Ryan Van Lenning - Social Media Profile

My personal Twitter is @vanlenning. I have over 1500 followers, from mostly tweeting
about Oakland, social justice and sustainability advocacy, examples of the new and
sharing economy, local events, and the occasional Mark Twain, John Muir, and James
Brown quote.
Followers include many activists, local and national nonprofits, media, and
professionals, including Oakland Mayor Quan, Councilmember Dan Kalb, Pachamama
Alliance, Food & Water Watch, Earthjustice, Pesticide Action Network, Bioneers,
Making Contact, Maria Poblet, Post Growth Institute, Common Dreams, Alternet, Gar
Alperovitz, Tom Philpott, Pablo Solon, Phil Radford, Peers, SEIU, Union of Concerned
Scientists, Cal Watchdog, Economics of Happiness, The Progressive Magazine, Yes
Magazine, Sierra Club Magazine, Truthout, RAN, 350, May Boeve, PBS, Food First, the
Guardian Environment, Shareable. I havent yet got the Colbert Bump.
While I was Communications Coordinator at Global Footprint Network, these were the
main channels I managed: Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. I increased the Twitter &
Facebook followers and engagement significantly while I was there and started the
Google+ page. By researching and following best practices and analyzing stats/insights,
I increased our Twitter followers by over 2000 and Facebook fans by over 1000 in the
time I was there, as well as increased the monthly average of newsletter subscribers by
30%. I also wrote and shared blogs and newsletters and added share buttons to the
website.
For the Earth Overshoot Day campaign last year I hosted a TweetChat. Along with
promoting it on Twitter, I also cross-promoted it on Facebook:

That one day alone generated over 700 new Facebook fans, 350+ new Twitter
followers, and 230+ new newsletter subscribers. I have also attached a .pdf of the
media round-up I compiled after that campaign.
For Community Food and Justice Coalition I designed the website and made sure links
to social media were prominent and resurrected what had been comatose Twitter and
Facebook channels.
I have used Hootsuite, TweetDeck, SocialBro, and TweetChat as social media
management tools and Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Klout, and TweetCounter
for monitoring and feedback.
One thing I think advocates could do better is pinning on Pinterest, sharing infographics
and capturing examples of alternatives in visually and compelling ways. Examples of
non-profits I think are doing it well are Natural Resources Defense Council, WWF (in
fact, all their social media channels), ASPCA (of course, they have it easy with fluffy
cats and dogs ), and Grist.
