Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary I feel that I have learnt allot from it and this knowledge has
helped me greatly with the final product. I have learnt how to do things much better and of
a higher standard. For example all the research I did was of a much higher standard as I had
learnt from the preliminary what I need to know for my product, so when I was researching
for my final product I was able to see what I needed as I had already had practice in
collecting it.
My skills in allot of the technologies had improved as well, when doing the preliminary my
skills in programs like Photoshop and Indesign where a little ropy and I had little to no
experience with them. But by the time I was making the final product my skills where allot
better as I had practiced and learnt new skills asking other students and using YouTube to
watch videos on how to do things. By the end of the task I was very competent with all
these programs.
My designing skills where very basic in the preliminary because at the time of designing it I
had not looked at many magazines and didnt have much experience and knowledge with
them, and I feel its for this reason my preliminary design was not that great. So to make
sure this didnt happen again I looked at many magazines of the same genre of magazine as
mine. I also did some in depth analysis of some magazines so that I knew everything about
the style and layout of magazine of the same genre as mine.
Another thing I learnt was that there are many things you need to do to appeal to your
audience. When doing my preliminary I was not aware how important things like codes and
conventions and semiotics where, I was aware they were important but did not think they
were as important as they actually are. I found out how important they where during my
research and evaluations of other magazines. So once I had figured this out I set out to make
sure my magazine did this better than my preliminary and that it represented my audience
and appealed to them in every way.
All round I think that I have learnt greatly since the preliminary in each part of making a
music magazine. I learnt from all my mistakes and got allot better at using all the
technologies. I did allot of research and planning and found out all the codes and
conventions for a music magazine of my genre. If I had not done the preliminary I do not
think any of my work would be of the quality that it is know.
