STAFF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL

ABSTRACTS

The title of the Research Project is “ A study on the Effectiveness of Staff Appraisal System and
Hindustan Latex Ltd, Peroorkada Factory.”

General Objective

Performance Appraisal is a tool to measure the human resource functions in an industrial


organisation. It is used for discovering, analysing and classifying the differences amongst
workers vis-à-vis job standards. It is an essential component of good management practice. As a
part of comprehensive performance system, performance appraisal ca be a major contribution
towards achieving a high level of motivation, performance and productivity. Hindustan Latex
Ltd; Peroorkada Factory, Trivandrum is a leading organisation in the area of production of
contraceptives and other health care devices. There is a performance appraisal system installed in
this organisation. A study on the performance appraisal in this unique institution will help to
analyse its effectiveness as a tool in managing its human resources.

Specific Objectives

1) To examine whether the staff appraisal is free from bias


2) O find out whether the training after appraisal improve performance
3) To analyse the effect of appraisal system on the motivational level of employees
4) To see whether employees are satisfied with present system
5) To understand whether employees get a feedback of the appraised data
6) To study whether appraised data is used for career planning
7) To find out whether the frequency of staff appraisal is appropriate
8) To find out whether appraisal helps employees to improve their overall performance
Research Methodology

Universe of the Study

The universe of the study constitutes permanent workers of Hindustan Latex Ltd Peroorkada
Factory, Trivandrum-695005
Pilot Study

A pilot study was conducted as a preliminary step to collect the actual data and also to get
acquainted and to familiarize the researcher with the organization. The pilot study was conducted
with the following objectives:

∗ To finalise the subject matter of research


∗ To arrive at an opinion o the feasibility of the main study
∗ To know about the types of data to be collected and how it is to be collected
∗ To become more aware of the practical implication of the main study
Sampling

The size of the universe comes to 780 workers. The research has selected only a respective
sample of workers, which comes to 50. Accordingly the ample size is 6.4% of the total
respondents.

Percentage is arrived at:- (50/780)*100=6.4%

Type and Source of Data

The information required for the study is obtained by gathering primary data as well as
secondary data

a) Primary Data
The main instrument of data collection was that, the researcher personally administered with
interview schedules to the respondents. The researcher has also conducts informal
discussions with management representatives, workers and trade union officials to get a
comprehensive idea about the subject

b) Secondary Data
Secondary data was collected mainly from the personal Department of the Company. It
helped in getting sufficient information about the organisation and also its overall
performance. Published books, brochures, bulletins and other documents have also helped to
get the secondary data
Data Processing

The collected data was analysed and interpreted to get appraisal results. The technique of coding,
classification, tabulation and preparation of master sheet have been used in the data processing

Limitations of the Study

c) Inaccessibility to some worksites
d) Suspicion among workers
e) Busy work schedules
Performance appraisal is an effective tool to measure the human resource function in an

industrial organisation. It helps to evolve parameters to analyse and review the performances of

personnel to ensure the best advantage from both the individual and organisation. Appraisal is

also useful to motivate the employees through counselling, coaching and career planning. The

mission of the company is to be come “ the leader” in the field of manufacture of contraceptives

and health devices.
