1. A transformer has the nameplate of 50 kVA, 480 V/120 V.

a. Determine the maximum rating current in HV and LV coils of the transformer.
b. If the HV side is connected to a 300-V ac generator, what is the maximum
rating real power of load that can be connected to LV side in case of
i. The load is resistive
ii. The load power factor is 0.90
c. If the HV side is connected to a 200-V ac generator and a load connected in
LV consumes 24 kVA. Is the transformer overloaded? Justify your answer.
2. Characteristics of the transformer in question (1) are evaluated. For this purpose the
transformer was examined in a short-circuit test as shown in figure.

During the test, the following results were obtained:

Esc = 100 V
Isc = 9.8 A
Psc = 2.9 W
i.
ii.

Calculate the percentage impedance of the transformer.

On an application in the single-phase circuit, determine the voltage
regulation of the transformer from no-load to full-load for a 40-kW resistive
load, knowing that primary supply voltage is fixed at 480 V.

3. Three transformers as evaluated in question (2) are used in the three-phase electrical
line to step down a line voltage of 480 V to 120 V to supply power to a home industry
plant. The plant draws 30 kW at a lagging power factor of 86%. If I2R losses and the
reactive power associated with the mutual and the leakage fluxes are negligible,
calculate currents in each transformer in case of
a. They are connected in delta-delta connection.
b. They are connected in Y-Y connection.
c. In real condition, to have long operation life of the transformers, which
connection you will select between 3(a) and 3(b)? Write your reasons.
