I am designing a steel Rigid frame in STAAD pro. Please let me know how to perform P-DELTA
analysis in STAAD pro.
(syntax of command will be helpfull)
Regards,
Santosh.

Hi,
There are many types of analysis possible in STAAD like P-Delta, linear elastic, non-linear elastic,
response spectrum, push over, steady state etc. I want to know what analysis to use under what
condition. Is there any guidance that I can get on this?
Thanks
Siva

Please note STAAD help menu explain the procedure to carry out P Delta analysis. However the steps and syntax are
presented in this post. There are much more on this. Please refer STAAD help menu. This presentation in in a nutshell.
Steps involved:
Step 1:
Primary deflections are calculated on the basis provided external loading input.
Step 2:
Combination of primary deflections with the originally applied loading to form the
input to secondary loadings.

Step 3:
Based on revised load vector new stiffness analysis is carried out to generate new
deflections.
Step 4:
New deflections are used to calculate Element/Member forces and support reactions.
For refined analysis appropriate iteration can be carried out.
Syntax in STAAD
2) Small Delta
STAAD performs P-Delta Analysis for first order linear analysis and obtains a set of joint
forces from member based on the large P-Delta effect. A second analysis is then performed on
this updated load vector for 5 to 10 iterations.
In case of P-Delta with KGAnalysis, that is with the Kg option selected, the effect of
the axial stress after the first analysis is used to modify the stiffness of the member. A second
analysis is then performed using the original load vector. Large & small P-Delta effects are
always included (1 or 2 iterations will usually be sufficient)
With Small Delta option both the large & small P-Delta effects are included in calculating the
end forces, (5 to 10 iterations will usually be sufficient).

-Nonlinear analysis is restricted to structures where members carry the axial load from one

Er.Sukanta Adhikari,
You have for got one important command for using P-Delta analysis.
The REPEAT load command is a must and is different from LOAD COMBINATION. This has
alsready been explained in my previous postings.
Without this REPEAT LOAD command the analysis of no use and will not yield the required result
in STAADPRO.

"The lateral loading must be present concurrently with the vertical loading for proper
consideration of the P Delta effect. This introduces the need to use The REPEAT LOAD facility in
STAAD. This facility allows the user to combine previously defined primary load cases to create a
new primary load case"
