2. Assignment - Decision Making for Hospitality and Tourism Managers

Task 1
Learning Outcome 1 and 4
Assessment Criteria: 1.1, 1.2, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4
Weighting 80%
Written Report: 3,500 words maximum
Scenario
Students are required to develop a research proposal in report format of maximum
3,500 words for the Palm Trees Boutique Hotel focussing on specified areas of
technology.
The Palm Trees Boutique Hotel is a premium hotel located in the Maldives. It has
followed the concept of combining sea, sand and sun for its operations since its launch
five years ago.
Due to its reputation for excellent customer service, beautifully landscaped tropical
gardens and the promise of a perfect stay for its guests, Palm Trees Boutique Hotel has
become a major tourist destination.
One of the major drawbacks of the hotel is not having a strong online presence or an
online reservation system to attract more international guests and corporate clients. It is
also noted that competitors use management information systems for decision making
which is not in use here.
The management is considering the adoption of new technological developments to
solve the issues facing the hotel and as marketing manager you are required to develop
a research proposal. The research report you produce is to recommend strategies the
hotel should use to resolve the problem of lack of use of technology.
Outline
The research proposal should include the following details;
Research problem
Rationale for the research
Research objectives
Research questions
Primary and secondary research methods (the chosen research techniques
should be justified by evaluating them in terms of the advantages and
disadvantages, appropriateness to the research problem, effectiveness etc.)

Sampling methods
Qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
How to analyse collected data/research findings
Conclusions and recommendations
The research proposal should address the following areas of technology;
Use of Management Information Systems to support decision making
Use of online reservation systems
Launching an official website for the hotel with interactive features
Online marketing activities e.g. presence in social networks, direct mail
campaigns
Each area mentioned above should include analysis, justification and should be
relevant to the research problem. Any research undertaken should be appended to this
assignment.
All theories, concepts, models and industry examples must be appropriately referenced
using the Harvard System style.

10

Task 2
Learning Outcome 2 and 3

Students are required to explain the different financial and non-financial decision
making models that can be used to analyse the investment decision related to the
problem of lack of use of technology by Palm Trees Boutique Hotel. NB: calculations
and supporting figures are not needed for this question
Outline
The following areas should be addressed in writing the answer;
Financial decision making models;
o Appropriate investment appraisal techniques
o Appropriate management accounting techniques like break even analysis,
budgets, variance and ratios
The selected models should be justified by showing appropriateness,
advantages and disadvantages.
Non-financial decision making models;
o Identify appropriate models and justify the selection by pointing out the
suitability, advantages and disadvantages.
As task 2 constitutes 20% of the assessment for this unit, a brief explanation with the
