King Khaled / King Abdullah Intersection Road Upgrade Project, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Services:
Preliminary Design
Detail Design
Services period:
2014
Background:
With ever more increasing traffic congestion, the King
Khaled / King Abdullah which is one of the main intersections in the city of Riyadh, required a substantial
upgrade in infrastructure to improve the flow of traffic.
This design and construction method was chosen so
as not have further substantial negative impact on traffic congestion during construction.
The new overpass and flyover bridges are mostly constructed using the cast in place method, however some

areas required a steel deck due to larger spans and

narrower deck depths required due to vertical clearance tolerance issues.
Overpass B1: 49.2m+100m+49.2m = 198.4m total
bridge length / 10.5m deck width.
Overpass B2:
30m+35m+45.586m+45.586m+30m+30m+61m+30m+
30m+30m+30m+36.443m = 423.615m total bridge

Flyover F1:

width / 11.2m average deck width.
Existing Overpass Extension: 23.065m+23.065m =
46.129m total bridge length / Bridge has been extended from 26.6m wide to 104.7m wide.

Ramstore Arch Bridge, Astana, Kazakhstan
Services:
Specialist Bridge Consultant, Construction Engineering.
Services period:
2009-2010
Background:
The filling in of the Ishim River in Astana, Kazakhstan, for the construction of the Ramstore Bridge deck, allowed
for a simple and fast approach in constructing the deck support arch with minimal interruption to the deck construction. The Russian designed bridge consists of a four lane orthotropic steel deck of approximately 120 metre
span, supported by cables from a single skewed arch with a height of 60 metres and span of 180 metres. The
steel box arch, with a weight of 600 tons is made up 19 segments ranging from 10 to 14 metres in length and a
short segment fixed to the foundation at each end. Samko Engineering of Turkey and Byelkamit of Kazakhstan,
the steel contractors on the bridge, tasked Wiecon, a consultant from Taiwan, with providing a fast and inexpensive construction method for the archthe final two segments were positioned using a mobile crane while the arch
was held in position by the gantry. On final segment installation the arch was welded at both foundation segments. Deck construction was completed ahead of arch erection allowing stay cable works to commence immediately. Ramstore Bridge was completed at end of November 2008.

Miaoli Second Road Bridge, Taiwan.
Services
- Feasibility study
- Preliminary & detailed design
- Contractor's consultant
- Project planning
- Site supervision
- Camber control calculation
Services period
2004 - ongoing
Background
Miaoli Second Road Bridge crosses the main channel of the Houlong River and provides a fast access between
the City of Miaoli and Miaoli County.
With the close proximately of the HSR alignment it was determined that the bridge would have a landmark design; hence the unique pylon butterfly arch shape. The intent being that the pylon would give the impression of
the front end of a high speed train traveling at full speed.
The bridge is 314.5 m in overall length and 23 m in width; and comprises of the precast box beam section 3.2 m
deep for the two approach spans of 45 m and 60 m; a structural steel box section main span of 170 m and 3.2
m deep; and a 39.5 m long precast box beam section.
The 45 m high concrete butterfly arch is uniquely shaped and comprises of the single central anchor leg curving
up over the 60 m approach span, and then dividing into two back legs which span of the bridge approach.
The bridge forms a sinuously curving
structure which comprises of a cable
suspended deck close to the butterfly arch pylon; then with an underslung catenary cable and a V shaped strut
system over the 2/3 rds of the steel box span near the HSR alignment.
Problems during the design were to:
- arrive at a technical design solution
for this unconventional arch bridge
- ensure the bridge can withstand
large earthquake forces
- ensure the bridge would be stable
in typhoon conditions

Arch Bridge steel segments to form the superstructure piers, arch and
the typical deck spans of 48 m.
Services
The detailed design of the traveller equipment
used for the erection of
the bridge .
Services period
2005 - 2006
Background
The 290 km extension of the
Indian Railway network provides a
direct connection from Delhi to
Srinagar in Kashmir.

The bridge has a two rib arch;

made from large steel trusses;
while the chords are sealed steel
boxes, filled with concrete to assist
in controlling wind induced forces.

Constructing the rail network in

this isolated region involved
significant engineering challenges
including the 1,315 m long steel
arch bridge which crossed the
Chenab River.

Design services were provided for

a set of traveller equipment, used
for the erection of bridge steel
segments which form the
superstructure piers, the arch span
and the typical bridge deck spans
of 48 m.

The bridge was 359 m above the

river bed and is the highest rail
structure of its kind in the world.
Chenab Bridge is located in
Seismic Zone 5 and wind
velocities can be as high as 220
km per hour.
Chenab Bridge erection used
26,000 tons of steel and was the
largest steel arch built in India.
With a 480 m long and 130 m high
arch span it was four times the
span range of existing arch
bridges in India.

The traveller equipment used for

the erection of the steel segments
being 34 m in length and 16 m in
height.

composite launched high speed rail bridge crossing the first north south freeway near Taichung.
The composite launched bridge was part of the
Design Unit DU 11.01.
The launched concept was proposed as an alternative for the tender design as it allowed for fast
track construction without significant interruptions
to the traffic flow on the Second Freeway.
The composite concept called for an erection
method of launching the U shaped steel trough
and then finally casting a concrete deck slab on
top using a movable form traveller.
Services were provided to determine the method
of erection and for the design of the movable form
traveller
to cast the HSR concrete deck slab.

Services
- Feasibility study
- Preliminary design
- Detailed design

Services period : 2001 - 2003
Background
Service were provided for the
design and erection of 3 of the HSR
Warren truss bridges; just south of
Taichung Station. The 3 bridges
were for the main line rail south and
north bound and the branch line to
Wurih Depot. The parallel bridges
cross the North
- South Freeway, the Fazi River and
Provincial Highway #1.
Each bridge comprised of two
parallel trusses joined by cross
beams; and were fabricated from
welded steel box sections; and then

assembled using over 600,000 high

strength bolts.
Each bridge consisting of 3
continuous spans 150 + 120 + 140
m; 441 m long, and the weight for all
three bridges was 24,000 tons.
To avoid any road traffic
disturbances,
a sophisticated erection scheme
was devised to preassemble the
first two bridge spans; on
temporary supports in the center;
and launch this bridge to the south
abutment using a 108 m long
launching nose beam.
Then this bridge was moved
sideways into its final position on
the west side. The erection
procedure was repeated for the
next bridge truss, which was
launched and then moved into its
final position on the east side.
The third truss was then erected
and launched between the two
previously erected bridges. A
concrete slab was cast for the track
deck after checking the final level
and alignment of each of the three
bridges.
The steel truss bridge design called

for a rigorous investigation into the

dynamic behaviour of these
bridges;
to limit the vertical acceleration,
cant and end rotation.
A rolling stock analysis was carried
out on the bridge structural
elements; and mechanical shear
keys added to each bridge to resist
the horizontal seismic forces.
Two pot bearings (per span per
truss); the largest ever to be
manufactured; now support the
three bridges.
A series of shock transmitting units
were installed to ensure the uniform
distribution of the longitudinal
seismic forces among the
supporting piers.
