Today we are living in the fast paced world or rocket science. Over time many things
have changed; fashion, opinions, politics, and even morals, standards and values. These
changing times have given birth to a new breed of Muslims, known as "Ittehadis".
As everyone has a purpose & everything has a purpose. The sole purpose of these
Ittehadis is "Ittehad---Unity among Muslims", at any cost, even if be at the cost of their
beliefs and self-respect.
Is Unity There In The Holy Quran? There is no doubt that Islam promotes Unity amongst
the believers and gives it such importance that ALLAH (SWT) in a verse of the Quran
ordered the PROPHET (SAWW) to not even stand in the Mosque which was resulting in
division amongst the believers. Below verse of the Quran talks about this:

And there are those who put up a mosque by way of mischief and infidelity - to
disunite the Believers - and in preparation for one who warred against ALLAH (SWT) and
His Messenger aforetime. They will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but
good; But ALLAH (SWT) doth declare that they are certainly liars. Never stand thou forth
therein. [9:107-108]
There is another verse of the Quran which talks about unity and asks the believers not
be divided. ALLAH (SWT) says in the Holy Quran:

And hold-on to the rope of ALLAH (SWT) and be not divided amongst yourselves [3:103]

At yet another place ALLAH (SWT) says:

All believers are but brethren. Hence, [whenever they are at odds,] make peace between
your two brethren, and remain conscious of God, so that you might be graced with His
mercy. [49:10]

Principle & Guidelines For Unity: Once we know and realize the importance of Unity
amongst the believers, it is further very important to understand what guidelines have
ALLAH (SWT) and the Holy AHLULBAIT (AS) laid down for promoting and achieving this
unity.
This is very important in the current era since we see many divisions and group amongst
the Shia themselves and also amongst the various other sects of Islam. Also keeping in
mind that there are a group of people who are willing to even compromise and twist the
truth to achieve this Unity. Therefore its very important to know and understand this
issue in the light of the verses of the Holy Quran and the saying of the Holy AHLULBAIT
(AS).
In explanation of the above verse [3:103] ABU JAFAR IMAM BAQIR (AS) says:

:
" :
ABU JAFAR IMAM BAQIR (AS) said, AAL - E - MOHAMMAD are the rope of ALLAH (SWT)
to which people are ordered to hold on to. Then IMAM (AS) recited the verse, And
hold-on to the rope of ALLAH (SWT) and be not divided amongst yourselves [3:103].

Another narration explains the above verse:

: { } :

2

Narrated Abu Jarood from ABU JAFAR IMAM BAQIR (AS) about the words of ALLAH
(SWT), "And do not be divided" [3:103],
IMAM (AS) said, "Verily ALLAH (SWT) knew that they (the community) would divide
after their Prophet (saw) and would differ amongst themselves, so He forbid them from
being divided like he forbid the ones before them and ordered them to gather upon the
Wilayah of AAL - E - MOHAMMAD (AS) and not be divided."
[Source: Tafseer al-Qummi, Vol. 1, Pg. 108]

Our lives be sacrificed for these words of FATEMA ZEHRA (SA) wherein she clearly lays
out the basis and principle of unity amongst the Muslim Ummah.
FATEMA ZEHRA (SA) said in her famous sermon of Fidak:

: ()
"ALLAH (SWT) has made our obedience as the system/order of the community and our
Imamat as a safety from being divided into groups."
[Source: al-Ehtejaaj, Vol. 1, Pg. 99]

In explanation to the verse [49:10] quoted above we would like to present and another
verse of the same chapter in which ALLAH (SWT) says

THE BEDOUIN say, We have attained to faith. Say [unto them, O Muhammad]: You
have not [yet] attained to faith; you should [rather] say, We have [outwardly]
surrendered - for [true] faith has not yet entered your hearts But if you [truly] pay heed
unto God and His Apostle, He will not let the least of your deeds go to waste: for,
behold, God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.[49:14]
This clearly shows that there are two group of people one who have not yet attained
faith and are believes only on the face [Muslims], while the another group of people are

the one who have truly surrendered to the will of ALLAH (SWT) and his PROPHET
(SAWW)[Momins] .
ALLAH (SWT) further defines the true believes in the following verse:

[Know that true] believers are only those who have attained to faith in God and His
Apostle and have left all doubt behind, and who strive hard in Gods cause with their
possessions and their lives: it is they, they who are true to their word! [49:15]

Thus true believers or Momins are those who believe in the WILAYAT OFALLAH (SWT),
his PROPHET (SAWW) and the WILAYAT OF HAZRAT ALI (AS), because according to
numerous narrations of the HOLY PROPHET (SAWW) only those people who believe in
the Wilayat of HAZRAT ALI (AS), actually believe in the Wilayat of the HOLY PROPHET
(SAWW).
Now carefully looking at the verse [49:10] clearly shows that ALLAH (SWT) has stressed
for unity between Momins and not Muslims.
Thus according to the Holy Quran also unity should be between those who believe in the
Wilayat of HAZRAT ALI (AS) and nothing other than that.
Is Unity Possible With Enemies Of AHLULBAIT (AS) ? To add to the above, we would
want to address another point raised by those who push for unity with the Sunnis.
These people claim that the Sunnis who although follow the enemies of the AHLULBAIT
(AS) but they themselves are not the enemies of the AHLULBAIT (AS) and hence its
correct to having unity with them. This again is a big lie and for now we are quoting only
a single narration of the PROPHET (SAWW).
Prophet MOHAMMAD (SAWW) in his sermon of Ghadeer:

.
.

4

"O people! There shall soon be leaders after me who shall invite (people) to the Fire,
and on the Day of Judgment they shall not be helped."
"O people! Indeed, Allah and I are both clear of them."
"O people! They, their supporters, their followers, and their adherents shall be in the
lowest depths of the Fire; and evil, indeed, is the abode of the arrogant."
[Source: Al-Ehtejaaj, Vol. 1, Pg. 83]

Should we still go for unity with those who are condemned to be in Hell by Prophet
MOHAMMAD (SAWW)???
In short unity between different sects of Islam is like the unity and co-operation
between different nations of the world. They would co-operate with each other in their
day to day affairs and help the distressed in times of need, but not at the cost of their
integrity.
Conclusion: The above clearly proofs that the basis of Unity amongst the Momineen is
the Wilayat/Imamat of the AHLULBAIT (AS). And it is necessary that when we are
promoting this unity we invite everyone to the Wilayat of the AHLULBAIT (AS). And
along with this we should keep in mind that the Wilayat of the AHLULBAIT (AS) is only
accepted if its accompanied with Tabarra and hatred with their enemies.
In-Sha-ALAH (SWT) more details on Tabarra will come in our future issues. We end the
discussion with one last narration from IMAM SADIQ (AS)

: :
.
Someone said to IMAM SADIQ (AS), "So and So person loves you (befriends you) but he
is weak in doing Tabarra from Your enemies. IMAM (AS) replied, "It is impossible, Liar is
the one who claims that he loves Us but does not to tabarra from our enemies"
