MATHS ACTIVITY FOR CLASS III

ACTIVITY NO 1.

TITLE:-To understand the meaning of one half, one third and one fourth of
a whole .
OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the fraction as a whole.
MATERIAL REQUIRED: Frame of Circle, Blocks of shapes of two
semicircles, three sectors & four quarters of circles.
Pre-Requisite Knowledge:- Knowledge of shapes of circles, semicircle,
quarters etc.
Concept of equality
Concept of Division
Preparation for Activity: -Assemble the required Materials for the Activity
on a table .
Demonstration:For one half :
First of all show the frame of a circle to all the students.
Put the semi-circular blocks into the frame of the circle .This
Arrangement is representing the whole part as two halves make

a whole .
Now remove one semi-circle from the above above arrangement &
show the children that we use taking one out of the two halves so one
block of circle is representing one half (1/2) of the circle.
For one Third:
Again , put all the three thirds sectors circle into the frame of circle. We
are showing that three thirds of circle completes the whole part.
Remove one block by explaining one out of the three parts of circle is
representing one third of circle.
Remove one block by explaining one out of the three parts of circle is
representing one-third of circle.
Similar procedure id done for for quarter.
Conclusion: With the help of blocks, the skills for thinking, skills for comparing, skill of
Games can be developed among the students.

MATHS ACTIVITY FOR CLASS III

ACTIVITY NO 2.

TITLE:-To understand the meaning of one fourth, two fourth and three
fourth of a collection.
OBJECTIVES:To demonstrate the fractional number as a part of collection
MATERIAL REQUIRED:
Marbles or Beads or ice-cream slices.
Tray or Basket
Pre-Requisite Knowledge: Concept of equality
Concept of Division in to equal parts.
Preparation for Activity: -Prepare the collection of 20 marbles in different
trays for different students.
Demonstration: Firstly count the marbles & divide the collection of 20 marbles into four
equal groups of 5 marbles in a tray .
Remove on group of marble from the tray .
We will show the students that one group of collection is removed from
four groups i.e. one out of four is returned or one fourth of collection is
removed .

Thus each group is representing the one-fourth of collection .

Remove second group of marbles from the tray.
We have removed two groups out of the four these . two fourths is
removed .
Similarly, demonstration is given for three- fourths & four fourths of
collection of marbles.

Skill Developed : Skill of Observation

Numerical Skill
Skill of Comparison
Skill of Thinking .

MATHS ACTIVITY FOR CLASS III

ACTIVITY NO 3.

TITLE:-Addition of three digit number ( with grouping )

OBJECTIVES: To find the sum of three digit numbers.
Pre-Acquired Knowledge :1. Concept of Addition
2. Concept of Place Value of three digits.
3. Relation of ones and tens, ten and hundreds.
4. Concepts of addition.
Material Required :1. A wooden or plastic or thermocol block with three holes at equal
distance.
2. Three plastic or wooden sticks.
3. Small Circles of different colours.
Preparation for the Activity :
1.Takle the block (Wooden , Plastic, Thermacol )
and fix three sticks in it .
2.Make a label of one , ten and hundreds.
DEMONSTRATION:
1. Take three different colours of circles red for ones, green for tens and
yellow for hundreds.
We know that

10 ones= 1 Ten
10 Tens=1 Hundreds
2. Let us add : 284 + 169
3. Firstly let us take the number 284.It has 2 hundreds, 8 tens and 4 ones .So
we will find two yellow circles in hundred sticks ,8 green circles in ( ten
stick) and 4 red circles in ( one s stick) Fig( i )
4. Take second number i.e 169 . It has 1 hundreds , 6 tens, and 9 ones. So
here we will fix 1 yellow circle in hundreds sticks, 6 green circles in the
tens sticks and 9 red circles in one stick. Fig( ii )
5. Now count the number of circles in one sticks. It has 4+9 =13 red
circles.
6. We remove 10 red circles from one stick and instead add one green
circle in tens stick
10 red circles = 1 green circles

Fig (iii)

7.Now count the number of circles in tens stick 1+8+6=15 green circles.
8.Remove 10 green circles from tens sticks and instead place one yellow
circle in hundreds stick.
Ten green circles= 1 yellow circle

ACTIVITY NO 4.

TITLE: SUBTRACTION TWO DIGIT NUMBERS INVOLVING WORD PROBLEM.

OBJECTIVE:
To subtract two digit numbers by background counting.
To understand the word problem.
Pre-acquired Knowledge:
Concept of counting numbers.
Concept of background counting
Concept of subtraction
Material Required
Card board/ Thermocol
White Sheet/Florescent Sheet
A ruler
Colored pens
Plastic pegs / Human figures
Plastic caps. / Paper caps / paper Unabrellas
Preparation for the Activity:
Paste white sheet / florescent paper on card board /Thermocol sheet.
Make 10 X 10 grid.
Write number from 1 to 100 in the squares.

Demonstration: Word Problem

1. There are 48 men in all .25 of them are with caps. How many are without
caps.
2. Put 48 pegs (representing a human figure), one in each square from 1 to
48.
3. Put caps on 25 pegs counting backward from the square marked 48.
4. Now find out the pegs without caps
5. Thus 48-25=23
6. Thus the number of persons without caps are 23.
