Students like Sylar, who come to SCEIC

with special needs such as visual and/or
speech impairments receive early
intervention and targeted teaching methods
that ensure they reach their full potential.
I cant express how remarkable the change
has been in Sylar since attending SCEIC.
Hes speech is taking off, and he is also
becoming more social and confident. His
teachers are remarkable and find unique
ways to teach Sylar. -Sylars Grandmother

Letter from the Executive Director and

Board Chair
As Space Coast Early Intervention Center continued its 25 th Anniversary celebration, we experienced a very
exciting, eventful and successful year. Last year our letter spoke about keeping SCEIC on the cutting edge of early
childhood education. There have been such advances in the use of hand held devices and apps for children with and
without disabilities and now we are learning how we can make learning not only easier but more fun.
This year we broke the technology barrier; that humming you hear are our new ipads and computers working hard
as our children use them in their classrooms to help them to learn and grow. Thanks to a grant from PNC
Foundation we created a new literacy and technology center. Each classroom now has ipads and our teachers can
take advantage of the thousand s of apps for children with and without disabilities.
And while we know how important it is to integrate technology into our classrooms, we also know, as Bill Gates
said, that Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher
is most important. Our teachers are our best resource and we continue to offer a low student to teacher ratio which
helps insure that we can meet the individual needs of each child.
Another goal for this year was to develop new programs that would serve the families with young children, that
didnt want a full day program. Our new enrichment programs include Creativity from Head to Toe and World
Explorers. Taekwondo classes are available for SCEIC students on site. Parents can sit in on these classes; we help
address separation anxiety for both the kids and the parents. And as always, all of SCEICs programs and classes are
inclusive for children with and without disabilities.
We had another year of successful community events and fundraisers: the 21 st Tim Wakefield Golf Tournament
became a smaller and more intimate event, but we increased the funds raised over the previous year. The dedication
and passion Tim and Stacy Wakefield bring to the community and the school are deeply appreciated. The 4 th annual
Cycle Jam brought out over 300 riders and a great ride was had by all. All Kids Can, our family and community
event, expanded our Autism Awareness Festival as we focused on services, products and providers for all children.
This is the end of Keiths term as Chair of the Board of Directors. We extend our thanks for steering the
organization in the development of its three year strategic plan and for the time and energy he devoted to his
leadership role. Volunteers are the foundation and force behind SCEIC and we thank each one for the contribution
of time and talent. And thank you to our donors, individuals, corporations, foundations and United Way, many of
whom have supported the school since its doors opened, and the new contributors who have chosen to give to
SCEIC. We would love to have you visit our school for a tour or to find out ways you can get involved as a donor,
volunteer or community partner.
The students of SCEIC, our teachers, administration, and Board of Directors thank you and the Brevard community
for your continued support.

SCEIC is Preparing Children for the future...

A er only the rst week on VPK, my son James could spell his name! He
recognizes le ers everywhere and tells us what word begins with it.

It's amazing! He comes home every day and tells us a new thing he learned, like how
to carry scissors and to raise your hand to ask a ques on. I am 100% condent he will
be ready for kindergarten. - James Mom

Did You Know?

The Centers for Disease Control estimates
1 in 700 babies are born with Down
syndrome each year. It occurs when an
individual has a full or partial extra copy
of chromosome 21.
Early intervention services, like those
provided at Space Coast Early Intervention
Center, will often help children with Down
syndrome to improve their physical and
intellectual abilities.

Thanks to a generous grants from PNC Grow Up Great and the
Innovative Worthy Projects Foundation, SCEIC was able to introduce
state-of-the-art technology into the classrooms. We purchased iPads for
the classrooms to be used as augmentative communication deices for
nonverbal students and to enhance learning experiences for all of our
students.

iPad applications can be customized to target specific skill sets for each
individual student and are used in conjunction with traditional learning
materials. We are able to work with students on fine motor skills, lan-
guage development, counting, math and pre-reading skills and so much
more. We have introduced a model technology classroom into one of VPK classes and hope to expand this to
all VPK rooms in the near future!

What makes SCEIC dierent

As Brevards premiere nonprofit preschool for
children with and without special needs, we offer
a unique inclusive program that ensures equal
learning opportunities for all children, regardless
of ability. At SCEIC, each child receives the
academic and social skills they need to succeed in
life. Working with therapists, behaviorists, and
early interventionists, our highly qualified
preschool teachers use a variety of techniques to meet the needs of each
student.
Our program is designed so children with and without developmental delays
can learn side-by-side and develop friendships, become leaders and role
models, and learn acceptance and diversity. SCEIC combines the benefits of
large classrooms, low student to teacher ratios, adaptive equipment, state-ofthe-art technology, and innovative teaching methods to provide quality
educational experiences every student can take part in.

We couldn't be happier
with the progress our
daughter, Zoey, has
made at SCEIC.
She started attending at
22 months old, speaking
a few phrases as most
children her age
do. Within weeks, her
vocabulary and social
skills skyrocketed!
We are very impressed
with the level of
guidance and care
given, and would
recommend SCEIC to
any parent of young
children!
