Answer ALL the questions
1. A 20 mm diameter bar was subjected to an axial load of 40 kN and
the charge in the diameter was 0.003822 mm. find the Poissons
ratio, youngs modulus and bulk modulus if the shear modulus of
the material is 76.923 Gpa.
(OR)
2. (i) Derive the relationship between youngs modulus. (E) and Bulk
modulus (K).
(ii) A metallic bar 250 mm x 80 mm x 30 mm is subjected to a
force of 20 kN ( tensile), 30 kN (tensile) and 15 kN (tensile) along
x, y and z directions respectively. Determine the change in the
volume of the block. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2 and poissons ratio =
0.25.
3. A 25 cm x 25 cm concrete column is reinforced with 4 numbers of
steel rods of 12 mm diameter. Determine the stresses and load
carried by steel and concrete when the column is carrying a load of
50 t. Take Es = 2.1 x 106 kg/cm2 and Ec = 0.14 x 106 kg/cm2.
(OR)
4. A composite bar made up of steel bar of 50 mm diameter and 700
mm length is followed by aluminium bar of 25 mm diameter and

350 mm length. They are placed horizontally and are fixed at both
ends. The bars are stress free at a temperature of 36C. What will
be the stresses in the bars when the temperature drops to 20C.
Take Es = 210 kN/mm2, s = 11.7 x 10-6/C and Ea =
74 kN/mm2, a = 23.4 x 10-6/C.
5. A beam of length 6 m is simply supported at the ends and carries a
uniformly distributed load of 1.5 kN/m run and three concentrated
loads of 1 kN, 2 kN and 3 kN acting at a distance of 1.5 m, 3 m
and 4.5m respectively from the left end. Draw the S.F. and B.M.
diagrams and determine the maximum bending moment.
(OR)
6. A cantilever of length 6 m carries two point loads of 2 kN and 3
kN at a distance of 1 m and 6 m from the fixed end respectively. In
addition to this the beam also carries a UDL of 1 kN/m over a
length of 2 m at a distance of 3 m from the fixed end. Draw the
S.F. and B.M. diagrams.

with 8 cm mean diameter. The spring is subjected to an axial twist
of 1100 N-cm. Calculate the bending stress and the increase in
number of coils if E = 2 x 106 kg/cm2.

of each 20 coils will be required in a buffer stop to absorb the
energy of motion during a compression 175 mm. The mean coil
