a. Ring life can be estimated by knowing spindle speeds, yarn type, traveler weights that will be run.
These factors determine the pressure of the traveler against the ring and of course as these
pressures increase, the ring life decreases. Temp and humidity considerations, proper centering,
proper traveler change cycles regarding the wear cycle of the traveler ( do not run travelers that
are heavily worn as this presents a ring surface that is contacted differently from what a new
traveler presents to the ring when travelers are changed.
b. Even the static electricity generated by the traveler running on the ring can affect the
performance of the ring and traveler. In some cases it is necessary to ground the ring rails to the
frame to drain off this static charge.
c. Ring diameters should be selected that are appropriate for the yarn counts and speeds that will be
run.
d. Angle of pull relates to the ring diameter and the bobbin diameter. This angle needs to be a
minimum of 30 degrees otherwise start up after doffing will yield higher end breaks. (Draw an line
from the traveler on the ring that is tangent to the empty bobbin surface. Then draw a line from
the center of the spindle to the traveler. The resultant angle is called the angle of pull.) In other
words the tension between the traveler and the bobbin surface is greater as the angle is smaller.
Of course you cannot put a tension meter on the yarn at this point during running but the tension
can be calculated and demonstrated with force vectors. When ordering rings or bobbins, and there
is thought to change the diameter of either or both of these, take in consideration what the angle
of pull will be to avoid future problems.

RING TRAVELLER:
System is based on weight of 10 Travellers, 10 Travellers weighing 10 grains denotes size of
Traveller No . 1.
10 Travellers weigh 10 Grains, where in 1 Gram = 15.432 Grains.
When the weight of Ten Travellers is less than 10 Grains, The Size is written with the number of
followed by Diagonal Line and Zero. These are called Ought Travellers or Nought Travellers.

TRAVELLER FUNCTIONS:
Combines with spindle rotation within the traveler race (ring) along with feed of fiber from front
roll to twist fibers into yarn.
Applies proper tension to form a package that has proper firmness to be wound off at the next
process
Acts as a differential between the rotation of the spindle, and the delivery of the front roll as the
yarn package changes in diameter. The traveler compensates by speeding up on the large
diameter and slowing down as the ring rail traverses to the top of the stroke where the diameter
is least.

Withstand the continuous friction against the ring for days and even weeks. Travelers run at
surface speeds from 60 miles per hour to up to 100 miles per hour. The only lubrication is what
the fiber contributes. Traveler speed is commonly referred to in meters per second. Compact
yarn has limited hairiness thus contributing less lubrication. These yarns require a very low center
of gravity to force the yarn close to traveler and ring contact area so the limited fiber can
contribute some lubrication.
Traveler profile and ring profile must be able to work together to give good contact to distribute
wear properly while giving sufficient clearance for the yarn.

The relation of traveler dimensions to these factors:

1. Yarn size or count
2. Yarn twist
3 . Production speed - higher speeds require a lower center of gravity
4. Heat sensitive yarns require higher travelers to get yarn away from the contact area where heat is
generated.
5. Slub yarns require higher center to allow additional yarn clearance
Wear & Tear: Where to look for traveler wear and what is a reasonable amount. Show the angle of
wear within the traveler and how this relates to the lean of the traveler as the yarn between the
bobbin and traveler pulls the traveler around the ring against the braking force exerted by the
curvature of the ring.
