Introducing the Achieve Guide to

Running Booster Classes
Tough targets make for a tough life. We know only too well that teachers have
enough to worry about let alone the National Tests. This Achieve Guide to
Running Booster Classes has been designed to give you all the information and
ideas you will need to run successful booster classes in English and
Mathematics and to make the whole revision process as easy and as
manageable as possible for you.
All the pages in this guide are photocopiable. The planning sheets, letter,
register, timetables can all be copied and adapted as required, but may be
used without modification if you choose.

How to use this book

Dear Parents/Carers,
As you are aware, all Year 6 children will be taking the Key Stage 2
National Tests in May. As part of our preparation for these tests, we have
organised booster lessons to give the children extra practice and tuition
in English and Mathematics.

You can use the letter we have provided to gain

permission from parents and carers for children to spend
time at lunch or after school for the booster classes.
Sending this letter home will also help parents and carers
understand the importance of booster classes and the
National Tests.

Here is the timetable for these booster lessons, which start on [

Use the revision schemes of work to plan your

booster classes. They are designed to cover a 12week period and are separate schemes of work for
level 4 and level 5. We have suggested the sections
of the Achieve Revision and Achieve Practice
Questions books that you could use each week.
Annotate those and add your own resources too.

Step-by-step guide to running

booster classes
Now follow the guide on pages 67 to help you
plan your booster class programme.

Step-by-step guide to running

booster classes
1
Discuss with your Year 6 pupils what is going to happen with regard to testing at
school during the coming weeks.
Points to mention might include:
The National tests in May are a chance to show what they can do.

It is important to prepare properly so that they will be able to do their best.

Give an idea of the 'timetable of events'.

The school will be helping them as much as possible.

100% attendance between now and the tests would be an advantage.

The build-up to the tests and the tests themselves will be good practice for their
secondary school careers.

Give a motivational talk about goals and how they can achieve them.

Tell them you will be running extra classes after school everyone is invited!

2
Inform the rest of the staff as soon as possible. Raise the subject of booster lessons at
the next staff meeting. Ask which members of staff would like to help run the classes
(with the possibility of remuneration if this has been agreed with the head teacher).

3
Timetable the booster classes. Highlight the available evenings or lunchtimes that
booster classes could be held. (Think about staff meetings, other extra-curricular
activities, Friday afternoons, premises issues etc.)

4
Finalise the planning. Decide on a date to start, who will run which classes,
how much they will be paid and when (if they are to be paid), the method of
pupil reward for attendance and where the lessons can be held.

5
Inform the parents/carers. Fill in the example letter (page 8) with the correct
times and dates (or write your own letter), photocopy it for each Year 6 child
and send it home as soon as possible.

6
Gather together the necessary resources: pens, pencils, maths equipment,
books/folders to write in etc. Decide how you will use the Achieve books. The
suggested revision schemes of work on pages 12 to 15 will help you to plan this.

7
Draw up a register (page 9) from the returned permission to attend forms.

8
Start the booster classes with the Revision Timetable lesson (page 1011).

9
Initiate the reward scheme during the first class (page 18). Encourage children to
use the Key objectives tick sheets (pages 1617) to record progress and
highlight areas that need further work.

10
Hold an assembly, soon after the first booster class, to praise the commitment
and work ethic of the Year 6 pupils. If needed, you could try to generate a real
feel-good factor around the school an opportunity to celebrate effort and
achievement!
At the end of the booster class programme, congratulate all pupils for taking
part in the classes and give them their Booster Class Attendance certificate
(page 19).

Booster class reward sheet

Introduction

Attendance is crucial to the success of your booster classes. The initial

enthusiasm among the pupils may be high, but maintaining that enthusiasm
can be difficult, especially when the classes are after school.

To keep up the attendance levels, a good reward system will prove

invalauable. Each school has its own tried and tested methods of
encouragement but here is another idea you might find useful.

Name/Week

10

11

List the pupil names in the left-hand column. For each booster class they
attend, award them a sticker or a star (just like any other reward system).

However! If you can achieve a 90% or better attendance rate for the full
course of booster lessons, then fax or email a copy of the register and you
will be entered into the Rising Stars HALL OF FAME!
All schools that do this will have a chance to win some fabulous prizes for
their school AND individual awards of gift vouchers for their pupils.
