club of San Diego has been the
local non-profit organizing body for the tournament. This
year marks the forty-eighth time the event is being held at
Torrey Pines Golf Course, and the sixth year that Farmers
Insurance has been its main sponsor.
After overcoming a nasty bug earlier in the week and
being in a five way tie, which he broke with a 4 under-68
that put him in the lead,
Stallings took home the
win at last years tournament. Beating out
Gary Woodland, Jordan
Spieth, Pat Perez, Jason
Day, Graham DeLaet and
others, Stallings made
six birdies over the last
eleven holes and finished at 9-under 279. This
win marked the third for
Stallings, who gained two
of those wins in the tournaments Tiger Woods was
in, but Woods was not present at Torrey Pines, and fan
favorite Phil Mickelson was out of the running down the
stretch.
Tiger Woods is the master of Torrey Pines and captured
his 7th Farmers Insurance Open title two years ago to go
with his 75th win on the PGA Tour with a 14-under score
of 274 and a four-shot win over defending champion
Brendt Snedeker. Everyone in the golf world hopes that
Tiger Woods will be returning to the tournament this year
due to his many successes in the past, but his health is
questionable.
Woods became the first player in tour history to win on
the same golf course eight times. Woods has now converted 50 of 54 third-round leads and co-leads on tour. He now
only trails Sam Snead for all-time wins with 82.
Many other of the greatest names in golf have captured
the San Diego PGA Tour stop in recent years. This list
includes San Diego local Phil Mickelson (3 wins), John
Daly, Davis Love III, Jose Maria Olazabal, Mark OMeara
and Brandt Snedeker, to name a few. The 2015 Farmers
Insurance Open with feature a field of 156 players.

are available online at www.FarmersInsuranceOpen.com.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Aflutter With Butterflies

The San Diego Zoo
Safari Park is 1,800
acres located in North
San Diego County. The park houses a large array of wild
and endangered animals including species from the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America,
and Australia.
Butterfly Jungle returns in March at the San Diego Zoo
Safari Park. Once a year, the magic of butterflies sparks
wonder and imagination among visitors both young and
old at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Its a three-week
period from March to April, when guests walk among
thousands of brightly colored butterflies in a huge aviary
filled with lush green plants and flowers. Guests who come
year after year know to have their cell phones and cameras
ready to snap a shot when one of the delicate beauties
lands on their shoulder or head!
The 30 species of butterflies hail from Africa, Asia and
Central and South
America and come
with exotic names
such as zebra longwing, orange-barred
tiger and Grecian
shoemaker. Others
are more familiar
like the monarch,
giant swallowtail and

blue morpho, but this is a chance

to see them up close! Special activities are scheduled throughout the
Park during Butterfly Jungle. There
also will be butterfly-themed foods
from the Parks kitchens, such as
cupcakes, to enjoy.
The San Diego Zoo Safari Parks
5-acre Sumatran tiger habitat is
now open. The Tull Family Tiger
Trail, named in honor of Thomas
and Alba Tull, who donated $9 million for the project, is
a forested habitat offering up-close views of the tigers and
highlight conservation efforts for the species. The exhibit
includes three separate yards with rocks for climbing,
ponds for swimming, deadwood trees to use as scratching
posts, and long grasses for catnaps. Tiger Trail also has a
birthing den with an outdoor space.
The Park is currently home to five Sumatran tigers.
There are fewer than 350 Sumatran tigers in the wild,
and that number continues to drop. Scientists estimate
that this species could be extinct in its native Sumatra
by 2020 unless drastic measures are taken to protect and
preserve it.

Trails at San Diego Zoo Safari Park, call (760) 747-8702 or
