PART-II

SELF ANALYSIS OF THE INSTITUTION

1. PREFACE
2. CRITERION WISE REPORT
3. SUMMARY

SELF ANALYSIS OF THE INSTITUTION

PREFACE
Evolution:
Thirty seven years ago, a small lamp of knowledge was lit, to be exact, on
August 21, 1969 to inaugurate the college, named after the memory of Late Sri
Velagapudi Ramakrishna , the pioneer industrialist of Andhra who gave away 28.74
acres of land and buildings therein for the location of the college at Nagaram in Repalle
taluk of Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. The founding of this college was an act of
faith as the college was started in a remote and sleepy village of hardly a thousand
thatched houses. The impulse behind it is the great principle that every human
being has an inalienable right to develop the full faculties of his personality through
education.
The College is affiliated to Andhra University .
It is recognized by
University Grants Commission under section 2F and 12B since 1971. This college
presently offers 7 under graduate programmes and 2 post graduate programmes in
the faculty of Arts, science and commerce. There are 55 teachers, out of which 3 hold
Ph.D., degrees and 7 M.Phil. The total number of non-teaching staff in the college is
56.
The number of students for U.G. and P.G. grant-in-aid and self financing
programmes is 1152. The unit cost of education is Rs11,294/-.
including the salary component
for aided programmes and Rs10,252/-. for unaided
programmes . The unit cost excluding the salary component is Rs.497/- The college
follows Annual system of education for U.G. courses and semester system for P.G.
courses.
Thirty seven years ago, our college consisted of a few humble class rooms,
laboratories, a small library, an office and a Principals room. The college had grown
from strength to strength under the loving care and liberal monetary help by Smt.
Rajeswary Ramakrishnan, daughter of Late Sri V.Ramakrishna. Today, the College
consists of a main building, sophisticated laboratories and class rooms, a beautiful
library , Computer Centre, administrative block, staff rooms, Gym and indoor stadium,
seminar hall, open Air theratre, non-resident center, waiting rooms for girls and boys,
guest house, cycle shed, hostels for boys and girls and residential quarters for staff in
the midst of gardens and green foliage.
Over the years we are happy that our institution has acquired a name for
good teaching, discipline and much more away, an outlook and values integral to liberal
academic institution.
We sincerely believe that a college is not mere text teaching,
examination oriented institution.
It is the nursery, for the future citizens of the
society and country. Also, our college is in the heart of rural area.
For the lost three
and half decades, it had educated thousands of disciplined and well trained students.
They are found all over the state as Doctors, Engineers, Teachers, Industrialists and
also considerable number in foreign countries. Our college has been and is an
engine of development in these backward, poor and rural parts. Our college has put
Nagaram, a forgotton and sleepy village on the academic map of Andhra Pradesh.
We organized students union with student office bearers. These office bearers
were
selected
on the basis of their
performance in the preceeding university
examinations. So effective was this device that from 1969 till today, elections were
not held in our college and more important thing was that students never asked for
the elections. We have created the essential conditions for peaceful and disciplined
functioning of the college by abolishing the elections. This is the Best practice of our
college since its inception in 1969.
Our college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1994 on a grand scale,
rededicating itself to the founders vision and its dynamic mission of the propagation
of higher education in an atmosphere of punctuality, discipline and orderliness.

Evaluation:

Till recent years any evaluation of the institution academic or administrative was
only through examination results. The real need to assess the strength and weakness of
the college in an objective manner never arose, because development all through the years
in the college was both consistent and continuous. Due to globalization, liberalization
and industrialization, emphasis on quality has become the keynote of every walk of life
and every area of knowledge in the 21 st century. So there is need for drastic and
qualitative changes in all aspects of education so as to enable teachers and students
to face the challenges of a dynamic world.
Under these circumstances, we wanted to undertake the evaluation i.e., self
assessment and analysis, primarily to make a candid recording of our own
capabilities for further growth both quantitative and qualitative.
Incidentally the
methodology and the format of self study laid down by NAAC has created a lot of
enthusiasm among the staff members as well as management of our college.
Also periodical self study and assessment is an important necessity, as we felt that
recognition by NAAC and UGC is expected to enhance the prestige of the college
and add to the self esteem and respect of all who are involved in the teaching,
learning and administration of the college.
Preparation of the Report:
The Self Analysis Report has been prepared on the basis of data-procured from
all the departments and various academic and curricular and co-curricular committees
functioning in the college. A Committee was constituted with the Principal Dr. V.K.
Mohan as the Chariman. Eight committees were formed for preparing the profile of
the college and criterion-wise inputs. Departmental committees were also formed
and the Heads of the Departments are in-charge of those committees engaged in
preparing and submitting the necessary details from the departments. The committee
conducted sessions with both teaching staff and non-teaching staff in several meetings
attended by the Secretary Sri ADL Prasad, Correspondent, Sri V. Subba Rao and the
Principal Dr. V.K. Mohan.
Dr. V.K.Mohan, Principal of the College has been entrusted with the task of
editing, amending and improving the text of the report during several progressive
phases of its composition and in its final form.
The department of Economics and
Computers made an extensive survey among the senior students of the college and
provided an illustrated graphic presentation of the collected data about several
facilities.
A steering committee consisting of the President, Secretary, the Correspondent
and the Principal was formed to review the progress from time to time and to give
their suggestions and instructions whenever necessary. Thus a united effort has
been made in the preparation of the self study report.

S.V.R.M.College has the rare privilege of interacting with great personalities

from various walks of life since its inception. Right from Sri V.V.Giri, President of India
to almost all the Vice-Chancellors of most of the Universities, it is a wonderful interaction
of wisdom and guidance through various facets of life.
The college has fond
memories of the lectures, the Seminars and many other opportunities of interaction
with great people of repute from diverse fields like science, technology, literature,
fine arts, etc.
Plans have been outlined for future infrastructure development such as
construction of Examination Hall, Womens hostel, Cycle shed for girls and some more
class rooms for teaching. There are also plans to further improvement of curricular
and other facilities required for all the sections of the people of south coastal Guntur
district.
In this modern age of rigorous competition, the question remains about the
modernization of programmes, identification of emerging areas of demand as well
as interest, rehabilitization of absolute programmes and strengthening of already
existing courses. For this, a thorough professional guidance from an experienced
National body like NAAC is required.
