OVERVIEW

IACET

The power grid is currently designed and operated as a just in time energy
delivery system. Energy storage is potentially a design changer as it can
store excess energy for delivery when it is needed. It can provide balancing
services, mitigation of large energy ramps from variable renewable generation,
transmission loading relief, improve power quality and other services. Although
energy storage technology is rapidly advancing, our tools lag for including
storage in transmission planning, grid operations and markets.

EUCI has been

approved as an
Authorized Provider
by the International
Association for Continuing Education
and Training (IACET), 1760 Old
Meadow Road, Suite 500, McLean,
VA 22102. In obtaining this
approval, EUCI has demonstrated
that it complies with the ANSI/
IACET Standards which are widely
recognized as standards of good
practice internationally.

Our presenter, Dave Hawkins, is a Principal Investigator for the integration

of renewable resources at the California ISO. Join him in this webinar as he
examines how storage fits the needs of Independent System Operators,
and how it can enhance utility strategies.
This webinar will cover the types of technology available and four key questions:
1. What type(s) of energy storage is needed?
2. How much do we need and when?
3. Where do we need it and how will we use it?
4. What are the key details and lessons learned from recent field tests?
It will also cover some of the technical and market barriers that must be
overcome, and the plans for overcoming these issues.
This webinar will provide a comprehensive update on state-of-the-art energy
storage technology, the market changes anticipated for storage and the
potential applications of storage. This includes concepts on the role of energy
storage in smart grid strategies.

Who Should Attend

Utility executives with renewable energy responsibilities

Managers of strategic planning
Finance and investment professionals
Renewable and clean-tech project developers
Grid operators
Transmission and distribution planners

Energy storage providers

As a result of their Authorized

Provider membership status, EUCI is
authorized to offer IACET CEUs for
its programs that qualify under the
ANSI/IACET Standards.
EUCI is authorized by IACET to offer
0.1 CEU for this program.
Requirements for Successful
Completion of Program
Participants must be logged in to
the web conference for its entirety to
receive continuing education credit.
Instructional Methods

Agenda

Program Agenda

A short overview of why we need energy storage - the

key technologies and characteristics
o Drivers for energy storage deployment renewables
o Reduction of GHG
Results of current field tests and proposed tests
o Flywheels
o Batteries
o Large energy storage compressed air and water
storage
How much storage is needed what applications
o Market based applications
o Transmission asset utilization
o Integration of renewables
o Smart grid applications
Market changes required for storage

Unique storage characteristics, the strengths and

weaknesses, and which is the right one
o Energy storage resources that have very fast
response rates but can only sustain energy
injection/charging for 15 minutes or less
o Other types of storage not as fast but can provide
several hours of energy storage
Despite the relative expense, energy storage offers a
number of applications that create a host of potential
values. How will the market measure and apply value
those applications?

Instructor
David Hawkins, Lead Renewables Power Engineer, California ISO
David Hawkins is the Lead Renewables Power Engineer in the Operations Division at the California ISO. He is a Principal
Investigator for the integration of renewable resources at the CAISO. The CAISO has a major project to assess the operational
impact on intermittent resources such as wind generation. The objective is to identify potential grid operations, market
operations and transmission issues and develop strategies to mitigate these issues. He is also responsible for assessment of
new technologies such as energy storage technology and their potential application for solving operating issues.
Dave has over 40 years of experience in the power industry with 15 years with Consolidated Edison Co of New York in
the Engineering and R&D areas, 14 years with PG&E in Computer Operations, Engineering Computer Applications and
Distribution Systems. He has been with the California ISO for 12 years in Grid Operations and coordinator of the organizations
R&D programs. He is a graduate from the University of Michigan in Electric Engineering and Life Member of IEEE.

Logging in to the Web conference

After registration, each registrant will receive a confirmation of payment or an invoice, depending on method of payment. Each
registrant will also receive an e-mail with appropriate login information and more information regarding the event 24 hours prior
to the start of the event. To log on, you will need a Windows PC with a broadband connection and audio system.
WHAT IS A SINGLE SITE CONNECTION?
A site connection allows a single connection to the web conference. That connection is open to any number of users in a
collaborative setting. Because there are no travel expenses and only a single registration fee is required, each additional
participant lowers the cost per participant significantly.
By purchasing a site connection, you can invite as many people as you would like to view and participate in the session
from a single location. Set up the session in a conference room and project the presentation and chat on a large screen. You
also have rights to distribute copies of the presentation materials to everyone involved. Please note that audio is received
via the computer sound system and must be broadcast to your group.
If for any reason a relevant stakeholder cannot co-locate for the session, we encourage you to include that person by
purchasing an additional connection at the reduced fee of $195 per session. This will ensure that every member of a team
receives the same relevant, timely information in the most efficient way.
If you have any technical or purchasing questions, please contact us at (303) 770.8800.
