system subjected to a harmonic base excitation for the following data:

PART B (5 16 = 80 marks)

A machine of mass 80kg is mounted on springs of stiffness 1100 N/mm


and damper with damping factor of 0.12. A piston within the machine
has a mass of 2kg and a stroke length of 70 mm. The speed of the
machine is 3000 rpm. Assuming the motion of the piston to be simple
harmonic, determine
(i)

The amplitude of vibration

(ii)

The transmissibility and the force transmitted to the foundation

(iii) The phase angle of the transmitted force with respect to the
exciting force.
(i)

Given the equation of motion of a damped system, F(t) = 2x + 24x


+ 98x determine the response for an impulse force F(t) = 5 with
x(0) = 0 and x(0) by Laplace transform.

A vibrometer is used to measure the vibration of an engine whose


operating speed range is from 500 to 2000 rpm. The vibration
consists of two harmonics. The amplitude distortion must be less
than 2 percent. Find the natural frequency of the vibrometer if

The damping ratio is 0.6.

Write a note on spectrum analysis.
