Why a FLIRTATION
with Graz can easily turn into a
long-term relationship.
Only got a couple of days to spare, but still looking to live life to
the full? Then a trip to Graz is just the thing. No other city offers
so much variety packed into such a small space, together with
that touch of sunny southern flair: futuristic architecture alongside medieval houses, alleys and squares; exclusive boutiques

treats on every corner and all within a few paces of each other.
But be warned: a brief flirtation with Graz can easily turn into
a long-term relationship. Once youve fallen for the European
Cultural Capital 2003, youll want to come back again and
again. Even if its only for another short but intense visit.

We have specially labelled the top 12 places of interest in the

BECOME ENGROSSED
IN THE CITY.
NOT IN THE MAP.
Enjoy losing yourself in the city without losing your way: a
simple stroll is full of surprises. In the historic centre, a new
discovery awaits around every corner: hidden alleys, romantic
inner courtyards, ornate faades and magnificent buildings.
This best preserved city centre in Central Europe is designated a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO, and with
good reason: Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque architecture sit

side-by-side, while just three minutes walk away lies the future:
the enigmatic friendly alien Kunsthaus has made itself at
home, nestled between the ancient houses. Local people love
the unique beauty of this beast, and already see it as the citys
second landmark.

1. The twin spiral staircase

at the Burg palace of Graz in
exemplary late-Gothic style.
2. View over the domes of
Graz Cathedral and the tiled
roofs of the Old Town.
3. The magnificent
Landhaus courtyard with its
Renaissance arcades.

Long Table of the Capital of Delights.

GRAZ
AUSTRIAS CAPITAL OF
CULINARY DELIGHTS.
The city of Graz has been nominated as Austrias official Capital
of Delights. An accolade that acknowledges the wonderful catering skills of the restaurateurs of Graz, in particular their reliance
on regional produce, and not least the fact that 800(!) urban
farmers ensure that Graz has the most frequent market days.

their delicious produce.

Equally spectacular is the glass lift inside the hill.

MILLIONS OF FIRST KISSES

HAVE HAPPENED HERE. ALTHOUGH THE VIEW
CAN BE QUITE DISTRACTING.
Sooner or later youll end up here, on the wooded hill right
in the middle of the historic city centre, and you wont be
able to get enough of the view: looking down from the Graz
Schlossberg onto the brick-red roofs of the city, its an indescribable feeling. New lovers, however, are usually less interested
than most and this has always been Grazs favourite spot for
romance. Its still well worth taking a look around: the clock

tower alone is a fascinating curiosity. The small and big hands

are swapped, causing some visitors to check their watches
in confusion. Anecdote has it that when Napoleon wanted to
blow up the clock tower, the people of Graz simply bought it
back from him Their vision ensured that one of the finest
views in Graz remains today not to mention the wide range of
gastronomy to be found up here.

11

1. One of the most romantic spots on the

Schlossberg: the Starcke-Haus restaurant.
2. The restaurants on the Schlossberg are a
favourite haunt for locals.
3. The Schlossbergbahn funicular railway: one of
three ways to get to the top.
4. A picnic on Schlossberg hill food lovers, whats
not to like?

12

DONT GO
LOOKING FOR CULTURE.
IT WILL FIND YOU.
Youve just emerged from looking at ancient knights armour
in the Zeughaus, and now suddenly youve come across a kind
of spaceship, a couple of hundred metres up the street. Dont
panic: the friendly alien Kunsthaus is not a UFO; its Grazs
international contemporary art gallery. Graz an abundance of
museums, galleries, exhibitions, architecture and design. Even

the main railway station cant help being culturally inspired:

vivid areas of colour and flamboyant textures make it a fascinating space of illusion. This variety, and a penchant for the
visionary, were indeed decisive in Graz being awarded the title
City ofDesign.

13

1. Transformed from a place of transit to a space of magic: the lobby at Graz Railway
Station designed by Peter Kogler.
2. Pure culture available at the freshly redesigned Joanneumsviertel complex in Graz.

3. The Landeszeughaus armoury of Graz

houses the worlds largest historically
evolved collection of weapons. Graz Tourist
Information is located here too.

Right at the heart of the City of Design: Kastner & hler, the beautiful fashion store with the largest
selection of fashion in Austria; more than 500 international brands spread over 6 floors!

SHOPPING
WITH CULTURE IN THE
CITY OF DESIGN.
A gentle warning: Graz is a city of alluring distractions. It could
easily happen that a new designer shades case is squeezed up
close to a bottle of pumpkin seed oil somewhere in the depths
of your shopping bag. Yet the city doesnt only dazzle as a shop
window for the latest fashion trends, shoes, watches, jewellery,
cosmetics, household goods, textiles or antiques, but also
offers many things sharing the theme of design: spectacular
architectural creations like the Kunsthaus, Mumuth, Botanical
Garden, MP09 and many others. And a very lively creative scene

ranging from art to commerce, from fashion to technology.

Graz is a UNESCO City of Design one of only 10 such cities
worldwide.

TIP: ALTSTADT TRAM

Take the Altstadt Tram and travel free of charge through the
city centre of Graz. Between Jakominiplatz and Hauptplatz
plus an additional stop in both directions.

15

1. MP09: the latest architectural highlight in Graz;

eyewear designer showroom and office building for
creative enterprises.

2. The Murinsel by Vito Acconci links the historic

centre of Graz to the Mariahilf district; its a pleasure
to run aground at the very modern Murinselcaf.
3. Graz is famous for shoes, fashion andtop design.

16

Superb dining, good music,

cool events: Graz nightlife is lively
and easy-going.
It would be such a shame not to try at least a taste of Graz
nightlife. Because at night the city really comes alive kept
young, lively and optimistic by its 40,000 students at four
universities and two technical colleges. Graz: the city is a
stage, a scene, a backdrop, a programme of events! Whether
at the classics of Graz nightlife, or the young new pubs that

are constantly arriving on the scene in the streets around the

university or on the right bank of the Mur. In the bars and pubs
surrounding the Kunsthaus youll get great drinks served with a
slice of artistic flair.

1. Graz offers numerous beautiful settings

for unforgettable moments.
2. From bar to bar on foot so much to
choose from, and all just a short step away.
3. Amongst the magnificent facades around
Hauptplatz square, the Luegghaus stands
out particularly with its stucco facade and
arcades.
4. Open-air cultural events, high above the
city: the Kasematten stage.

18

GRAZ
A CITY WITH MANY
GREEN HEARTS.
Graz has long been known as the bicycle-friendliest city in
Austria locals discovered early on that the quickest and greenest way to get around is on two wheels. So its no coincidence
that Graz is home to some of the worlds technology and market leaders in biomass, solar thermal energy, water technology
and waste recycling. Graz is also the highlight of the 360kmlong Mur bicycle path from Lungau to Bad Radkersburg. Nearby

lie south and west Styria, the Region of Delights and perfect
destinations for relaxed excursions by bike. Mountain bikers, on
the other hand, will love the fast trails surrounding Graz, which
have become an Eldorado for the sportier side of cycling.

1. Surrounding the world heritage site of Eggenberg Palace, the park

itself is well worth a visit. Be sure to visit the state rooms inside.
2. Downhill all the way
3. Not too fast or youll miss the beautiful countryside.
4. Discovering Graz by bike can be a lot of fun.
Bicycles can be rented from several central points in the city.

Far below the Schlossberg hill in Graz there is a widely-branching tunnel system. The Graz Mrchenbahn
fairy tale train for the little ones has been running in parts of the tunnel system since its creation in 1968.

GRAZ HAS GREAT MOMENTS

IN STORE FOR OUR MANY
LITTLE GUESTS TOO.
Families are particularly well looked after in Graz. With kids, the
city gets much more colourful they certainly shape the image
of many parks and tourist attractions. Despite mobile phones,
laptops and the like, listening, seeing and touching are still
very popular. In Graz, knowledge is passed on playfully, be it at
the FRida & freD childrens museum with its numerous specials, the Folk Life Museum or Natural History Museum, the Styrian Armoury or Eggenberg Palace. Actually, who wouldnt like to
know how a trick lock works? At the Hans Schell Collection this
secret is unveiled. The newly refurbished Graz Mrchenbahn

fairy tale train has been re-opened kids certainly know that visiting Rumpelstiltskinand friends isnt just a bad weather treat.
There are plenty of parks and playgrounds in Graz. Wiki Adventure Park, for instance, was listed amongst the favourites in the
Austrian A list just try it out. Indoor fun is what Haus der
Spiele, Kinderfreundehaus and the new family-friendly caf on
Tummelplatz square offer. And if summer in the city really gets
too hot, we recommend a visit to Graz Auster swimming baths
and its kiddies area.

21

1. A journey to the age of

chivalry is so very exciting. The
Styrian Armoury showcases
armour, swords and cannons
of old galore at the worlds
largest collection of Medieval
weapons.
2. FRida & freD, the Graz
childrens museum, offers
many special events and
experiences, where you can join
in too! Great exhibitions and
theatre programme.

3. It is here that secret locks are unlocked: the Schell Collection

has the worlds biggest collection of old locks, keys, caskets and
ornamental boxes.
4. The Natural History Museum in the museum quarter has been
recently re-designed, making for fascinating exhibitions.

A warm welcome is to be found within the venerable walls
of the Stift Rein monastery.

AND THERES MORE

UNMISSABLE SIGHTS
AROUND GRAZ.
You thought you had already seen all there was to see? Then just
take a look at what there is right on Grazs doorstep. Venture,
for instance, to the nearby Kesselfallklamm; you can explore
this romantic gorge comfortably with children too. Close by,
the Lurgrotte caves at Peggau are a natural spectacle in a class
of their own: special lighting effects make the huge stalactites
and stalagmites appear even stranger. And if you thought
culture was only to be found in town, you should take a look

at Stbings Austrian Open Air Museum and its 90 lovingly

restored historic farmhouses. Or else the Jakobuskirche in Thal,
an exquisite church designed by painter Prof. Ernst Fuchs. You
can even pay a visit to the oldest Cistercian monastery in the
world, Stift Rein, whose doors are open to the public.

1. Irresistible temptations await
you in the Styrian wine-growing
region.
2. The Lipizzaner stud farm at

Court Riding School of Vienna.

THE VERY SAME

WINE YOUVE JUST TASTED
IN GRAZ...
Just half an hours drive away lie the rolling hills of the
south Styrian wine-growing region, home to world-class vintages and rich in tradition. Enjoy both in one of the many
Buschenschnke to be found here, rustic taverns producing
their own wines and food such as the typical Brettljause, a
wooden platter of assorted hams, pts and salami. If you find
yourself in west Styria then you should definitely try a glass of
Schilcher, the famous dry ros produced only in this area, and

much loved by connoisseurs. Another famous regional product

of quite a different kind are the Lipizzaner horses of the Vienna
Court Riding School, which are reared in Styria and return here
to rest at the end of their careers. The ancient castles of the
region, on the other hand, are not the place for peace and quiet.
Schloss Herberstein is home to a wildlife park, while, above the
towering fortress at Riegersburg, falcons circle: tame, but no less
impressive for it.

25

3. The invading Turks never managed to

capture the majestic fortress of Riegersburg.
Nowadays its nearly always overrun by
hundreds of visitors.
4. Magnificent from afar and close up: the
romantic inner courtyards of the regions
castles.

Modern art
meets old masters:
MUSEUMS in Graz.
Modern art meets Old Masters: in Graz, its usually only a few paces to go between performances, contemporary fine art or
Medieval painting. Connoisseurs and art lovers will enjoy the wide variety of museums, exhibitions and collections from
the unique Graz Armoury, the renowned Universalmuseum Joanneum, Kunsthaus Graz, the well-known childrens museum
Frida & Fred, through to collections assembled lovingly over many decades. The public and private galleries of Graz provide
a lively platform for contemporary art.
