STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Does Antigravity technology exist? Will it revolutionize space exploration and

energy production? Can we succeed in interstellar propulsion concepts? When will the
pulse detonation engine rules out the existing engine? These are some of the questions
which are still out there to be answered. Bringing fresh ideas along with new tools and
technologies is the better way to overcome these questions. I, Kamalanathan, as an
Aeronautical engineer, believe that this can be done only if we find a common ground
with the right attitude for research oriented studies. These kinds of science and
technologies triggered me to know the gravity of research and motivated me to apply
for the master program that has an exact ambience for my research proposal that need
to be executed in the university. University of Pisa and the Space Engineering program
will definitely edify me to exalt within the periphery of the aerospace challenges.
Diversity of experimental facilities in support of space research areas and the
propulsion facilities which covers a wide range of space technologies, from electric
rocket, to hypersonic aerothermodynamics, to chemical rocket propulsion, to rotor
dynamics and cavitation of liquid propellant rocket engines, plan of study, graduate
research assistantship and graduate teaching assistantship attracted me to apply Space
Engineering program in University of Pisa.
Three years of engineering experience with the aerospace giants like Boeing, Bell
Helicopters and Pratt & Whitney at Infotech Enterprises limited, strengthened my
knowledge in the field of aerospace structures and gas turbines. These experiences will
definitely pave me a better support throughout my studies and the research activities
that need to be carried out for my thesis and even for the Graduate Research
Assistantship.
I take this opportunity to describe my educational background and the objective that
motivated me to pursue a career in aerospace engineering. I have completed my higher
secondary examination, scoring 85% in basic science and Mathematics. With that
percentile, I got a meritorious Under-graduation offer from one of the best college in
Tamilnadu, India.
During my school days, I used to spend times in an automobile hanger near my house,
where I gained some knowledge on automobile engines and other systems of it. As I had
some knowledge on automobile engines, I had a keen interest to know about aircraft
engines and rockets and how does it work? So, in my perspective, I was very clear in
choosing aerospace engineering with propulsion as a main elective to throttle my
career.

In my undergraduate years, I have acquired a strong grounding in the fundamentals of

the basic aerospace engineering like aircraft structures, aerodynamics and propulsion.
Even though I dont have propulsion in first two years, I will be in library to for more
hours to know about engines, as I dont constraint myself with the syllabus. Fortunately,
I had to chance to be trained by Senior Scientist from Indian Defense on Aircraft
Propulsion Engineering. With the basics, I was more focused on Chemical propulsion
and the physics behind the combustion in Engines. I have read through some books on
Deflagration and Detonation Combustion, which finally triggered me to take up a
challenge to dig and explore in Pulse Detonation Engines. Consequently, I have done my
final thesis on Design and Analysis of Pulse Detonation Engine with Circular rotary
valves using CATIA, MATLAB and CFD-FLUENT. My thesis was selected as one of the
best in a national level conference held at BITS, Pilani, and PCET, Coimbatore, India. In
my work place, I had a chance to work on Decoking of Oil pipes in India open
Innovation initiative of Rolls-Royce.
During my masters, I would like to indulge more in space propulsion and transportation
with the knowledge that I have gained from my studies and work experience. University
of Pisa had many researchers worked on Pulse detonation engine. This would be the
added advantage for me to enrich my knowledge and to produce a better thesis on
behalf on my masters. Once I finish my masters, my next will be the doctoral research,
which would definitely stiffen me to serve my nation.
Your extremely distinguished faculties and the perfect breadth and depth of the
curriculum coupled with stimulating research environment seem to be the right mix for
me to do my masters. I believe that Master of Science in space engineering will help me
to acquire the knowledge, skills and versatility needed to reach my full potential as an
engineer.
I sincerely hope to have a mutually beneficial association with the University to
contribute my best towards making a successful research endeavor. Keeping this in
mind, joining your university seems to be an excellent first step for me. Thanks for your
Consideration.
