And while her managerial and
programmatic achievements as
the 4-H educator in Grafton

annual reports, Kathys success
in running the annual Grafton

Golf Tournament deserves special mention, if only for its feat of
raising tens of thousands of dollars to support 4-H and Kathy's
achievement in turning the management of the tournament over
to a group of capable volunteers.

Authentic compassion, and a little push

Tellingly, when asked to share

her strongest, fondest 4-H memories, Kathy starts with the big
picture but quickly moves to the
more intimate stories. One of
my strongest memories is of the
2001 4-H centennial, when we
were looking at what the future
of 4-H should be. We brought
groups of kids togetherone
young man, Glenn Putnam, was
very dependable, very intelligent,
but very quiet at that time. But
during those conversations about
4-Hs future he had some profound thoughts. He made such a
good impression on me that we
sent him to represent New
Hampshire 4-H at regional and
national events. Today, Glenn
runs an organic dairy farm.

and I got a call from her parents

program would be more inviting
and convenient, but always keeping the door open for families to
come back. Of course theres
value to the current club model,
but I think its a good time to get
like-minded people together, parents, 4-H leaders, to see if that
model still has meaning in their
lives.

I reconnected with one woman

who was a student of mine and
she told me to remember the

When you were born, you were such a blessing

Papas blue eyes, Nanas smile, my full name
What an honor it was to watch you grow
How proud Iwas when you said you wanted
to be just like me!
You grabbed the gavel and spoke loud and clear
At only 13 the crowd couldnt help but cheer
As the years went by, we only visited here and there
Some how we realized we each had
our own crosses to bear
Word of your passing, hit me like a freight train
Iturn to the Lord to help endure the pain
Of some of lifes questions Iwill never know why
I only wish we could have said goodbye.

Be aware of a recent phone scam

that has been identified in the
North Country. Callers first
report to be an IRS Recovery
Agent (or possibly other collection agency) and demand money
to be wired to them in a short
time frame. A short time later a
second call is received from a
subject reporting to be from the
Grafton
County
Sheriff's
Department. The caller threatens
to arrest the person if money is
not wired immediately, caller ID
on the call received may show a
number to the Grafton County
Sheriffs Department.

This is a scam, be aware that the

technology exists that allows
callers to place calls with fake
caller ID's.
It is neither a policy, nor a procedure of the Grafton County
Sheriff's Department to call and
demand money to be wired to
any location.

If you receive a phone call of this

nature please contact the Grafton
County Sheriff's Department or
your local law enforcement
agency.

If you need to verify the authenticity of Sheriffs Department

staff please contact the department directly at (603) 787 - 2111.

A Love Affair with Four Walls

At dinnertime yesterday it was

We arose before dawn with the
thermometer reading -8.
Tomorrow evening we could be
looking at -15, maybe colder.
Needless to say, its freezing
out.

Beth

Inside the cabin, its warm, but

our walls of stacked logs are
our only barrier against the
frigid temperatures of this winter week. The wind rushes past
the treetops and howls, unrestrained, into our clearing. Our
ears hear it; a combination of
imagination and memory leaves
us thinking that we felt it.
Another log goes on the fire.

The tick-tock of the clock

marks the moments, minutes,
hours. Were here beside the
wood stove, tending, feeding,
guarding the fire, the heat radiating from the stove, to the loft,

out to the table, and touching

the walls. Between the small
cracks and deep in the corners,
hot and cold air meet. When we
relinquish our duties for the
night and tuck into our loft bed,
the heat loses power, retreats,
and the cold seeps in. Subtly,
slowly, and never quite completely...for the walls hold their
ground loyally, admirably. We
are grateful, and filled with care
for our little place. Indeed, its
easier to love when our vulnerability is writ so clearly. Never
have the pine, spruce, fir, and
hemlock logs that form our
home seemed so personal and
so dear, as on these nights when
we could not live without their
steady presence.
Stacked,
spiked, and chinked under the
sun of summer, their sturdy protection is easily personified to a
bond of friendship in the wintry
wind. We are touched by the
