Number" button => "Format Page Numbers...". Pick your number format (arabic). Now
decide what you want, either choose "Continue from previous section" if you want your
numbers to continue (e.g. i, ii, iii, iv, 5, 6, 7, ...) or choose "Start at" followed by "1" to restart
the numbering (e.g. i, ii, iii, iv, 1, 2, 3, ...).
First, you need to have things in sections (Page Layout > Breaks > Section Breaks > Next
Page . . . do not use Insert > Page Break). Just to take three sections, front matter without
page numbers, front matter with page numbers (roman), and text with numbers (arabic).
Each section is separated by a section break. With the headers active, you'll see the Header &
Footer Tools. When you insert the page numbers, you want to delink the sections (linked,
they say "Same as Previous"; delinked they do not). Then you can change the numbering
styles. If something is in a header before you delinked it, and you want it gone, delete it.

This page will inform you about page numbers, including:

Note: In Word 2013, you can no longer double click on the header or footer to edit them.
Instead, right click on the header or footer and choose Edit Footer (or header) to get into
editing mode.
When you are finished editing, you can get back to the normal document by hitting the Close
Header and Footer button in the Header Design Ribbon.
View this video and or see the written sections below on how to achieve this.

The following instructions demonstrate numbering a dissertation document according to
Rackhams guidelines. These steps assume you are including a title page, a copyright page,
dedication and acknowledgements and other front matter, and then the body of your
dissertation.
1. Put your cursor on the first page that needs the Roman
numeral.
2. On the Insert Ribbon, in the Header & Footer Group, click on
the arrow under the Footer icon and select Edit Footer.
5
3. You should now be in the footer of that page; in theHeader &
Footer Tools Design Ribbon, in the Navigation Group, unlink
this sections footer from previous sections footer by clicking
the highlighted Link to Previousicon.
4. Put your cursor in the header area, and again click the
highlighted Link to Previousicon.
5. Scroll down to the first page of the body of your dissertation
(the chapters), make sure your cursor is in the footer, and click
the highlighted Link to Previousicon again.
6. Repeat for the header area.
You have now successfully unlinked footers of these sections. Any page numbers you put in
the body of your document will not affect the page numbering of your front matter, and vice
versa.
6
5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to set the page numbers for this section.
We have noticed in Office 2010 that sometimes when you
insert the page number in the chapters sections it
automatically turns to Arabic. If that is the case, then you just
need to follow step 3 to make it start at 1.
