Students are required to develop a strategic plan for the next five years for a hospitality
or tourism organisation of their choice.
Students are advised to use a maximum of 10 pages for environmental analysis, which
must be included as an appendix.
It is important to follow an integrated approach and show how different organisational
functions work together to achieve the strategy.
Outline
Students should include a brief introduction to the chosen organisation which includes
the size, customers, products and services offered, history, achievements and future
plans. It should be noted that secondary research related to the chosen organisation is
sufficient in order to complete this assignment.
The following provides an outline of the structure of the report that can be used by the
candidates as a guideline;
Analyse the internal and external environment including a SWOT analysis to
judge the current position of the organisation
Identify the critical success factors and strategic industry factors
Recognise internal and external stakeholders that should be considered in
developing the strategic plan
Identify a vision statement, mission statement and the corporate objectives
(which should have SMART characteristics)
Develop functional and operational objectives for different departments including
marketing, production, HR and finance. (Note that these objectives should be
integrated)
Specify the strategic planning method adopted e.g. top down or bottom up
Develop product development strategies, suitable growth strategies for the next
five years, and suitable competitive strategies for the time period included in the
study

evaluate the above areas.
The secondary research undertaken should be appended to this assignment.

Students are required to explain the different financial and non-financial decision
making models that can be used to analyse the investment decision related to the
problem of lack of use of technology by Palm Trees Boutique Hotel. NB: calculations
and supporting figures are not needed for this question
Outline
The following areas should be addressed in writing the answer;
Financial decision making models;
o Appropriate investment appraisal techniques
o Appropriate management accounting techniques like break even analysis,
budgets, variance and ratios
The selected models should be justified by showing appropriateness,
advantages and disadvantages.
Non-financial decision making models;
o Identify appropriate models and justify the selection by pointing out the
suitability, advantages and disadvantages.
As task 2 constitutes 20% of the assessment for this unit, a brief explanation with the
correct justification is sufficient for this task.

Written Report: 2,500 words maximum
Students are required to prepare a 2,500 word report on issues related to developing
eco and nature tourist for a selected tourism destination.
Outline
Students should include a brief introduction to the chosen tourist destination in terms of
history, current tourist attraction points, nature of customers, size of the market etc. It
should be noted that secondary research related to the chosen destination is sufficient
in order to complete this assignment.
As part of their analysis students should evaluate the impact of the issues identified on
different aspects of the business like; the future growth opportunities, tourist attraction,
financial stability and employees. The following areas should be analysed in the report;
Issues related to planning e.g. mismanagement of resources
Environmental concerns
Fund availability
Employee attraction and retention
Awareness amongst tourists
Political and economic factors
Students should use appropriate theories, models and concepts to analyse and
evaluate the above issues. Students should make brief recommendations as to how the
identified issues can be dealt with. All recommendations should be justified based on
the analysis they have carried out.

Outline
Technology plays an important role in increasing the quality and effectiveness of the
service industry. Using a hospitality related organisation of choice students are
required to critically evaluate how technology is used to increase the quality of its
operations in their presentation. The same organisation selected for task 1 or a new
organisation can be selected for the completion of this task. The selected organisation
should enable students to conduct primary and/or secondary research on the
presentation topic.
As part of the presentation you are required to analyse the positive and negative
impacts of technology, and how it is used to increase the quality of hospitality
operations. The main areas to be covered include;
Current trends in the hospitality industry; trends can be recognised through
research articles, publications and competitor evaluations.
The identification and evaluation of different areas technology is being used in the
selected organisation;

Rooms management
o
Food and beverage
o
Operations
The identification and evaluation of the technological processes/tools/equipment
used in the above identified areas.
The identification and evaluation of how technology increases quality and
effectiveness of services (e.g. evaluate how technology can be used to reduce
service quality gaps)
The presentation should also carry well justified recommendations supporting the
analysis.
The students presentation should address the above assessment criteria and students
should ensure that they demonstrate that they have achieved the outcomes stated.

Students are required to produce a 3,000 word report that critically evaluates a recent
event of their choice related to the hospitality or tourism industry.
Outline
Students should include a brief introduction to the event they are researching in terms
of the purpose, size, participants, services, activities etc. It is envisaged that students
will only need to carry out secondary research into their chosen organisation in order to
complete this assignment.
As part of their analysis candidates should evaluate the following:
Size, nature and structure of the event applicable to the various types of event
Complexities of event management which includes issues faced and risks
involved in terms of aspects such as staffing, regulatory impacts, reputation, and
dynamic nature of the business environment
Identify and evaluate the event management process that describes in detail
activities related to pre, real time and post event situations
Students should use appropriate theories, models and concepts to analyse and
evaluate the above areas.
Students should then recommend strategies that can be adopted by the selected
organisation to increase the effectiveness of their event management practices. All
recommendations should be justified drawing on the analysis they have carried out.
