Eng in Biochemical-Biotechnology
Engineering
This programme is designed to develop students with entrepreneurial values, creative,
innovative and able to solve problems in the biotechnology engineering area.

Programme Description
As a novel interdisciplinary programme, the Biochemical and Biotechnology Engineering
programme is composed of various disciplines including chemical engineering, genetic
engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, and molecular biology.
Biochemical and Biotechnology Engineering blends knowledge in:

Engineering Science (mass and heat transfer, fluid control, material properties, kinetics and reaction engineering,
process control, systems modelling, commercial, regulatory, safety, reliability issues)
Process (metabolic pathways, industrial manufacturing, protein purification, fermentation, design, economics)
Biology (small chemical molecules, proteins and biochemistry, microbiology, supra-molecule assemblies, genetics,
whole cells, tissues and organisms)
Systems (individual cells, enzyme systems, genetic modifications, whole processing plants)

History
Written by Dr. Nassereldeen Ahmed Kabashi | 26 April 2010
The Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology Engineering program offered in the
Department of Biotechnology Engineering was approved by the Educational Planning
Committee at its 129th meeting held on 28 September 1995.A total of eleven students
graduated in August 2004 as the first batch of graduates. However the programme took off
formally in 2000. Based on the recommendations in the Engineer Accreditation Council
(EAC) under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) in the pre-accreditation report in 2003
as well as the local and international external examiners visitation report, the name of the
programme was changed to Biochemical Engineering-Biotechnology. A total of eleven
students graduated in August 2004 as the first batch of graduates.
The programme is a offered presently is a comprehensive multidisciplinary four (4) year
Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Biochemical Engineering (Biotechnology) which is
oriented towards current and future trends in biotechnology and process biotechnology. The
skills and knowledge acquired includes the useful manipulation of biological organisms and
their sub-cellular components for the development of techniques or products for industrial,
medical and environmental applications. The courses are dedicated to promote training in a
series of enabling technologies drawn from various fields including microbiology, cell and
molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, fermentation and bioprocess technology,
bioinformatics, environmental science and engineering which allow one to synthesize,

breakdown or transform biomaterials to suit human needs.

The
curricula of this programme are designed to produce students with entrepreneurial skills,
creative, innovative and able to solve problems oriented to biotechnology engineering areas
such as bioprocess engineering, bio-molecular engineering, and environmental biotechnology
engineering. The programme has components in management/entrepreneurship, and Islamic
Revealed Knowledge in addition to the core and technical requirements in Biochemical
Engineering (Biotechnology). The goal is to make IIUM engineering graduates competent in
managing technology with very high consideration to ethics, and moral values in the practice
of their profession as engineers. The programme is accredited by the Institution of Engineers
Malaysia (IEM) and graduates can register to practice as professional engineers in the field of
biochemical engineering. Graduates from this programme have job opportunities in
Manufacturing: construction, operation, and maintenance of production plants for
biopharmaceuticals, biologics, food and animal feed production, agrochemicals e.g. biocides,
bio-fertilizers, fine chemicals, bio-sensors and bioinstrumentation etc. Utility and Service
Industries such as water treatment companies, environmental management, petroleum
processing etc, Consulting: :Planning, design construction and maintenance of engineering
systems in biochemical, bioprocess and bioenvironmental projects, Government : Department
of Environmental (DOE), Biotechnology Directorate, Biovalley Project, JKR etc. Research
Institutes and universities etc. as well as in international agencies.
