Tasks
Week 2

Mechanical CAD/CAM
Creo: further features
Creo is a suite of programs which have many different methods of interacting with the
model. In addition to straight extrusions and revolves there are abilities to produce
complex solids using blends and sweeps. This week the motor-blower unit includes
the use of these features and the development of a facia allows their use together
with more complex CAD features. (You may also like to experiment with the use of
surface and free modeling together with the use of Creo Direct to interact with you
final model)
Tasks for week 2:
1. Go through the assisted exercises (individually) #2.
2. Using the overall envelope of the car design in week one, jointly specify and
sketch a common facia design and functionality. Split into two teams and collaborate on the detailed specification and design of
A demountable instrument panel centre stack HMI (Human Machine Interface) unit to include audio, navigation and other infotainment controls,
as well as climate control functions
See specification/dimensions of a choice of main circuit board board Balloon 3 or Raspberry Pi) and display screen attached. (Pre constructed
models are available, see the website) [Creativity re changes to connections etc. is allowed if justified]
Facia sub-unit unit to accept the demountable unit complete with trim and
control switches for unit and other functionality. (NB Maximum extent of
unit 200mmx200mmx25mm)
3. Continue building the model of the motor-blower assembly. This will consist
of finishing constructing individual parts, creating sub-assemblies, include the
given parts and then building the final assembly. It is expected that individual
parts will be constructed by the team but the final construction and assembly
drawing will be completed by individuals. You will also need to verify if all your
parts fit together and make appropriate changes if needed.
Second Reports ( Individual + Group )
In your second individual report, should be split into two separatable sections
1. Exercises/Drawings
(a) You should discuss briefly (1-2 pages) the role of software packages in the
conceptual and embodiment design processes.

(b) Include all the drawings for the motor-blower assembly, (i.e. the subassemblies and the final assembly) together with a brief discussion on the
general steps that you have used to build it.
(c) Drawings of the models generated for the assisted exercises
(d) A list of the drawings/models completed wholly or in part by yourself (NB
Also included in the team document)
2. HMI Design
(a) Discussion on how your team approached the task of designing the dashboard HMI unit, including critical aspects of its functionality and design
for inclusiveness. Details should also be included on the effect of any design changes that have had to be made, to ensure that the two components
fit and function.
The second group report must include
1. A table(s) identifying the team members responsible for the individual models
and drawings included in the team document.
2. Drawings of the week 2 parts for the motor-blower.
3. Details of the design of the HMI unit including:
A copy of the specification (mechanical, electrical and system)
Copies of sketches, dimensional details and drawings of the overall design.
Including redesigns of the of any items modelled in week 1.
Detailed drawings of the sub-components designed (i.e. facia sub-unit or
demountable unit).
N.B. A pdf or ps copy of all the drawings/model images + list of responsibilities
included in the 2nd week report should be deposited in a directory week1 pdfs, in the
teams common area, by the submission deadline.
Please email pjgl2@eng.cam.ac.uk with the location of a shared directory with the
final design for the units + any additional components, e.g. connectors, switches,
that may be required. NB Please include a STL version of all items in the directory.
The report will count for 20 marks (out of 80) and should be handed in by 5pm on
Thursday 22nd May.
