CollectionEvaluationandDevelopmentPlan

DescriptionoftheSite,FacultyTeaming,andStudentDemographics
AliceCoachmanElementarySchoolwasnamedforAliceCoachman,anativeof
AlbanyandthefirstblackwomantowinanOlympicgoldmedal.Theschoolopenedits
doorsonAugust23,1999,withastrongcommitmenttoaqualityeducationforallofits
students.Theschool'smissionistoprovideanopportunityforstudentstolearnina
safe,structured,orderlyenvironmentwithstrongemphasisonafirmfoundationof
knowledge,highacademicachievement,andavarietyofeducationalexperiencesthat
willleadtopersonalsuccess.
AliceCoachmanElementaryisaTitleIschoolintheDoughertyCountySchool
SysteminAlbany,Georgia.Itserves302studentsingradesK5.94%ofthestudent
populationisblackand6%iswhite.9%ofstudentsreceivespecialeducationservices
and1%isnotproficientinEnglish.81%ofthestudentsatAliceCoachmanreceive
free/reducedlunch.TheschoolcurrentlymeetsAYPstatus.
Thefacultyandstaffiscomprisedof24fulltimeteachersand4parttime.27of
theseteachersarefemale.19teachersareblackandninearewhite.Thepersonnel,
onaverage,has15yearsexperiencewith12havingtheirmastersdegree,andsix
havingtheirsixyearspecialist.Therearethreeschoolsupportpersonnelandtwo

administrators.
Thetopicareaofmycollectionplanisfourthgrade.Therearethreefourthgrade
teachers,oneparaprofessionaland52studentsinfourthgrade.Freeandreduced
percentagesaswellasdemographicsinthefourthgradecorrespondtotheoverall
schoolpercentages.ThemedianreadinglevelforARis3.0.84%of4thgrade
studentspassedCRCTstatetests.Fourthgradeisdepartmentalizedwithstudents
switchingteachersforsubjectspecificinstruction.Socialstudies,scienceandmathare
rotatedsubjects.

Themethodsandtechniquesusedinthisevaluationwereboth
collectioncenteredandusercentered.Themediacenterislocatedatthefrontofthe
schooldirectlyacrossfromtheentryandschooloffice.TheTitleWiseanalysisshows
thatthecollectionholds15,105items.Thisamountsto50itemsperstudentwhichisa
goodsizecollection.Belowisabreakdownofthecollectionbysection.Thelargest
sectionisGeneralFiction.

determinetheaverageageofthecollection1999.Theitemsinthiscollectionareon

ExaminingtheCollectionDirectlyExaminingthecollectiondirectlycanbetricky
asmostpurchasesinthelibraryaredrivenbyARtestingwhichaffectsthelibrariesset
upandflow.AllbooksareshelvedaccordingtotheARreadinglevel.ARmaterialsare
atthefrontofthelibrary,withothermaterialsattheback.NonARmaterialsare
availablebutmanystudentsdonottypicallyventuretothosestacks.Thereisacolor
codedsystemthatmoststudentsfollowwhentryingtolocateabook.Manyoftheitems
formytopicwereamongthosesortedbyARlevelbutsomewereshelvedonthelast
shelvesinthenonAR/nonfictionsection.Inthe970s,booksrelatedtothecurriculum

topicwerelocated.ThetitlesincludedPioneerLife,WestwardExpansion,andHowthe
USGrew.OthertitlesinthissectionrelatedtoNativeAmericansincludedNative
AmericansandChildrenoftheTrailWest.Fourvideoswerelocatedaswellinrelation
tothestandards.Allofthematerialslocatedwereingoodconditionwithcopyrightsin
theearly2000s.
CatalogSearchAPowersearchonDestinyproducedaresourcelistforthe
topicWestwardExpansion.16titlesweresuggested.Twoofthesetitleswere
eBooksbothhadanageof2009.OnebookabouttheTranscontinentalRailroad
publishedin2009aswellwaslocatedinthe300s.Onefictiontitlewasreturnedfrom
thesearchTheJournalofAugustusPelletierwhichwaspublishedin2000.Four
videoswerelocatedinthesearchthreefrom2004andonefrom2009.Theremaining
eighttitleswereallbooksinthe900s.Allmaterialslocatedmetthestandardsand
curriculumtopic,however,itdoesshowaneedformorematerialsforsuchabroad
subject.

Circulation/InLibraryUseThecirculationforthelibraryoverthepastyearwas
6,525itemsthisincludesbothcheckoutsandinlibraryuse.Onaverage,725items
areinuseeachmonth.Thecirculationwaspulledforthe900s,wherethemajorityof
thematerialsonthetopicarelocated.Itshowedthatwithinthepast45days,50titles
havebeencirculatedwith105separatecirculations.Themajorityofthetitleschecked
outwerebiographies.Mostofthebookscirculatedseemedtobeaboutfamousblack
AmericansandweremostlikelyforBlackHistoryMonth.


MaterialsandBudget
InordertocreateamaterialsorderforthetopicofWestwardExpansion,four
vendorswereusedDurabound,Booklist,BoundtoStayBooks,andTitlewave(Follett).
Therecommendedorderincludes193itemsandtotals$3858.93.Thisdoesnotinclude
processingcosts.173oftheitemsarebooksbothFictionandNonFiction.The
NonFictionisprimarilymadeofabooksinthe900s.Otherformatsincluded:three
materialscategorizedasaudiotwoitemsconsideredteachermaterialstwofilmsthree
referencematerialsfiveeBooksandoneinteractiveprogramwasrecommendedfor
purchase.Multiculturalitemsarehighlightedtostandoutfromtheothertitlesinthe
liststhereare49titlesinthiscategory.Whenpossible,bookswereverifiedtobeAR
andthemajorityhavetestsavailable,althoughforthisproject,ARtestswerenotadded
tothetotal.Inordertoensurealllearnerswouldhavematerialsattheirabilitylevel,
searchesforbooksonthevendorsitesrangedfrom2ndgradeto7thgrade.The
majorityofthetitlesarefor24thgradereadinglevels.
