LUCY AND PETER IN THE NOVEL THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA
(PRINCE CASPIAN) BY C.S LEWIS. ADVISORS, (1) Drs. H. Hardono,

This study is concerned with expressive acts used by Lucy and Peter in the
novel The Chronicles of Narnia ( Prince Caspian) By C.S Lewis. More
specifically, this study is intended to classify the expressive acts used by Lucy and
Peter in their utteraces, to describe how the expressive act used by them. Thus, the
statement of the problem the writer states are: (1) What kinds of expressive acts
are used by Lucy and Peter in the novel The Chronicles of Narnia ( Prince
Caspian) By C.S Lewis ?. (2) How do they use those expressive acts?
In this study, the writer applies the qualitative approach to find out
expressive acts because the data are in the form of words. The writer uses
descriptive method to produce descriptive information in this study. Meanwhile,
the writer uses content analysis as her technique to give clear explanation about
her problems. The source of data which is used by the writer in her study is novel
entitled The chronicles of Narnia ( Prince Caspian) by C.S Lewis. In colleting the
data, the writer uses the following steps are (1) reading the novel carefully in
many times, (2) segmenting the dialogue into fragment, and (3) identifying the
expressive acts. The writer also takes the procedure of analysis by classifying the
expressive acts are used by Lucy and Peter, describing how they use those
expressive acts. Finally, the writer presents the result of the analysis.
After analyzing the data, the writer finds out the kind of expressive acts
used by Peter is the act of apologizing, it happens three times. Lucy uses the act of
apologizing, it happens four times. The act of welcoming is used by Peter for
three times, while Lucy uses it for two times. The act of complaining is used by
Peter and Lucy for two times. The act of scolding is used by peter and Lucy, it
happens three times. The act of mocking is used by Peter and Lucy for three
times. The act of complementing is used by Peter and Lucy for one time. The act
of thanking is used by Peter for only one time. The act of leave taking is used by
Peter for only one time. The writer also finds out of the ways to express the kinds
of expressive act. By expressing the feeling directly is used by Peter for nine
times, while Lucy uses it for six times. Thus, by expressing the feeling indirectly
is used by Lucy for two times. By controlling the onset of the feeling is used by
Peter and Lucy for one time.
Based on the findings, the writer concludes that there are 22 fragments
analyzed; the kind of expressive act mostly uttered by Peter and Lucy is the act of
apologizing. It is uttered by them because they want to show their emotion of
regretfullness to someone. In addition, the ways of expressing the feeling mostly
used is expressing the feeling directly because they want to express directly in
order to get respond from other.
