6 Salisbury Winter Sports Association 2015

Dedication: John Harney

Memories of John Harney
By Elyse Harney,
Elyse Harney Morris,
George Kiefer,
and Mathias Kiefer
John passed away this past
summer. He was a great member
of our entire community, including SWSA. He will be a hard act to
follow.
Soon after John and his wife
Elyse arrived in Salisbury in the
mid-1960s with their children,
they got involved in Salisbury
Winter Sports Association. They
both "jumped" in. As innkeepers,
they knew how to put on events.
They helped with every event and
we all had a great time.
During his tenure at the White
Hart Inn, John invited SWSA to
have all their social events there.
Every winter, John helped make
the SWSA Snow Ball a very popular event. Larry Stone and his band provided the music.
Some of us remember John crowning the first Snow Ball
queen, Gail Miner.
The Harney family joined up with the other SWSA
families: Sherwood, Phelps, Clark, Kiefer, Whitbeck, Erickson, Patterson, Miner, Alexander, Bond, Burcroff, Stone,
Berg, Laverty, Pollock, Aitken, Rosseter. There were a lot
of kids maybe 30 some jumpers, some XC racers,
and just a lot of fun! In order to travel to races and carry
all the kids there were three VW buses and two station
wagons.
All five of Johns children raced: John, Michael, Keith,
Elyse, and Pauland John was there helping, cheering,

and supplying refreshments at the end of every
junior cross country ski race. After every race
or jump competition, a room at the Inn was
opened for an awards ceremony with refreshments.
Several weekends over the winter, the junior
ski team would travel to other ski meets in New
York, Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine.
The junior team would return to Salisbury late
Sunday afternoon and John and Elyse made
sure that they could eat at the White Hart Inn's
Sunday night buffet.
John was the announcer at our ski jumps
from the mid-1970s to the end of the 1980s.
He started out announcing out of a station
wagon (owned
by the Inn's
baker) at the end
of the outrun.
He was also the
announcer for
the ski jumps at the 1980
Olympics in Lake Placid
where he was invited as part
of a select small group of
SWSA volunteers.
In the 1960s, the 1970s
and into the 1980's, it was
common to have enough
snow every winter to have
cross country races on
Selleck Hill. John and Elyse
were there helping every
time. One of the most
popular races was The

SWSA was there to prepare the course and help with the
timing. The race had two parts: a classic 10 kilometer race
followed by an obstacle/costume race. Great fun was had
by all.
Every winter, John and Elyse opened their house to
provide beds to a few out-of-town jump competitors.
They have done this for over 40 years, for jumpers old and
young, from New England, Austria or elsewhere.
For John, no task was too large, no task was too small
and there was never a problem. If you had a problem, ask
John. A solution was found. John was a lot of fun. He
was always happy.
SWSA and the community lost a great friend and supporter in John Harney. We will miss you.

Salisbury Winter Sports Association 2015 9

Remembrances
Don West

By Larry Stone
In September of 2014, SWSA and Eastern Ski jumping lost a good friend and long-time jumping enthusiast.
Don West was a frequent visitor to Salisbury and regularly officiated in one capacity or another at our annual
Jumpfest weekend. He arrived in the east in the 1960s
with his friendly demeanor. He soon befriended eastern
jumpers and started jumping at every jumping facility in
the division. His passionate devotion to the sport of ski
jumping brought him in contact with many generations
of Nordic skiers. He was a fixture at Salisbury for over
45 years. His later years saw him as the spokesman for
Masters Ski Jumping. He went to many, if not all, Masters Championships in the U.S. and traveled to many
International Masters events in Europe.
In December, Jeff Hastings paid tribute to Don in his
USA Ski Jumping Story Project. His article sums up
what many of us felt about Don. It is reprinted here in
the SWSA program at an event that Don truly loved to be
a part of: the Salisbury Ski Jumping weekend, Jumpfest.
I remember. I first met him, fittingly, at the top of a
ski jump. Specifically, the old Olympic hill in Lake Placid
(K76?). I was 15 at the time and had never been off a big
hill. Id been dragged to Lake Placid with my family to
watch my younger brother, Brad, compete on the 40m in
the J3 (U14) Eastern junior championships. It was a bluebird day and after the competition Brad and a couple of the
other top finishers were invited to try the Olympic jump. I
had packed my equipment for just such an opportunity and
joined them at the base of the hill where I was immediately
un-selected by a Pompous Local Official. I was already
nervous about jumping so big a hill and, while humiliated,
was ready to put my skis back in the car. Long/short my

father intervened and begrudgingly the PLO let me head

up- what little confidence I had initially carried, completely
evaporated.
In retrospect, I imagine Don had seen the whole thing
play out and by chance was waiting for us when we
arrived nervously at the top. It was 1974, five years post
Woodstock, but hippies still a thing. Was Don a hippie?
Who knew, but with his beard, long hair, and mellow presence he was clearly the coolest cat any of us had ever encountered, and the perfect sage. He delivered a subtle mix
of instruction and confidence, then told us that hed wait
for us at the bottom and to have a good one. I will always
feel blessed to have been so wondrously indoctrinated to the
big hills.
Don traveled many paths and was many things to
many people in the ski jumping world; his death this
past August was an enormous loss to the community. He
loved anything that brought ski jumpers together which
by default meant I could count on him for a story or two
every year.
Don was an avid ski jump enthusiast, supporter,
Webmaster, and inspiration to many who have passed
through the community. Whatever role a person played
at a ski jumping event as jumper, judge, or volunteer,
Don was a positive presence throughout. Many will miss
his dedication, inspiration and love of the sport and its
people.

Earle Murphy
By Willie Hallihan

Earle Murphy passed away on August 15, 2014 at

the age of 87. He was an avid supporter, participant
and promoter of ski jumping. His passion was ski
jumping, and he competed worldwide until he was 76.
Although his name was not widely known in these
parts, his contributions as a jumper, student of the
weathers effects on ski jumpers and life-long supporter of the sport added much to eastern ski jumping. In
1990, Earle and fellow Master Jumper Guttorm Blakke
of Norway established the IMC (International Master
Championships). In 1991, he was inducted into the
Master Ski Jumping Hall of Fame. Over the years, he
hosted ski jumpers from around the world at his lodge
in Lake Placid, NY.
He brought a passion and inspiration to others. He
will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched.

Junior Jumping
By Mark Breen
Since walking down Indian Cave Road and crossing the little creek into Salisbury's Satre Hill jumping arena in 2006, I have seen a lot of progress at the
jumping facility. The old wooden tower on the big hill
has been taken down and reconstructed as a modern
steel tower with a highly attractive profile, and the
small hills have received a lot of attention with an eye
toward increased capacity and being able to operate
day and night over a longer season. In 2011, Salisbury
hosted a very successful Junior National Championships and in the very near future will again be the
host.
One thing missing in recent years, soon to be rectified with the aforementioned improvements, is the
participation of a native Salisbury-trained youngster
on the big hill during the annual Salisbury Jumpfest
weekend-- a first step toward competing at a Junior
National championship. As a regular competitor at
Jumpfest, and a former Junior National competitor
myself, I have an idea of what it takes to get there.
This is why I volunteer, as a coach, during the annual
SWSA Jump Camp and for the SWSA Ski Jumping
and Nordic Combined team.
Ski Jumping is a unique sporting spectacle that
affords the dedicated participant an eye-opening
expansion of their world. How can you not personally
benefit from the esteem building that jumping over
the length of a football field, landing, and skiing away,
all without a parachute, provides? But it takes an
intrepid and adventurous character to take on what,
to the casual observer, is a daunting feat.
Every winter I work with youngsters, ages five and
up, at the annual Christmas camp and I am always
glad to see young veterans of previous camps, as well
as new faces who come to experience jumping for
the first time. I am always amazed at the myriad of
tactics needed to achieve a good and successful camp
for all. Any large group of youngsters runs the gamut
of ability and personalities. I have to quickly switch
gears from skiing technique advice, to emotional and
philosophical support, to equipment technician, to a
comedic clown depending on the face that greets me
next in line on the jump stairs. I keep a stick handy to
scrape snow off tiny boots to make it easier to fasten
bindings and, at the same time, I keep a sharp eye out
for the snowball that invariably comes my way from
the peanut gallery. Regardless of the challenges, it
is always a pleasure to give young boys and girls the
opportunity to experience jumping in the hopes that
it will capture their imaginations and spark a lifelong
interest in the sport.
To take a fun camp and catapult it into a Junior
National Championship or beyond, these children
must have the maturity to take instruction, work
hard, and apply what is learned; they must have the
desire to set themselves apart from others. With these
qualities, and the stepping stone a club like SWSA
provides, endless possibilities open. Jumping can
easily lead to regional, national, and even world travel
exposing one to unique cultures, languages, and geographies. These are some of the things I experienced
with a local jumping program that I never would have
experienced playing baseball or football.
At Salisbury, SWSA is doing the utmost to see that
the facilities and the training environment are in place
to facilitate a local youngsters desire to chase a Junior
National championship. And one thing I forgot to
mention -- ski jumping is one of those sports that can
see talent explode almost overnight. With Salisbury
hosting a Junior National Championship in just one
short year...Salisbury's home-grown national championship winner may be climbing to the top of our
junior training hills today.

Learning to Ski Jump

in Salisbury
Ski Jumping at Satre Hill in Salisbury begins on the
small hills. The 20 and 30 M jumps allow young skiers
to learn the balance, core strength and mechanics of ski
jumping. Through practice, perseverance and courage the
jumpers progress through various size hills. Their progress
includes competing at other sites in New England moving
from SWSAs smallest hill through larger hills until they
are ready for the 65 M in Salisbury. This 65M hill is the
size that is used for the Junior National Championships.
In the Olympics, the hill sizes are larger, set at 90M and
120M.

I have no proof that Rube Goldberg, the

famous cartoonist and inventor of fiendishly
complex solutions to common problems, was
ever a director of the Salisbury Winter Sports
Association, or that he ever even visited Salisbury.
However, there is no question that he inspired
the process SWSA follows to put snow on the
jump tower prior to competitions. There can be
no other explanation. No sane person could have
invented the process.
No doubt many have wondered how sufficient
snow gets on the in-run of the ski jump. After
many years of investigating, I am willing to offer a
description of the process. Rube would be proud.
First, SWSA makes snow, because relying
on Mother Nature is not a good strategy these
days. SWSA has invested heavily in snowmaking
equipment, which basically forces water through
a fine nozzle at high pressure into the air, where
it (hopefully) freezes and falls as snow. A secret
fraternity of SWSA volunteers have learned this
alchemy and practice it as soon as the weather
turns cold enough.
A decade ago, the fraternity had to hold regular
all-night meetings at Satre Hill, as the equipment
was unreliable and prone to failure. There is a
story of a giant fan blade breaking off and cartwheeling across the out-run, with the operators
fortunately able to dive out of the way. However,
the new guns are much safer and can run unattended for hours. The snow guns are pointed
straight up, so the snow falls in huge piles on the
outrun. It can take several weeks to accumulate
sufficient snow.
On the appointed day, typically the Tuesday
before the competition, the fraternity of snowmakers steps aside, and a new team of volunteers
appear. I am still not sure how word gets out,
probably by ESP, but the volunteers show up in
the early evening. These workers represent a crosssection of Salisbury and the surrounding towns.
We have doctors and laborers, Ivy League graduates and high school dropouts, all with one goal:
Snow the tower! (yup, snow is a verb)
I am tempted to report that the volunteers are
all men, but frankly, with everyone buried under
Carhartts, face masks and wool hats, it is hard to
tell.
SWSA borrows a small bucket loader that
moves the snow. Eventually loading the snow into
a four-wheel-drive dump truck that hauls the
snow up a narrow dirt road toward the base of the
tower, where the snow is dumped into a new pile.
A tractor with a smaller bucket brings the snow
to the base of the jump, whereupon the process of
snowing the tower really begins.
Six to eight men armed with shovels feed the
snow as fast as they can into a cornblower: the
device that runs off a tractor and normally sends
corn up into a silo. The cornblower fires the snow
some 60 feet straight up a metal pipe to the top of
the tower. Keeping the pipe and blower from clogging is an art a heavy wrench on a long rope is
often dropped down to clear the pipe.
At the top, a jury-rigged plastic pipe directs the
snow in the direction of the in-run. Snow pours
out the pipe, and slides down plastic sheeting
about 100 feet to the takeoff. The scene reminds
me of a frozen waterfall, with clouds of ice pellets
(I mean, snow) covering everyone and everything.
Another team of men use rakes and shovels to
pack the snow, slowly working their way up the
in-run. In addition to the usual Carharrt uniform,
these guys wear ski goggles or other devices that
permit them to see in the blowing snow. Between
the noise of the cornblower and the generator

used to make electricity for lighting, and all

the snow, conversation is impossible. Communication is by grunting and pointing.
The goal is to pack the snow about six
inches deep all the way up. The process typically takes 20-30 guys about 6 hours of hard
work. The camaraderie in the Byrd House
at the base of the hill, while we enjoy a late
supper and try to thaw, is priceless. SWSA is
hugely indebted to the volunteers who come
out to help.
Although we intend to continue to honor
Rube Goldbergs inspiration in designing the
system to snow the tower, suggestions for
improvement are certainly welcome.

The Junior Nationals Are Coming In 2016

By Willie Hallihan
The Junior Nationals, formerly known as the Junior
Olympics, is an annual event where the countrys best junior jumpers and Nordic combiners (a combination of ski
jumping and cross country racing) showcase their talents.
The event is open to jumpers, age 14-19, who are able to
jump competitively on a 60-70 meter hill and who have
competed in specific qualifying tournaments.
The Eastern U.S. Ski Jumping Championships held
on Sunday of Jumpfest weekend in Salisbury is the final
qualifying tournament of the season for Eastern jumpers.
The Eastern Junior National Team is named at the end of
the Jumpfest weekend.
Five ski jumping divisions in different regions of the
United States take turns hosting the four-day tournament
on a rotating basis. At the event, Junior National teams
representing the Northeast, Central, Rocky Mountain,
Intermountain, Alaska and Pacific Northwest compete to
determine the best Junior Jumper and Nordic Combined
athletes in the nation. The Junior National event rotates to
five sites for the competition: Steamboat Springs, CO, Park
City, UT, Minneapolis, MN, Anchorage, AK, and Salisbury,
CT. Next year, 2016 will once again be Salisburys turn to
represent the Eastern Division and host the Junior Nationals. This event will be important both economically and
prestige-wise for SWSA and the Tri State area.
To be able to hold the Junior Nationals in Salisbury in
2011, SWSA Directors took a leap of faith and mounted
a $750,000 capital fundraising campaign to build a new
state-of-the-art 70-meter tower, a requirement to host the
Junior Nationals. Thanks to the generosity of the entire
Salisbury community and beyond, the fundraising effort
was successful, the ambitious construction schedule was
met, and SWSA hosted a highly successful Junior Nation-

als. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA),

which is the national governing body of Olympic skiing
and snowboarding, recognized SWSA with its highest rating for an event.
Again in 2016, SWSA will partner with Mohawk
Mountain in Cornwall to host the Junior Nationals. Ski
jumping events will be held at Satre Hill in Salisbury and
all cross-country racing events will be held at Mohawk.
There will be much activity surrounding the hosting of
the athletes, their families and coaches for five days in
2016. Our communities work hard to welcome and embrace the entirety of events for Junior Nationals.

The Junior Nationals are a natural stepping-stone

towards the Olympics. Although it is too early to tell
who will attend the 2016 event, or who the frontrunners
will be, without a doubt there will be future Olympians
jumping in next years Junior Nationals. Last years United
States Olympians Nicholas Fairall, Nick Alexander and
Peter Frenette are all Junior National winners as well as
frequent jumpers in past Jumpfest competitions here in
Salisbury. So watch closely! The 2016 Eastern Division
Junior National Team will be announced at the end of this
years Jumpfest weekend and you may be seeing the next
Olympic contenders.

February 2015
Who: The most accomplished athletes from
the Northeast Corner of our Jumping Community
ranging from youth to master categories.
What: Ski jumping scored for distance and style
on the 20, 30 and Olympic-grade 65 meter hills.
Competitors hurtle down the in-run at speeds of
up to 50 mph and then soar through the air 200 feet
and more and come to a stop within hand-shaking
distance of the spectators. Come meet the next
generation of Olympians!
When: Jumpfest takes place February 6-8, 2015.
Friday night features Target Jumping, rewarding accuracy and skill. Saturday hosts Nordic
Kids jumping on the smaller hills starting at 9:00
am; followed by the Salisbury Invitational on the
world-class ski-jump at 1:00 pm. Sunday is the
final qualifying event for the Eastern Junior National team and the U.S. Eastern Championships.
Where: Satre Hill is located in Salisbury, Connecticut, a picturesque New England village in the
northwest corner of the state. Salisbury is only 1

are available. Children 12 and under enter free.
Ski jumping is an ideal spectator sport for young

cowbell to cheer on the competitors, snack at the
Cook Shack, warm up by the bonfire, and be part of
the action!

Judges Tower to Melee

By Jean Saliter
Looking at the ski jumps from the spectator area there is
a building to the right of the landing hill. This is the judges
tower, where a group of official people make or break the
rise and fall of a ski jumper. Style points are awarded for
the form of the jumper gliding through the air and landing
technique. These numbers, combined with the distance of
the jump make the total score for each jump in competition. The windows of the judges tower are staggered like
steps to run parallel to the landing hill. Stony faces with
piercing eyes scrutinize every jump from helmet to ski tail.
There is no heat in the tower. No sun gets through to warm
feet and hands. Perhaps the frigid conditions over long
hours add to the disposition of the men and women who
occupy the slope-side building. For years, I have climbed
the stairs on the other side of the landing hill photographing the jumps along the way. Voyeuristically, I zoomed in on
the judges across the way and snapped a few faces: scowls
and frowns, some serious side conversations around the
corner
In the past, I stayed on the measurers side of the hill. I
found safety behind the smiling faces of Salisburys finest
volunteers, basking in the western sunshine. Shooting into
the light is not ideal for a photographer, but the risk/reward
ratio of going to the cold grey tower was disproportionate.
Until 2014, the year everything flip-flopped. Snippets of
conversations were heard.

What number was that?
That was Miles.
I thought it was a three and a three.

ON THE HILL!
Skis sing off the ice of the jump and a blur of purple

and white flies through the air overhead. The crowd below
cheers over the din of cowbells, the jumpers skis clap down
to earth between the red and blue banners.
YEP, YEP, YEP! Judge One is getting impatient waiting for the measurers decision. Above, from the windows,
Judge Three is getting impatient for post-jumping events
at the Interlaken Inn. Below the deck I can hear children
playing King of the Mountain. I peer through the glass
into darkness where Kathy struggles to ring out the last few

drops of used-to-be-warm cocoa. Behind her, a volunteer is

hunkered over a pile of scraps of paper. He scribbles with a
giant #2 pencil. Cicily is in another corner with a different
official staring into computer screens. Cricket is screaming
at the measurers. I look at Joe and he beams a big smile at
me. Markers and measurers smile across the landing hill
soaking in the sun, while the voices of judges and calculators meld into a melee from whence comes the winning
scores.

Swap in December, to support downhill and cross-country

ski programs at local elementary schools including North
Canaan, Salisbury, Falls Village and Webutuck, benefiting
as many as 200 skiers with financial aid and equipment
annually.
SWSA maintains cross-country ski trails on Selleck Hill
for the benefit of members.
SWSA hosts a number of events throughout the year:
golf, brewski, ski and skate swap, jump camp, jumping
practices, and Jumpfest . In addition, all through the year
there is upkeep of the facilities. In the winter, the jumping
hills are used for beginning jumpers. The hills must be
maintained and snowed. Snowing the hill means packing
with skis and/or boots, shoveling and raking. Each time
it snows the hills need to be repacked. As always, a helping
hand at any of our programs is appreciated.
If you are interested in becoming involved and keeping

This is a weekend to show off your survival skills

as Northeastern Warriors, not your passion for fashion. Jumpfest can be filled with February sunshine
but the fluctuating climate in this corner of Connecticut can be less than a thrill if you catch a chill. Here
are some tips to keeping your fingers and toes toasty:
The bonfire crackles all day but it is best not to
stagger through the crowd in your stiletto high-heeled
shoes. You will be standing on snow. A fleece coat or
jacket that repels water, a wool sweater, your warmest
boots, comfortable socks, and a layer of sweat-wicking long underwear, are recommended options for
staying warm all day. Forget the velvet cape and the
frilly fringe. Make sure your accessories include hats,
scarves, and mittens.
Did you forget something? Our local sport-savvy
Peter Becks Store will be on site selling hand-warmers, hats, gloves, scarves and the new line of Salisbury
Winter Sport Association Apparel! A portion of every
purchase will be contributed to SWSA programs for
kids. A larger selection of cozy comfort clothing will
be available a few meters away at the store, 19 Main
St, Salisbury, CT, 06068. Phone: (860) 596-4217.
www.peterbecks.com.
Parking is free but the short walk to the event is
usually over solid snow pack. Light and simple slip on
traction devices (like Yak Trax, Grip Lites or Ice Trekkers) make it easy to stay grounded.
The bleacher space is filled with friendly faces
but sometimes very crowded. A light lawn chair or
camping stool is a great way to settle in and judge the
jumpers.
Cowbells traditionally serve as the encouraging
background sound for every leaping competitor. You
can purchase one ahead of time but they are also
available on site in fun bright colors to match your
mood. Each one you purchase helps support the
entire eastern ski jumping division.
At the base of the jumps a traditional ski hut
transforms into a snack shack for beverages and
warm meals.
To observe the jumpers soaring overhead sunglasses or goggles are recommended.
Snow reflects the suns ultraviolet rays. Sunscreen
is as important on the snow as it is in the sand.
Pets are like family, but it is best for everyone
involved to leave them at home.
Shake hands with future Olympians but be mindful to stay behind the bails of hay that serve as boundaries for the Jumpers on the outrun.
Please check www.jumpfest.org or the Salisbury
Winter Sports Facebook page for weather delays or
cancellations. Our snowmaking capacity is top notch
but high winds or rain might altar the plan.

Facilities Upgrade 2015

By Willie Hallihan
Who says you cant buy time? Like everyone, we at
SWSA never seem to have enough of it. We are always
searching for ways to stretch it in all areas of our operations, especially when it comes to our junior jumpers.
You see, we make a promise to our young athletes
every year at our Junior Jump Camp that if they enjoy
their experience and they are motivated to continue
jumping, we will provide the instruction, facilities
and, yes, time for them to hone their skills as long as
the snow lasts.
To better hold up our end of the bargain, this fall,
SWSA Directors and volunteers spent a lot of time
and money improving our 20 and 30 meter hills. Over
400 feet of 6 inch steel pipe was laid in a trench that
ran from the bottom of the hill up between, and to
the top of, the two junior jumps. A massive pump has
been installed at the hills base. These improvements
will allow volunteers to make snow from above rather
than accumulating it below and carrying it upward.
This new efficiency will save many man- and womanhours of labor, and enable us to more quickly cover
the junior hills with snow.
Please read Ken Barkers Letter from the President
where he thanks some of the generous folks who
helped us.
Another improvement in the works is lighting. This
time of year, the days are just too short. By the time
kids get out of school, gather their equipment and get
over to Satre Hill, its almost dark. So most training
ends up only on weekends. Before this jumping season
is over, SWSA volunteers will have erected six poles to

shed light on both junior hills, allowing the

kids to extend their training time well after
dark. And not for nothing, night jumping
is just plain cool! With the new lighting,
practices will run with an open hill and
coaching Monday and Thursday evenings
from 6:30-8:30PM and Saturday 1-3PM.
Add to the upgrade mix a new set of
stairs and a major tree-clearing project, and
SWSAs junior jumpers are good to go-bringing them one jump-at-a-time closer
to the Junior Nationals.
SWSAs mission is to teach area youngsters how to ski in all its forms and to
maintain the facilities necessary to do so.

Scoring Ski Jumping

A jumpers scores are based on a combination of style
and distance. Ski jumping is about how far you can fly-
not height or acrobatics.

STYLE
Style is based on two components: flight in air and
landing. While an athlete is in the air the judges look for

a stable body, fully stretched legs and how well the athlete
capitalizes on wind conditions.
An athletes landing is judged on a smooth transition
from flight to landing position. The landing position is
called a telemark. A proper telemark landing should have
a straightened upper body, bent knees, split legs, feet apart

with hands out when first gliding on the snow. Five judges
score the athletes, with the lowest and highest scores
thrown out.
Judges start with a perfect score of 20 and deduct
points for flaws in landing or flight.

DISTANCE
An athletes jump is measured in distance and converted to points. An athlete receives 60 points if they reach the
K point. The K point refers to the section of the landing
hill where it starts to flatten out and is usually marked by
a red line. This indicates the hill size, for instance the K
point here on the large steel jump is 65. A jump to the K
point is worth 60 points; each meter over or under that
distance increases or decreases the score.

COMPETITION

MATTHEW R. CARBRAY, CFP

Certified Financial Planner
Managing Partner

Traditional competitions follow a two-round format.

Usually the second round is run in the order of lowest
first-round score to highest, meaning the leading jumpers
jump last in the final round.

The athletes of SWSAs Jumpfest Winter Festival

have been getting big air for nearly ninety years.
Lime Rock Park has been seeing big air for a long time, too.
Today, both the track and the Salisbury Winter Sports Association are
inextricably woven into the fabric of our community. Everyone at Lime Rock
extends their heartiest congratulations and wishes of continued success to SWSA.
