Dear Friends in Christ,

Greetings in the name of our Lord.
Time is
rapidly passing by and the return to Rhodesiacloser. We anticipate leaving by plane during
June, Lord willing;
And, how we long for that
time.
However, v/e are enjoying the fellowship

of you precious Christians in America. Thus far we have traveled 30,000

miles by car and presented the Rhodesian challenge at an average of over
orree'-a day.

Class Completed

No less than "thrilling" would I use to describe the privilege of

teaching in the Missions Department of Ozark Bible College during the fall
semester of 1964-65. Twenty-four upperclassmen and I discussed "Pioneering
in Primitive Missions," Emphasis was placed on the transition of one's
self from one culture into another; And, the vital task of establishing

a work designed to produce churches which can grow and live naturally in
their own environment without the direction of "foreign" support and guide.
Churches of SE Minnesota To Provide Vehicle

How wonderful it was to receive a phone call from Richard Snell,

Minister of the Church of Christ of Eagle Lake, Minn., learning that he and
the elders were going to represent our need for a vehicle to" the churches

in South Eastern Minnesota. One of our sponsoring churches, located at

Truman, Minn, had given their approval;
and, it was recommended that Bro.
Snell, assisted by Wayne Polden, P/Iinister of the Church o.f Christ at

Truman, lead in this project, praise God!

The Dodge Power Wagon we had was demolished in a head on collision

just before our coming to America and the insurance money was used to
^Ppiy
the pressing Chidarnoyo Mission indebtedness of just over t.en
thousand dollars.

Impact Given To Hospital Drive

Details of how a room in the proposed Chidarnoyo Christian Hospital can

be provided for only Three-Hundred dollars is carried in the HORIZONS publi
cation of February 6th.

But, not stated there is the wonderful news that

Bro. WALTER BIRNEY, along with the Christians at Gopeland, Kansas, is

assisting in the raising of Fifty Thousand Dollars to erect Christian
Hospital at Chidarnoyo, some 500 miles north of the one at Mashoko.

Con

struction is to begin this coming fall and is to be completed in 1966 when

a Doctor will be available to take over the medical work.

The church at

Copeland, with it's attendance around 90 and mission budget set at |5,596.:0

for 1965, is giving $90.00 monthly to the building fund of the Hospital,

plus publicizing and speaking to area churches. Again we say, Praise God.

Funds for our return trip to Rhodesia, a water system, and home in
Rhodesia still must be raised during the remaining four months, and we
continue to rely on God to supply, through you, these needs; but, we are
so thankful that God has placed opportunities before us in Africa to be
met.

To this end we have dedicated our lives that the harvest, now ready,
will be reaped before it is lost. Pray with us that God will raise up the
needed laborers to enter the harvest, and that needs will be met to accom

plish the task, both spiritually and materially. May we be channels

through which these blessings can flow, and may we not rest until every
ear has heard the joyous message of Christ our Lord.

As of the lOth of May aro\md $16 ,000 had been prom

ised or given for the construction of the Chi^oyo

first of April about one thousand dollars has been
given or committed each week. This editor had been
hoping that most of the fifty thousand dollars would

be committed before Ziden Nutt went back to Rhodesia

If the committments continue coming in as they have
the past six weeks nearly half of the total will be

gifts

Eveiy gift, every prayer, every expression of interestall these are encouraging in this hospital drive. In

the past few weeks several events have been especially

enco\iraging.

Some of these I would like to share now:

1. About the first of April, Mr. and Mrs, Sam

Fox, a young couple in Nebraska Christian

College, sent a special gift for the hospital.

To me this gift meant what I believe Jesus was

talking about concerning the gift of the widow,

2, The second event concerns the Sunset Park

Church of Christ in Pueblo, Colorado, where

Max Johnson is the minister.

This young con

gregation, with an attendaxice around 80, and

a recently completed building has given $300

or more already,

3^ On April 12th I spoke to a men's fellowship

meeting in Boulder, Colorado, where Warre.

Andrews is the minister. This presentation

was arranged by brother Andrews and

Bill

Linton, the hospital representative in that

area. pe meeting was hosted by a new church

meeting in a lodge hall. About 50 men and boys

^ attended. At the conclusion of the meeting
theytvotM to give at least $300 in the next

12 months and many of them, indicated a desire

to get their home congregations to give also

even though most of them were from missionary
congregations. These Colorado brethren certain
ly have set an inspiring example for the rpst.
OF the nation.

U. The fourth event concerns a couple who decided

the construction of the hospital was moreimportant than their having inside bathroom facili

ties. So they are giving $300 to the hospital,

instead of putting in this modern convenience.

FAITH

AND

GIVING

by Woodrow Phillips

Most Christians want to see the work of the Lord pro

gress. Many are willing to share of their material
resource and their spiritual treasure to see this ad

vance become a reality.

Our prayers and our gifts

show that we want to have others reached

gospel
giving?

with

the

but how much faith do we demonstrate in our

Tbo often, I am afraid that we give out of our

uries and not out of our necessities. We may

lux
give

up a new car, a new suit or a new article of furni

ture but these are seldom gifts or goods that test

our faith in the promises of God.

Three scriptures are used in varying ways to talk

about giving and I wonder if we really understand

any of them? We quote, "give and it shall be given

unto you," and encourage each other in giving
be
cause God has promised that we cannot outgive Him.
Then we turn to the book of James and read this text

(4:3) "-e ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss

that ye may spend it in your pleasures."

It becomes

evident that giving to get in return is not

giving

by faith but giving by sight. VJe give selfishly becavise we want God to bless us. Strangely enough He
willbut if the goods He gives are used only on
our pleasure He must withhold this blessing.
Then there is the giving in full confidence that He
will give, which is fully sanctioned by God. This is

recorded in II Cor. 9*.6-11 "But this I say, He that

soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly;

and

He

that soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

Let each man do according as he hath purposed in his
heart; not grudgingly, or of necessity; for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make
grace abound unto you: that ve. having always

suffj.ciency in everything, may abound unto every good

work;

as i t is written,

He hath scattered abroad,he

hath given to the poor; His righteousness abideth for

ever .
And he that suipplieth seed to the sower
and
bread for food shall supply and multiply your seed
for sowing and increase the fruits of your righteous

ness : ye being enriched in everything, unto all liber

ality, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God,"

The definite promise is here!

If we have faith

to

give He will supply so that we will have more to give.

What a wonderful adventure in faith-giving I The more
you give, the more you will have to give!
Have you

tried yo\ar faith in His promise?

The need for your help is evident right now. The p\irpose is the outreach of the gospel.
Givecheer
fully, liberally, bountifully
and let God give you
more to give. It is a circle in faith and giving

that we need to experience personally.

Missionar-y Conference

by Robert Tinsky, Hebron, Indiana

One of the most thrilling experiences of my ministry

was our recent "Faith-Promise" Missionary Conference,

We have seen the vision of ouir people grow over the

years and delighted to see them take this big step
forward in their effort to evangelize the world for
Christ.

The Goal for our campaign was

totaling over $6300 were received.

should come close to doubling

giving of $3300.

our

Faith-promises
This means we
1964 missionary

I believe this program has helped deepen the faith

of our people since the whole emphasis is upon the
importance of giving by faith,
We constantly
stressed the fact that we are not to give just what
we can afford to give but to committ ourselves and

then trust God to make it possible for us to be al le

to make our "faith - promise" a reality. We also
emphasized

the fact

that our

missionaries

should

not be the only Christians to live by faithevery

Christian should live by faith, trusting God to
supply his needs,

I recommend this program to every church.

It will
put new life into the people, it will give you a
sense of participation in a great way in the
tremendous task of winning three billion souls to
Christ, and it will cause the

to

"move"

Restoration

forward in a mighty way.

Movement

I believe this

program is a "must" for all our congregations if

we are to evangelize the world in our generation.

If I can be of assistance to any church in setting

up this type of program I will be glad to help in
any way.

Arise

To

The

Challenge

ty Vjcsn Crystal Nutt

A challenge had come, Dr, Pruett had heard
Of disease in a far away land.
Their bodies need care, their souls in despair,
A hospital, he knew, would be grand
The words of Jesus he plainly could see
Ye have done it to these, ye have done it to me.
XvJith a prayer in his heart he made the good start
To proclaim to the Christians the need.
Much prayer, much work, and much money
If this project was to succeed.
After three years, the day drew near
The hospital was completeI
The finest, the best within the land.
Surely God could be praised.
It was dedication day at Mashoko
And the African people gasped

As they viewed this great hospital

That had been built at last

Care for the body, hope for the soul

Amazing to say the least!

Ncow joy fills their souls as the story is told

Of Jesus the Saviour of men.

T.'he nurses in white are a beautiful sight

As they tenderly care for them.

IThe challenge was met, the challenge goes forth.

To another part of the land.

CDn the Urungwe Reserve God has opened the door

To another opportunity to serve.

Chidamoyo Hospital is planned, so come one and all

Let's arise to another groat need.

Let us all pray together and give what we can

In the name of Jesus our Master.

impact which will be

be seen in the opening of a medical clinic at
Chidamoyo.
This clinic was opened around the
first of March and is staffed by Betty Iddings,

a registered nurse.
Bruce Ammerman, mission
ary at Chidamoyo, has been helping when he can.
From 150 to 200 patients were being treated
every day.
In the first three weeks over

hew patients had come to the clinic for

treat-

- ment.

- This gives some idea of the impact

in reaching

the thousands in the Chidamoyo area who have

not been reached by the missionaries.
It
is
difficult to imagine what the impact will be
when a one hundred bed hospital is available
to these people for the.first time in history.

The cost of operating this clinic, which will

continue until the hospital is built, is about

$300 Pr month.

At the present time

no funds

are available to pay this.

The missionaries
have determined not to use any money for this
that^ has been given for the construction of the
hospital.
This means that unless somebody
begins giving for this clinic the cost for it
will come

out of

the

Chidamoyo missionaries'

living and service link funds.

to help with this now? If so write to Mary Lou

In this case we were able to help, but many

There was no question in our minds as to why

the
Rhodesian governraent had requested a major hospital
to be built in this isolated area.
Chief
Dandawa
had demanded that whoever came into the area

Both the government and

But much more was at stake than humanitarianism. To

have a hospital at Chidamoyo would be a tremendous

impact on the spreading of the Gospel, The natural

resentment toward the white man had produced suspi
cions already and only through first aid would this
suspicion be cast out and the claimed love be known

through deeds of kindness.

Dr. Pruett reports that

more converts are won through the hospital ministry

at Mashoko than any other aspect of the mission work.

The purpose of a medical work is primarily to prac

Dear Co-Laborers in Christ:

Leaving family and church representatives behind the door and windows at 0*Hare Field

in Chicago, we walked out with over 100 people Co board the Pan Am jet. The pilot announced
vre were number four in line for the runway. Looking out the window, we counted eleven oth
ers behind us, but soon we were airborne and once again on our way to AftTca^ It never did
get dark that night on the plane, for as the glow of the setting sun shone on the western
horizon, the glow of the rising sun was already appearing in Che east.
LONDON

We found London very cool - a pleasant change in weather. After locating a hotel about
mid-morning we all went to bed for a long nap. Because of the drastic time change - six
hours between Chicago and London - we found ourselves not ready to go to bed when night
came, nor were we ready to get up the following morning.
We went to see the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, which is the Queen's
home, and then walked through beautiful St. James Park where we stopped by a tea room for
sandwiches at lunch time. The children thought the greatest thing about London was to feed

the many, many pigeons. In fact, most of their sandwiches went to the pigeons. Traveling ;
aTl over London by underground train we and Donna" Kreeger, R.N., were fascinated by the
Westminster Abbey, Parliment House, Big Ben, the Tower of London, Madam Toussand's Wax Mu
seum, Piccadilly Circus, and the British and Victoria Museums.

On the way from and to the Airport, Karolyn observed all the chimneys and commented,

"It sure looks like Mary Poppin's town."

Our plane was one and one-half hours late leaving

London, but we still made connections in Rome, where we otherwise would have had a two-hour

layover.

We landed then at Athens, Greece; and Nairobi, Kenya before reaching Salisbury.
SALISBURY

The plane was an hour late arriving at Salisbury but before it came to a halt we had
spotted the Ammermans, Betty Iddings, and Madonna Burget. Madonna had come to meet Donna
who had been a real blessing to us on the trip. Also awaiting us was. 45 minutes of waiting
and going through immigration and customs before joining our friends with whom we visited
the rest of the day and attended church with them that evening.
HOME AT CHIDAMOYO

The Ammermans had written telling us someone had broken a window while we were in the
U.S. and had entered our home before Betty Iddings, R.N., had moved in. Upon investigation.

we found our bedspreads and all our blankets had been taken with the exception of two
quilts. We have no idea who may have done it, but our hearts are saddened to think someone
would. Many of the people in this area are not Christians and need Christ as their Saviour
so much.

One of the ladies brought us a "welcome back" gift of a lovely hen, and it is now in
Bruce's chicken pen awaiting the pot. Bruce is able to supply all of jia .with pLice^ -fresh
eggs now, for which we are grateful.

Once again we have moved our belongings into our small four room house. Betty had
moved into the 16 foot house trailer nearby. Included this time in our little temporary
home is Ziden's desk and filing cabinets in Karolyn's room. Tommy is too big for the crib,
so he sleeps in the living-dining room on a sofa. We will appreciate having a home with
adequate space.

When Bruce came in yesterday to help move some things, he said, "It looks

like the Nutt's house - it even smells like the Nutt's house," for the aroma of baking bread
was drifting across the partial wall dividing the tiny kitchen from the living-dining room.
It is good to be home. Much needs to be done and we begin with new zeal and determina
tion to see the Lord's Church grow in Rhodesia. It was a wonderful year in the U.S.A. and
how thankful we are for your much help and encouragement in prayers and support. God has
set before us a tremendous challenge and responsibility, but we are convinced that victory
will come through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Yours in His Service,

Dear Christian Friends:

Greetings in the name of Christ.

Time is rapidly moving along and things look

very encouraging. Many exciting days have come and gone. The first Sunday in Rhodesia 3
adults and a young person stepped forward^to accept Christ. One p_f them, Afesi, had been
considering his decision for about one and one half years.
sion for over 3 years doing general work.

He has worked here at the mis

WELCOMED GUESTS

We have been privileged to have several visitors this past month from the United

States.

Brother

Bob Reeves and John Miller from Fairfield, Illinois, and Brother Lowell

Lusby, president of Kentucky Christian College, were here for the groundbreaking of the hospi-bal on August 3rd. The Pruetts had been here for several days and we had worked :together
selecting the exact location of the hospital, taking the levels of the site, and Lucy doing.
the drawing of the plans. Sara Stere, R.N.,' was here relieving Betty Xddings,' R.N,., for. a:
few days. Ten days later Mr. and Mrs. Georgd Graves arrived in Salisbury where-we met them,
and then we all "journeyed to Chidamoyo. Brother Graves is an elder in one of the churches ;
at South Bend, Ind. and was here to-visit the missions and take care of some business with

one of the food-companies in Salisbury.

I took them to see the Kariba Dam which backs up

the largest man-made lake in the world'^Add they found the many elephants and sable antelope,
along with the normal baboons and monkeys, quite exciting. So did 1,' especially when our
little car stalled for ^bOut one hour only about 250 feet from the elephants,!
SPIRITUAL GROWTH EVIDENT

It is good to'be here again and see the growth of many church leaders. The task
is still unfinished in training them, bUt with men of God like Mufana, head teacher and.
preacher, and Michael who is preaching each week, we are encouraged. Bruce Ammermanworks

with Evangelists Miga Chikanda and Simplisio Machingura and new churches are being opened,
especially in the Sinoia area. Many new areas still await oUt ^coming-with the Gospel, and. .

we anxiously await the arrival of the Charles Kelley and Dale Marshall families to join :us,
that many doors now opened can be entered.

We covet your prayers thait-God can use us in all.

things to glorify Him among the nations and tribes.

EXCERPTS FROM PERSONAL LETTER FROM HELEN DATED JULY 26, 1965.

On Monday, last week, Ziden worked on the lorry. That night he let it go about ten
miles to pick up some bales of cotton for one of the agriculture demonstrators. The lorry died
and he worked on it until a quarter to one the following morning and couldn't get it started.
He went back the next morning and by taking our car battery out and using jumpers to the lorry
battery, he got it going. Anyway, after it was all over, the demonstrator sent Ziden the nicest
letter thanking him for his trouble and saying he understood now what thd Bible means when it

says, "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your
Father in Heaven."

Also^ "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

He said,

'through it all you did not lose your head (get angry) and even when we parted it was cheerful."
This makes one realize how important our witness is in deed as Well as word.
BULLDOZER WORKS ON AIRSTRIP

Friday, a bulldozer came by, so Ziden stopped him to see if he could work for us a
few days to level some ant heaps and work on the airstrip for a while. He said he was on the
way to the Evangelical Alliance Mission about twenty miles away, but he would wait here while
we went to call his boss in Salisbury. We went to the nearest telephone, forty miles away, a

government phone, and he said if we could make an agreement with the other mission it would be
fine. They said we could have it for three days. It has really been fascinating to watch the
bulldozer work. While it was cutting down one big ant heap this morning, he cut a big cobra in

two, but his head was still going so Ziden took a Mg ^lub and killed it.
WORKERS TOGETHER FOR GOD

Our thanks go to the fine Christians at Eagle Lake, Minnesota who launched out in de
termination to raise $3,000.00 with which to purchase a Ford Truck No. 250 to be used in the
Lord's work at Chidamoyo Mission. Others joined hands with them in meeting this goal and below

is listed the churches, groups, and individuals that were challenged to assist in this project.

Dear Friends

in Christ:

Greetings in the name of our Lord. So many things to say make it

difficult to know where to start and where to stop. Reminds me of the
ten foot python we saw the other day. , We were watching it come out of
a hole and while I stood ready to shoot if it attacked, Helen ran the
movie camera.
Later we-viewed the film and first the head appears and
on and on i t comes. Every foot more we -wouldgasp a little louder.
We
are anxious to show it to you some day.
RESERVOIR FINISHED

Water is about here. For four years we have hauled water by truck,
car, and foot.
Now our 12,000 gallon reservoir is finished and will
soon supply all needs.
I laid some of the main line yesterday and shall
continue on Monday, the Lord'willing.
AND,THEN COMETH THE HARVEST

Souls are being added to the Church daily and how thrilling it is

to see the growth of the..new Christians.

Just the other d^^3(it^, stOod

on the banks -of the-Kenyohgo

persons
were burled with their Lord. God is certainly blessing ow^-la^rs and
how happy we are that you are working with us and taking part that the
harvest might be gathered.

The medical work is playing a tremendous

part in this and we are working hard on-the hospital.

The foundations

are now comp.iei-e.--for the main Medical Building.

HEARING COMPLETION

Finally it looks like a home for us. In about three weeks we will
move in and what an exciting day it will be when we move from our
cramped little house. The ceiling and plumbing are'left-to do yet, but
all is moving v/ell.

I have a lot of help with Tommy.

God is good and vie praise Him for His loving care
prayers and support. May God richly bless you all.

Dear Christian Friends:

Greetings in the name of Christ. ; Excitement seems to fill the news as Knowledge
of Independence in Rhodesia spreads around; the world. Many quest:ions mount up in almost

every aspect of Rhodesian life, and one is leftL,wi.th^^the-conclusion that only "time will

tell."

That which is certain in life, though, is enough to giva;- faith, fpr everyday; for "we

know whom we have believed," and of a certainty,is our eternal hope in. Jesus Christ as we
live and labor for-iRim. This news is moab::iimportan.t and because of it wp press on with you
to spread the gospel among the African people.
What should I write about? Political, spiritual, or economical news could fill

many pages, but let me start with ^at we might call.......

.Daily Bread

stacked

Our home is n,e^^J.9&,-fi.Q)!Ppletion and in a few days we'll move in. Odds and ends are
one room and as Helen was looking for some paint, she stepped down on a piece of

glass and made a rather large cut on-her foot. That evening I decided I'd better fix sup
per, and the extent of my cooking Ifed'to sandwiches. To the bread box I went to find a few
slices which were a bit stale, and was then informed that there were only enough for some
planned dressing and that this bread had been carefully saved for that purpose.

. ... .^o^n.. th|^, whirl of, the past 16 months of activity, Helen's next statement to run

to the sto.re and'huy' soAe'bread'left us all amused, and made us realize that wd.really are-,
back in.Africa. How common it had been a few months ago to run and get the bread or milk,
but now it is'62 imiles away".

Progress and Politics

When we listen to the Voice of America and other foreign programs as they broad

cast about Rhodesia,we.almost get e^raid,to continue living here, for it sounds pretty bad.
Inside the borders though
. Little understanding of the real, sit
uation is represented abroad, and there is not much reason for fear unless the U. M. would
Interfere.

In. .spite of all that is going on, twq Christian

area and ,the upper'.grades;, were approved for the^djtistihg^^

Fuieche'^and

Sdshung^ are the new ones, and since these two places are where the strongest Christians
live, it was a real source of joy to all. The people will be able to help a lot. on the
cost, but still we must help some with the initial building. Four hours a week of Biblical
studies will now be given, to the maiiy chil'-dreh in these areas arid this makes it all worth- ..
while.,,.,..One thing that we have laid before God in prayer is that, with these opportunities,

i^ell as the hospital'being "under construction, the politicai. news._wiU,.nQt cause a lack
of support.

We covet your prayers in.Jihisbehalfaswell.
