Josie Fingerless Mitts

by Jamie Roe

These quick and simple fingerless mitts make a great gift for a tween or teen. The simple
4 stitch seeded rib stitch patterning creates a snug fit with an interesting texture. This is a
great project for on the go or while relaxing at home while watching television.

Instructions are also included for making larger mitts for a woman.

Please read the pattern completely before beginning.

Size 2 (2.75mm) double pointed needles
200 yards of Red Heart Heart and Sole or other fingering weight yarn. The pictured mitts
were made with less than one ball of Red Heart, Heart and Sole in colorway Rustica.

8 stitches per inch worked in stockinette.

Begin patterning:
Round 1: K2, P1, K1 repeat to end.
Round 2: K3, P1 repeat to end

· rnd2 Knit
· rnd1 · Purl
Work rounds
one and two until it measures 5.25” from the cast on edge.

Thumb for both sizes:

Using waste yarn knit 8 stitches from N1. Slip the stitches from the right needle back to
N1. Using working yarn continue working in pattern beginning with stitches worked on
waste yarn on N1. Work in pattern for another 1.5” or 6.75” from the cast on edge. Cast
off loosely.
To work the thumb you will use 2 dpns to pick up 8 stitches on the row above and below
the waste yarn stitches. To pick up the stitches you will insert the tip of the dpn into the
right side of the stitch (if looking at the stitch you will see a V, insert needle to the right
of the stitch picking up the right half of the V). Pick up 8 stitches in this manner on the
row above and below the waste yarn. Using another dpn “unzip” or undo the waste yarn
stitches and set the waste yarn aside to use for the next mitt. This will leave you with 8
stitches on each needle and an opening into the mitt. Work as follows:
Round 1: Beginning on the bottom needle using the working yarn (leave a few inches of
tail to use later) K1, P1 to the end (this will be N1), with N2 in the gap between the top
needle and N1 pick up and work 4 stitches as follows K1, P1, K1, P1, then using the
same needle K1, P1, K1, P1 from the top needle, using another dpn, N3, K1, P1, K1, P1
over the remaining stitches on the top needle, then pick up and work 4 stitches in the gap
as K1, P1, K1, P1 this will leave you with 8stitches on each needle.

Rounds 2-12: K1, P1 repeat to end.

Bind off loosely, weave in ends. Use the tail on the thumb to secure any holes that may
have been created between mitt and thumb. Repeat the entire pattern for 2nd mitt.
